Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Awwww mummy, here's to a better mood for tomorrow

Wow bsssh 48lbs! When you were calorie counting did you do 1200?

BsshBossh · 19/10/2013 21:42

alfiemama total of 76 lbs actually. 1200 cals? Hell no! I worked out my TDEE and ate at around a 15% cut of that which averaged out at 1800 cals a day. I love food too much to have only allowed myself 1200 cals daily and would definitely have fallen off the wagon early. I'm a big believer in eating enough calories so as not to get your body used to too little (and wrecking metabolism).

alfiemama · 19/10/2013 22:15

Oh my days! You must look like a different person Grin
I think that's what I have done with my metabolic rate through years of stupid diets. I'm hoping that the up down method will shock it a little into action.

BsshBossh · 19/10/2013 22:25

alfiemama my before/after photo is in my profile. Apart from a dabble in Atkins I've never dieted in my life so I guess my metabolism is still strong despite being in my 40s. Hence being able to lose well on high (compared to others) calories.

KickassCoalition · 19/10/2013 22:42

Hi All, newbie here.
I've lost about 3 stone altogether, 2 myself, 1 on slimming world but I was finding that really hard and starting to binge eat.

I am an horrific binge eater :( for instance, yesterday I did really well at FD 500 cals on the nose, and today I cannot even confess how many cals I have eaten.

I have managed to stay between 9.13 and 10.5 for the last 4 months or so, WI at 10st this morning, but really through a binge/starve cycle, so I am hoping that doing 5:2 will help even it out.

I'm choosing Mon and Fri as my FDs. Feeling a bit lost really and none too pleased with myself for today.

I'm going with 500 for FD and 1900 (my TDEE) for NFD but today is probably more like 19000!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2013 23:08

Hi Kickass Mon & Fri are my FDs too. Good to have company.

You did really well hitting 500 yesterday. Saturday seems to be the day for most of us to let our hair down, so forget it. You have a brand new NFD tomorrow to kick ass.

To avoid excess calories (thanks to talkinpeace !):

  1. No snacks ever between meals.
  2. Drink lots of water every day, especially have a big glass as soon as you get up.
  3. Eat each mouthful mindfully and don't eat anything you don't enjoy.
KickassCoalition · 19/10/2013 23:43

Thanks bigchoc, that cheered me up. I'm thinking no breakfast, decent soup and salad for lunch and a wrap for tea.

and more water. I have a chronic diet coke addiction... One step at a time though!

whimsicalname · 20/10/2013 00:04

Thanks cuckoo. I confuse people because I'm in the US, so 5 hours behind, so when I post in the afternoon, most of you are tucked up in bed already. He's been very brave, but notably sitting with his hands between his legs. I'm trying to talk him out of cycling to work on Monday though.

Welcome kickass and was it Alfie? I can't check back.

Hope you're feeling better mummyof2. I think the whole point of these threads is to have the occasional rant isn't it? I was feeling very unappreciated last week after my husband came back from a week in the UK (seeing my friends amongst other things) and my kids who had been vile to me all week were lovely to him.

Definite splurge today, including a crab feast on a deck over the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore, which is really very naice and not at all like The Wire. Well, until you go about 3 streets behind the harbour. Now drinking gin and thoroughly enjoying it.

Breadandwine · 20/10/2013 02:08

Finally managing to catch up with this thread after 2 frantic days - 6 hours teaching yesterday, plus another 6 hours today, along with our monthly dinner out with friends last night.

And there was lots of catching up to do! Welcome all those who've recently joined - as I've often said, you've come to the right place! Smile

Ooh should've said tmi alert BreadandWine

Cuckoo I don't think such an alert is necessary - after all, this is Mumsnet, right?

We guys should take you as we find you! Smile

And thanks for the kind words. Thanks

I might do zero-cal shorter 24 hr fasts, say between early supper Thursday to late supper Friday, as a variation.
Has anyone compared the effectiveness of the 24-hr / 36-hr FD ?

Frenz, if you're fasting for 24 hours then eating normally, as I see it, you're getting all the 'body repair' health benefits of a fast - but, since calorie restriction isn't involved, there'll be no weight loss. So, for maintainers, this is a perfectly good technique.

It's also what I and a lot others do - either when we've over-indulged of an evening, or when we intend to over-indulge later in the day. Another name for it is a 'mini-fast'.

