Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh and BigChoc cows eat grass innit so I'm not counting. Basically just salad.

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 17:32

Really Betsy??? Shock You don't just think I'm a bit ... 'slack' and need to get squeezing?????

Please tell me I don't have to get my nethers out in front of Doc. Only managed it when pg because every man and his dog wants a good rummage then don't they!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/10/2013 17:42

Oh cuckoo I would go to the GP. Sounds like you've strained a muscle down there or something.

If you put in finger inside and squeeze, what does it feel like? Normal?

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 18:13

Not sure I know what 'normal' should feel like. As we're sharing Wink I don't think I ever fully recovered from birth of dd and her bowling ball head!

I am a bit of a head down and get on with it type, and haven't ever really spoken to anyone about it, so I just presumed it was same for every woman post birth??

I had got better over years though and it would've taken a seriously full bladder/funny situ/trampoline to catch me out. But things took a definite down hill turn after Jillian and her sadistic ways!

Am off to have a root around. Will report back shortly.

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 18:13

betsy Thanks for that - glad to know its not me. I shouldn't be moaning really as it is improving with every toning stage so I assume its not really toning but my skin shrinking then being met with more loss again. At least that's my theory. I'd rather not eat that late either, but have gotten used to it after years of commuting and now I wouldn't be able to eat a decent meal if I didn't. I'm longing for the day when I can trust my kids in the kitchen and I can make a family meal with some left over for DH to heat up when he gets home.

cuckoo I agree with the GP thing, especially if you had no issues before.

southeastdweller · 21/10/2013 18:23

Seems like all the fasters are on the right track today. Any news from dotty, Bssh and lucy?

I've just done this months online food order (I'm not fasting today Grin) and saw that Eat Water Slim rice, noodles and pasta are half price (Ocado) so I bought their noodles and rice. Has anyone tried them?

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 18:32

Right then, I can report that there may have been less of a errrm grip when I squeezed. However, I can't really remember last time I would have carried out this..er...procedure, so I don't know how different it feels internally. Just what's happening on the outside! Also, different times of month change the um layout a bit don't they?? so would I feel slightly different depending on that?

If I go to GP, what could they actually do for it anyway?? It's not as if it happens just because I stand up (like did just after dd born), but with other forces at work - too much coffee on a fd full bladder, laughing, sneezing etc. So won't they just say do loads of pelvic floors?

Thanks btw! Thanks

Talkinpeace · 21/10/2013 18:39

cuckoo
if you sit on the toilet having a wee, can you clamp all your muscles and stop the flow, or at least slow it a lot?
that is the best pelvic floor exercise bar none and really easy to tell if you are doing it right ....
if you are getting pain, go see the GP - and they regard pudenda as generally nicer to look at than pensioner feet - but otherwise
yes, its probably just a strain.

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 19:02

Thanks Tip. Have just emptied bladder so can't try that yet. No pain, so if we are talking strain will that just be a diy repair? Hot and cold ice packs, keep elevated etc? Lol! But seriously is just self repair?

lucyintheskywithdinos · 21/10/2013 19:02

for cuckoo

Successful FD here, had chickpea curry for dinner which was delicious. Must get lots of work done this evening, I'm starting up my own business atm.

BsshBossh · 21/10/2013 19:48

TiP I'm beginning to get a little weaker down there. I like the idea of strengthening the pelvic floor muscles whilst weeing. How many times should I squeeze on the loo? Grin

Well done lucy and congrats on setting up on your own!

FD nearly over (just an hour to go to make it 24 hours). No food all day despite being on the verge of a cold and dreaming of comfort food but then at the same time no real appetite so it made for a bizarrely easy FD today (helped along no doubt by the indulgent weekend eating). Will break fast with apple, cup a soup and 10 cal jelly.

Not2bObvious · 21/10/2013 19:52

Oh Cuckoo terribly sorry for your trouble but reading about it sent me off into a pelvic floor exercise session. Would that count as actual exercise s

MissStrawberry · 21/10/2013 19:53

My food for today so you can laugh at me

Gouda cheese (like a baby bel)
basmati with mushroom cheese
1 farleys rusk Hmm.

MissStrawberry · 21/10/2013 19:55

Also 2 black olives and a tablespoon of cold cooked pasta. Really annoyed about that.

Not2bObvious · 21/10/2013 19:55

As I was saying! As I didn't get my run today. Sincerely hope it straightens/tightens itself upConfused
FD coming to a close, 530 and done! Cup of tea, that's all that's left to have. Eggs for brekkie before my trip away, should keep me going til lunch. Blooming hungry now though

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 19:58

Happy lady full of stew and pudding. I would declare the kitchen closed but I did that last night and DH was mightily upset as he hadn't had his dinner by then Blush. Anyway, its closed to me.

wrigglebum · 21/10/2013 20:07

Going back to talk about diet drinks- this is quite interesting.

Jumping jacks can be hard on the pelvic floor- no wee leakage here but I can't seem to do a full set without farting Blush. Agree with going to doctor- no one should have to put up with leaking.

Nfd but just had to clean up a tsunami of puke so not really feeling like much dinner now!

Southeast- I have slim noodles in the cupboard but not tried the yet. For a rice substitute I highly recommend cauliflower rice- delicious. I like it so much I made myself some to go with my takeaway curry on Friday- just meant I could scoff more naan without being too bloated.

Talkinpeace · 21/10/2013 20:09

Re : Pelvic floor I try to do a couple of 'stops' every couple of days. I do not jump so cannot comment on the effect of jumping jacks :-)

WilsonFrickett · 21/10/2013 20:16

Hi everyone

Itsaboatjack · 21/10/2013 20:17

(sitting here doing pelvic floor exercises)

Successful first FD for a while. I've had about 100 cals of milk in coffee and one boullion drink. There's nothing I really fancy for dinner so I'm leaving it at that.

Good job it's an NFD tomorrow as we are doing a cook off of our new menu items Grin

BsshBossh · 21/10/2013 20:24

Well done today's fasters. Two NFDs for me now. Woohoo!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 21/10/2013 20:50

Self-indulgent whinge alert:

Completely sick of tiredness/low energy sabotaging fd's. Had a toffee crisp and a twix to keep myself going because I was so tired after a hectic weekend and a couple of poor nights of sleep (totm approaching so quite run down). The thing is, I wasn't even hungry I was just incredibly weary.

Not2bObvious · 21/10/2013 20:57

Ahh Helles you sound very low Sad The feeling of weariness is hard to get rid of. Wish I had something to say that would help, all I can think of is stuff like comfy pj's, hot water bottle, cuppa, snuggle up in bed with a book (if you can of course!) Actually I think I'm going to do that myself! Sold to the woman in the fluffy dressing gown! Take care and feel better

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 21/10/2013 20:59

Oh Cuckoo loads of sympathy for you after a couple of years of stress incontinence after having my son. One tip that seems to have worked for me (other than TIP's excellent suggestion which also works) is to concentrate on pulling your lady parts up into yourself. Easier to do than explain!!

Well done monday fasters. I've already posted about my poor showing but I still ended up under 1000 so it'll do.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 21/10/2013 21:04

Thanks N2BO I do not cope well with tiredness and it has been a long half term. I seem to need a lot of sleep - about 9 hours and that doesn't happen during the week before totm. So immune system is shot and I have cold sores and ulcers and spots and snots and then i wonder why i am single!!

My sunlight lamp needs new bulbs so I am waking up in the dark Sad.

Basically there are lots of reasons I'm tired.

However

I will not be able to go through life without ever being tired so I need to find some way to cope without counterproductively using sugar to keep going.
