Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

BetsyBell · 10/10/2013 10:49

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Have been out since 10am until now so easy to go without. Having cold water now. Found some rice in the cupboard that no one likes so I am having it for tea as it is under 400 calories and looks delicious. Feel more confident I can fast today and reminded myself I am not a bin so don't need to eat the left overs I just saw in the fridge when I got my water.

guinea pig is called Toffee

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 13:36

Well! That was umm... invigorating?? pulls hedge and cowpat from hair

I may well now have pneumonia, but on upside, mood has definitely improved. Found it quite cathartic actually. Just me against the elements... blah blah..

So to start again.. HAPPY MONDAY FAST DAY EVERBODY!!

Weekend was bit of anti-climax. Hate when that happens. Am soooo relieved to be at start of new week and on a fast day. It definitely seems to righten (?) me. Coffee and bouillion, gallons of water, then meal tonight.

Hello Alfiemama, KickAss, GreenKit, Crystal, Serendipity and AnnieL and anyone else forgot! Hi BigChoc and thanks!

Made some discoveries over weekend thought I'd share..

Bread - think was Eatriskier(apologies if not) mentioned Danish bread few times further back in threads so thought I'd have a look. Found them plus more in same section. Not fan of white but found a Warburtons wholemeal - 58 cals slice. I love tin toms (92cal whole tin) on tst with loads of hp/blk pepper so pleased with that!

Mini choc treat - Funsize twix 99 cals, mars 80 cals. Packs 16 for £1 in Asda at mo. Thankyou Halloween!

Udon noodles - not tried yet but seems tgtbt, 138 cals for 125g uncooked (according to pack this is one serving). Due to size these always seem quite meaty and satisfying.

Found a yum recipe for black pudding stuffed mushrooms will post later. Allegedly 279 cals a pop and looks very tasty.

Also if you are going to go to Lidl to raid them for packs of mini marzipan butter stollen, then proceed to eat half a pack (11) without batting an eyelid, don't look at the back. Discovering they are 80 odd cals each spoils the enjoyment somewhat until the next time.

...and breathe (rest crampy fingers)

Chocupid · 21/10/2013 13:50

Thanks its a boat JB and Mummy for the comments and support.
I do the gym just need to get back on track with the FD's as weight loss is 80% nutrition.

So my first fast day in 6 wks today (to lose the reappearing 8lb before it becomes a stone) is going well just had a nibble of a protein bar to keep me going (felt all day without food may be to hard for first FD back after 6wks).. And I'm not planning on eating dinner till around 6/7pm.
I too forgot how cold you feel on fast days... Feel Monday is a good day to fast as you have one in the bank for the rest of the week... Good luck Monday fasters hope all is going well for you all.

PoshPaula · 21/10/2013 13:53

I really like the concept of having one in the bank chocupid that will help me get through today. So far - one tea, one coffee, two cuppa-soups.

Yorkshire Provender soup tonight. I can do this!!

Chocupid · 21/10/2013 14:14

Yes you can Posh stick with it and tomorrow you can relax a little.

I'm always more angry with myself if I have a FD failure on a Monday rather than any other day, silly I know but whatever gets you thru eh!

Been reading how lots of us work out on an empty tummy, me too can't possibly do it after food and evening is a definite no no for me, I'm in awe of you who do.

Am dreaming of what to eat for dinner tonight aiming for 400cals will look on the recipe thread for inspiration.

Itsaboatjack · 21/10/2013 15:08

Blimey where has the day gone!! I've been stocktaking then catching up on e-mails and next thing I know it's time to get the dc from school. Managed to squeeze in 10 mins of hula hoop and 5 mins of kettle bell. Still at least I've not had time to get hungry.

I'm also a morning exerciser, there's no way I would be able to find the motivation in the evenings, usually by the time I have a chance to stop a d sit down there's not much getting me up again.

Greenkit · 21/10/2013 15:09

So far I have had 2 weetabix, with SSmilk at 9.30am and lots of water

I wont be eating till midnight

MissStrawberry · 21/10/2013 15:13

Everyone is doing really well! I haven't done any proper exercise for ages.

Loving the mini mars, etc from Asda. Hope there will be some left next week! Also interested in the black pudding stuffed mushrooms if you are able to post the recipe please.

Feeling really proud to have fasted all day. Only thing I have had is water all day.

