Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all. I'm off soon to watch four films in three different parts of London at the film festival here so it's going to be a busy day and good to do a mini-fast. All this peanut butter talk has got my tastebuds going so after a coffee and skinny popcorn in Cafe Nero I'm heading to M&M's World to have a small bag of munchies to take into the first film. I'm planning on eating about 800 - 1000 cals and have nothing from 8pm when the third film ends.

Enjoy your weekends and good luck today helles.

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 09:27

Oh dear, I'm falling asleep watching the dd's swim. I should have my cosie and gone for a swim too. Next week I will I think.

Enjoy your films South. My dd's love m&m world and are always asking to go there. I think whoever came up with that idea is a marketing genius; outrageously expensive but still always so busy.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 19/10/2013 10:05

Sounds like a really fun day south

Enjoy the ice cream, those who are having a B&J fest!

We are going to the theatre this morning (11.30 start) then for salt and pepper tofu at our favourite Chinese, then visiting the in-laws. Hurrah for NFDs!

Anyway, official weigh in this morning, which surprised me, another 1lb off. Yesterday was basically a mini-fast, I was over 500 but nowhere near my TDEE. I didn't expect to lose with only one proper fast day.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 19/10/2013 11:38

So today is turning into a minifast after a forgot I was fasting and had a slice of toast with my egg and a sausage roll with my cuppa soup. On the plus side, I thoroughly enjoyed both Halloween Blush

Chicken and steamed veg for tea - surely I can't mess that up?!

alfiemama · 19/10/2013 14:31

Hey everyone. Room for another little one?
It's all pretty new to me but have been lurking and thought hmmm this sounds better than low carbing. For me anyway.
Can I just eat very low cal for 2 days and then splurge? I don't think I could manage a fast. Or is better to do 4.3?

Talkinpeace · 19/10/2013 15:01

Welcome alfiemama - there is ALWAYS room for new people to join us.
Have a read through the tips and hints thread as there are lots of permutations to make it work.
4:3 is hard work. Start small and build up.

And for the fun of it, tell us a bit about yourself, your targets and your aims Smile

BetsyBell · 19/10/2013 15:04

Hi Alfiemama, always room for another :)

Of course you can fast - all you really have to do is skip breakfast then eat a small lunch and a small dinner (lots of veg/salad leaves, some protein, no carbs seems to work well). Or you may find you can go longer...

And lots of sugar-free hot drinks/big glasses of water. Hunger comes in waves it doesn't increase.

You'll be amazed how even one successful fast can change your attitude to hunger and food.

And remember "you can eat it tomorrow"!

Try to avoid splurging - well maybe one day a week is ok Wink

Thanks Betsy and Talkin. Talkin we spoke on a low carb thread and you suggested I join you. What concerns me with low carbing is the hair loss. As I experience this already I don't want anything to add to it. I naturally try and have good and bad days anyway so think this could work for me. I just seem to yo yo on same weight though and need the scales to keep moving down

I have about a stone really to lose but have a wedding coming up in December (friends) and would like to feel good.
I can easily eat very little during the day so that is fine for me. It's just the evenings I struggle with as I live with a feeder.

I've started today (as got a bad cold) so only had an apple and a half tin of tomato soup. Going to have a brew now as feeling a little hungry.

I need to find some recipes now for fasting days.

alfiemama · 19/10/2013 15:20

Awwww thanks Talkin GrinSmile

Talkinpeace · 19/10/2013 16:05

the other great resource is here ...

eatriskier · 19/10/2013 16:16

PB B&Js has been purchased. A pumpkin spice latte has been drunk. I am virtuously cooking myself a stew for fast days right now so I can get away with the naughtiness.

Whilst perusing in Sainsbury's to see if I could come up with a way of making half the amount of stew I normally do (and therefore can freeze to) I discovered two things. Itsu have a giant thai noodle soup pot out (454 calories for all of that - perfect for a fast day or non fast day I suppose) and their clearance aisle had the bottle green lime and coconut someone mentioned a while back (betsy or bssh maybe?). DH is angling for some of that too I think.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 19/10/2013 16:38

Oooohhh....the vegan fair we popped into this afternoon was fabulous. I resisted the urge to snack on freebies and have bought myself a little box of maple truffles for my dessert this evening. Yum.