A 36 hour period without any calories - or a liquid fast - is just that. I do it on occasion because I, and many others, find it much simpler going without food altogether than eating

thinkcan · 20/10/2013 02:25

Came back after two weeks away and so pleased that my scales show no weight gain despite much feasting, hardly any fasting apart from a couple of mini-fasts and not much exercise. I did skip breakfast on most days though to allow myself the freedom to eat out with friends for lunches and dinners. I love this WOL.

Bssh I love what you wrote about feeling secure enough to take your stress out on each other. A very positive way of looking at the inevitable fights that happen in every marriage especially during the earlier years when the kids are still young and put of stress in your days. After 25 years of marriage, I have learned that a few good mantras are ever so important to keep things in perspective. Mine include "Listen with your heart, not your ears", "this too shall pass", "this is just one bad day, it does not define my marriage".

BsshBossh · 20/10/2013 07:33

thinkcan those are great mantras. And it's not just our spouses... when my DD is rude and irrational with me (especially when she's tired after school) I remember what I was like with my parents as a child and how I vented on them because I knew they loved me and would never leave me.

mummyof2girlsx · 20/10/2013 08:17

Good Morning!

BsshBossh and thinkcan you are both so right, thanks for putting things into perspective.

Today is a new day and I got a sincere apology this morning from DH before he left for work Smile

Just looked at your before and after picture Bssh WOW!!! You look fantastic!

Itsaboatjack · 20/10/2013 09:53

Morning all.

Dd1's birthday today so party and Cake later and as I managed to overcome last nights cravings for munchies it shall be eaten guilt free.

alfiemama · 20/10/2013 09:55

Thanks for the lovely welcome everyone.
Bsssh are can't view profiles as on iPad but will have a look later.
Mummy glad he apologised. Here's to a new day.

After being good yesterday I feel quit evangelical and now don't want to eatWink but I know that's not the idea behind it.
My friend has borrowed scales for her suitcase so going to not weigh myself for a week. Then I can give it a good go without the worry of how much I've lost hanging over me.

Chocupid · 20/10/2013 10:53

Ok after losing nearly 3stone on the 5.2 regime since feb. I have lost the plot... I know it works so why have I stopped for the last 6 weeks or so??
So stupid as I have put on 8lbs all on tummy Sad and feel very bloated!
Im feeling very angry with myself.
Feel free to give me a telling off!
So enough with the wingeing and onto plan of attack...
I aim to have a reduced calorie (not FD) day today, no carbs (hard as Sunday is usually my blow out day) in preparation for a FD tomorrow.
Anyone else fallen off the wagon fancy joining me??
Think of the Christmas dresses... We could lose another stone (my aim) before then! So back to it and bring it on...Smile

JB30 · 20/10/2013 10:59

Morning folks, just about coming out of 4 (slightly too enthusiastic) NFD's. Ran a tad amuckBlush. Working on reeling it in despite wandering thru the kitchen in a slightly hungover state, guzzling coke and picking at crisps - lets just call that breakfast and move away from the presses, ahem. Plan for a second breakfast of buttery toast was thankfully scuppered by mould, gross but handy. 4 mile walk planned and something tasty/non take away for lunch.
I seem to fall over the wagon from time to time, it can take a varying amount of days to clamber back on but I think I'm getting there. I'm going to enjoy today properly, get the things I want to eat but next week Mon-Thurs will have to be planned with military precision to avoid disaster. I'm 2 days away with work and then weekend away. Eek, going to be tough. Apologies for me me me, feeling a bit adrift, needed a touch of the blah blah blah, hope y'all have a fab day

JB30 · 20/10/2013 11:02

Chocupid just saw your post after I submitted mine. I don't know why we do this to ourselves, so self sabotaging. But wow 3 stone - thats amazing! 8 pound will be gone with 3 weeks of good 5:2'ing. Glad to see your here, first step to jumping back in the wagon, I'll budge up and make a spaceWink

wrigglebum · 20/10/2013 11:13

Chocupid- just think of the six weeks as a holiday, and be grateful you're ready to jump back on the wagon with only 8lbs extra to go. As JB says, you're only maybe a few weeks from getting rid of that 8lbs, then the rest will just keep coming. 3 st is a fantastic achievement so 8lbs will be a piece of piss! What about adding in a new exercise to give you a boost to do it. I'm evangelical about anything by Jillian Michaels Grin.