Hoping for 11 stone 4 this weekend.

thinkcan · 21/10/2013 15:21

Successful first one meal FD today. Broke my 23 hour fast with 2 hard boiled eggs and a huge salad. It was not as difficult as I had imagined it to be. Goes to show hunger is often more psychological than physical.

I usually exercise in a fasted state for my weights sessions at the gym and my 7 km uphill bike rides without any problems in the morning. It is my evening hikes I have problems with. As the hikes are usually almost two hours long and involve lots of hill work, I always try to have a good lunch two hours before the climbs. Even so, I often feel weak during the hikes. A few times, I have had to ask for lollies or anything sugary to get rid of the low sugar level feeling. Any one has any suggestions why this is so?

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 15:57

Well done everyone on a fast day today, especially those just starting.

Mondays can be hard sometimes, just because they're Mondays, but it is the absolute best way to get you on the right track for rest of week. And as mentioned by others, it does give you most flexibility for rest of week. With even the option to do a 4:3 without it interfering with gorging at weekend; Just as I managed to pull off surprisingly easily last week (pats self on back whilst looking around smugly).

GreenKit - Hats off to you, not sure I could cope with fasting on shifts without lots sugar as a major crutch!

MissStrawb Well done and keep going! You are where I want to be in weight as that is lowest I've ever got down to since inflating; Until I get past that I won't feel like I've started properly yet.
I haven't succumbed to any of funsizes. Yet. However, they are definitely NOT for trick or treaters and will be savoured very mindfully by myself unlike the mini stollen were

One recipe coming up.....

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 16:05

Hi cuckoo. Hope you didn't swallow any of that cowpat. If you did, log it in MFP immediately for calorie count.

Exercise: The divide is between those with sufficient self-discipline to exercise on their own (cuckoo, Bssh & co) and those who need the gym for mutual support & much more equipment (me, any others ?). I work full-time, so train evenings. No, 6am is NOT a waking hour in my universe.

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 16:09

Does anyone else find they go through phases where they're flabby then tone up then go flabby again etc. etc through the weight loss? I'm thinking of the c-sec apron area here. As I lose weight it goes horrible, then improves and I think yay - toning all the way, then seems to collapse in on itself again. Maybe I'm just weird...

Hope fasting is going well for everyone. Nearly wobbled at lunchtime when I fed DS as I'd managed to pull out an Irish stew for him - the meal I'm looking forward to tonight. Got through it and have hit another hungry phase now. It'll pass and I don't really fancy DS's dinner at least. Only 4 hrs to go. May treat myself to a pepsi max if it all gets a bit too much. Rock and Roll here.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 16:17

bigchoc I used to snack in the evenings but trained myself out of it. I eat early as I prefer to have a non-full stomach when I go to bed eatsriskier - I just find late eating makes me feel lucky in the morning and I don't sleep as well. Because I am a delicate flower Grin Wink

I'm not very self disciplined exercise-wise sadly but like Itsa once I've sat down after a day of full-on-ness there's no getting me up again. So, that only leaves me a very short time in the morning and therefore it needs to be close to home (a run), at home (dvd) or part of what I need to do (cycling errand).

I'd love to want to go to the gym and exercise classes, but mostly I really don't. Pre-kids I used to gym at lunchtimes a couple of times a week but not taken it back up again and have far less disposable income!

PoshPaula · 21/10/2013 16:18

Have just hit a hungry phase eatriskier and got through it with a banana. My first 'solids' today. It will pass now. Leaving work soon and will go home to drink masses of water which should see me through until supper tonight.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 16:21

eatsriskier That's exactly how it is for me too. The toned-upness doesn't stick at all unless I keep up and increase my exercise levels. Not just tummy but thighs, arse and upper arms too. So instead of increasing the exercise I tend to stop for a bit, for one reason or another, then start again.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 16:32

thinkcan I think cardio and lifting predominantly use different kinds of fuel:
Lifting uses glycogen - glucose stored in muscles - and generally uses up fewer calories at the time than cardio (but lifting burns calories over a longer time and builds muscle for higher RMR).
Cardio - including hiking - takes more fuel from body fat stores, which can run low, especially towards end of an FD.
I find I can do fasted weights any time of day, whereas I limit fasted HIIT to about 1 hr mornings and I don't exceed 1 hr medium intensity spin on FD evenings. I once tried fasted boxing / Tabata (HIIT cardio and strength ) late evening, but had to keep resting and nearly barfed.