BsshBossh · 19/10/2013 16:55

NSV - visited a craft/vintage festival today and tried on an independent designer's sweatshirt. It was size small. I was so chuffed, I bought it :) Have never purchased size small anything that I can remember!

Talkinpeace · 19/10/2013 18:18

Yo Bssh that is excellent.
Going out for supper tonight now that my big 5 hour meeting this morning is done and dusted

alfiemama · 19/10/2013 19:31

Thanks for the other link, Talkin.
Bsshbosh that is really inspiring. Can I be cheeky and ask how much you have lost? (Sorry if you have said on thread just it's quite a lot to go through) Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2013 19:46

Bssh Very rewarding NSV for your hard work.

Saturday is usually Frenzy Day. I've eaten masses of delicious food and enjoyed every mouthful - do calories count if they are mindfully naughty ones Wink ?
I also did 80 mins spin and weights, so one spot of virtue in the orgy.

I'm reading my 3rd book of the day, another vice, total bliss.

Hope everyone else enjoyed Saturday too.

BsshBossh · 19/10/2013 19:47

alfiemama 46 lbs doing basic calorie counting last year; 30 lbs doing 5:2 this year; another 9 lbs to go.

AngieM2 · 19/10/2013 20:30

Ok, so this is my 'splurge day' of the 5:2 week (and its not over yet. But given what has been consumed so far, I think a 4:3 may be in order next week...with the 4 being FD and the 3 NFD. Eek.

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 20:32

Phew, got through the munchies feeling. 1/2 an hour ago I was close to getting the bread out and making toast with butter; instead I went for a shower, have done a face mask and now sitting with a cup of tea and feeling so glad I didn't give in to temptation.

eatriskier · 19/10/2013 20:45

I am porky piggy. I have died and gone to peanut butter heaven. And tomorrow is mum's roast dinner! However I have consumed enough this evening to more than cover not having breakfast and lunch being late tomorrow. Monday's FD is going to be well needed for detox purposes.

Although I feel I worked hard for my peanut butter heaven as I have been on my feet nearly all day doing something or other, which sadly included a deep clean of the fridge - DH's shelf stacking somehow made something explode in there. I took it all out, cleaned everything down, threw out a small jar of something, put it all back and there was tons of space. What the hell he did is beyond me.

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 20:48

I need to have a none 5:2 related moan!! Had an awful couple of hours involving a disagreement with my husband. I look forward to weekends as its the only time all of us (me, girls and hubby) have any quality time. He has been working all day so I tried to make this evening lovely by organising a nice evening meal for us all, and he came home from work like a bear with a sore head....obviously tired from travelling and working all day and totally took it out on me! I feel so angry/upset, he works away quite a lot and I work part time and also juggle kids/childcare etc and never moan and tonight I just feel totally unappreciated Sad

sorry for the moan everyone......feel free to ignore my self pitying post!

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 21:03

Oh mummy I hope he sorts himself out soon so you enjoy the rest of your weekend. If it's any consolation my dh was the same last night, taking his work related stress out on me, we work together too so everything became my fault Hmm. He has been quite sheepish today at least.

BsshBossh · 19/10/2013 21:10

Oh mummy that sucks. DH and I sometimes take our stress out on each other - it comes from a sense of security that neither of us will leave so the other becomes a safety valve to offload. It doesn't make it hurt any less though and I constantly fight with myself to remember that when I'm short with DH. Hope your night improves... Thanks

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 21:23

Thanks Ladies for listening to my rant and responding Thanks

I am not normally one share my problems, but you are such a lovely bunch I just felt the need to shared my problems!

I am feeling better already, he has took himself off to bed best place for him and hopefully I will get an apology tomorrow. In the mean time I am enjoying some girly time with DD1 (chocolate for DD and Wine for me Grin