JB- put the coke down! It's way more fun to eat those calories than drink them (unless it's booze). Go for a quick walk to clear your head, write today off diet wise and grab some bits for a cleansing FD tomorrow.

Well, after 3 NFDs I've dropped more weight Hmm. Was just under 9st5 this morning, lowest weight since my teens.

mummyof2girlsx · 20/10/2013 11:28

chocupid 8lbs will be gone in no time! 3st is an amazing weight loss so don't beat yourself up about having a break.

JB I think we all have days/weeks where we overindulge more than usual, but thats the beauty of this WOL, we know that within a couple of fasts the damage is undone Smile

wrigglebum thats fantastic!

I'm looking forward to a lovely roast later followed by Cake and custard.......will fast tomorrow Grin

Emmabryant123 · 20/10/2013 12:09

Some body kick me up the back side.
I've got ironing, polishing, change bed covers and hoovering to do.
All I've done so far is make my rolls for work tomorrow and squashed them lol so got squashed sandwiches tommorow but not wasting them or making new ones. It's only because I'm greedy with the filling and then go to wrap them and half the filling spills out lol. They look a right mess. Will taste nice though .Going to take a banana and maybe hmm an apple. But never eat it as I find my rolls filling. I get them 50/50 kingsmill rolls. Their so nice. Dd always moans I squash them.
I've got tuna crunch in one, tuna, red pepper, onion n mayo and egg mayo in the other.

i40.tinypic.com/290q5ci.jpg

My healhtly dinner last night.
Having something with new pots n veg again today.
Can't decide on fish cakes, chicken Kiev, burger or sausage though lol.
Tuesday is my fast day this week. Planning soup for lunch. Fish n veg for tea.
I'm doing one day a week 500 cal and one mini fast 1200 a week. One splurge day then rest of week sensible eating. I lost half a pound this week. I don't mind loosing it slowly.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 20/10/2013 12:09

Afternoon everyone!

Just finished my lunch, soup, oatcakes and lime pickle. Delicious. I went for a 5k bike ride this morning so I am feeling very virtuous.

wriggle is right JB fizzy drinks are such a waste of cake calories!

I'm fasting tomorrow too, and I'll take the DDs out for a long walk.

Talkinpeace · 20/10/2013 13:14

Emmabryant A small kick.
Get the kids to change their own beds.
You do the ironing.
Get the kids to each hoover two rooms, you do the rest
Stuff polishing.
As my Grandmother said, a tidy house is the sign of an empty mind Grin

Kickass Welcome
But
)))))))))))))))))))))) Diet Coke ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
and all diet drinks.
Evil things that make you fatter because they nadger your insulin system by constantly confusing it.

wrigglebum · 20/10/2013 13:50

Yes, I agree with tip about diet drinks. I used to be an absolute coca cola fiend. Whether I had regular or diet, it never made a difference to my weight. The diet ones made my tummy feel strange, and I had to eat with them. I decided to cut out all fizzy drinks, juices etc (partly because ds2 was always desperate to try a bit of whatever I was having and I wanted to set a better example) and very quickly and easily lost half a stone.

I now only have sugary or diet drinks as a very occasional treat- when we're out for lunch or instead of wine in the evening etc. I have them less than once a week now. I drink water, herbal tea and fizzy water and feel much better for it, plus I've saved a fortune.

Emmabryant123 · 20/10/2013 13:51

Talkinpiece.
I have got my eldest dd1 stripping her bed and tidying her room up a bit.
I have done the ironing.
I have hoovered down stairs...
Dd2 is only four and ds 1 so can't make them do much. But dd2 and ds are playing a game of who can put the most toys back in boxes ...
I've had a nice shower.
We all had peanut butter and banana on toast for breakfast.
But I have snacked on feta cheese, red pepper batons and olives oops.

Anyone else find they make sarnies for work and they get squashed?

Emmabryant123 · 20/10/2013 13:54

Eg diet drinks.
I don't find it makes any difference to me.
I have a coke or diet coke once or twice a week... Love real coca cola...
I also drink sugar free squash but I don't get many sugar cravings at all.
Buying a tub of Ben and Jerries on the 23rd November to eat the night before me and hubby go to NYC for the week.