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 16:38

Black Pudding stuffed Mushrooms
serves 4 (or 1 Grin )

4 Portobello (large) mushrooms
25g butter
1 small red onion
1 clove garlic
250g black pudding sliced
6 cherry tomatoes, deseeded & chopped
2tsp dried chilli flakes
40g fresh breadcrumbs
Fried eggs and salad to serve.

Pre heat oven to 200c/180c Fan.

-Line baking tray with greaseproof paper. Remove mushroom stalks and finely chop them.

-Melt butter in frying pan. Add onion, garlic, chopped stalks and cook slowly for 5 mins. Crumble in black pudd and cook 3-4 mins breaking up as go. Stir in toms and chilli flakes.

-Put mush upside down on baking sheet. Spoon filling onto each one then top with breadcrumbs.

-Bake for 15 mins until mush cooked and brdcrumbs golden. Top each one with a fried egg, season with blk pepper and serve with salad.

Recipe states 279 cals. Am presuming that is without the egg.
First thoughts are substitute butter for something lower in cals, do without brdcrumbs (or use cheese instead for variety). Lose the egg or use healthier cooking method.

Not tried yet so can't vouch for it, but looks yum. Could be served with all sorts of low cal options for fd and looks as though would be quite filling.

Will post on recipe thread later.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 16:39

Betsy I'm just a gym bunny and I love exercise - typical mesomorph !
However, I really envy your eating discipline - I'm a greedy pig Blush.
For years all trainers told us to eat 6 x daily and intellectually I know better now, but I think my bod still panics that it will lose muscle at the first hunger pang.
All at the gym still think fasting "bad" so I just don't discuss it any more. My performance definitely hasn't suffered with 52.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 16:41

Cuckoo Don't make me hungry on FD ! Grin

MissStrawberry · 21/10/2013 16:45

Thank you for the recipe! I will let you know how it goes. I was up north a few weeks ago and had the most amazing black pudding, much better than M&S's.

I had a gouda baby bel a few minutes ago but I am still coming in under 500 cals so no beating myself up. DS1 doesn't want any tea so no temptation there though worried why he doesn't want to eat.

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 16:47

2 additional thoughts..

The onion and garlic was meant to be finely chopped! duh!

Overcooked black pudd is yuck - so not sure it needs 3-4 mins cooked prior to 15 in oven?? Unless this is to counteract any extra moisture from the mush when cooking?? Am testing this week so will do with and without to experiment.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 16:49

If you saw my eating between the hours of 4 and 6 you wouldn't envy me bigchoc! I have my snack danger zones I have to fight against, just at a different time to yours... It's fine on FDs but NFDs are often very tough at that time. Still, I console myself that at least I can adjust my evening meal accordingly :)

Talking of which, I'm hoping that the soup I made on Saturday and failed to eat (due to snacking) isn't completely disgusting. Mind you, things do tend to taste so much better on a fast day!

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 17:12

Ref all the exercise chat. I am definitely better if I get straight to it in the morning. But that is with me being limited to at home exercise at mo. Running (stumbling) and exercise dvds.

I have a dodgy back so I desperately need to get back into Pilates (and eventually Yoga), to improve my core, create leaner longer limbs and flexibility etc. Not to mention mental benefits.

The prob I have is that other than the physio led Pilates sessions I had through NHS at hospital, classes seem really hard to come by here. Have a good Lynne Robinson dvd, but have got really laaazzzzzy with exercise and am yet to get started this year! lol!

The best I manage is the occasional run which seems easier to start for some reason. If I could get out to classes (any kind) that would be only way I could manage any later in the day activity.

Now what I would really love to do is to find some Latin/Ballroom classes to get me one of those there dancer's bodies and live out Dirty Dancing fantasies with some Patrick Swayze type instructor

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 17:24

Errrrmm..... slightly delicate matter to ask about. Ever since my failed attempt at JM 30 day shred last Fri, I seem to have developed a bit of a TLS (tena lady situation) [embarrassed].

I only made it to the press ups but am starting to think that the jumping jacks might've ruptured my pelvic floor Shock Shock Shock

Ever since then I have had lots of incidences and am now scared to sneeze, cough, laugh, breathe.

Anyone else noticed anything or can offer up some kind of explanation?

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 17:26

Blimey cuckoo I think you should get yourself to the GP - don't wait, go tomorrow!
