Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all. I do love this WOL Grin !
I can do my regular Sunday am fasted training without worrying I'm catabolising muscle.
2 espressos and zero-cal BCAA fueled 2 happy hours: HIIT spin and lifting.

Late lunch - Just going to take delicious veg pizza out of the oven. Grapes, then big mixed salad, finally rice pud with lashings of vanilla, cinnamon & almond milk. I'll savour every mouthful. Yum, see you all later !

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 14:17

PS has anyone made brown rice pud and has a rexipe for it .

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 14:18

Recipe ? Sigh

Greenkit · 20/10/2013 14:35

Sneeks into thread can I join?

BMI of 42+

And im 42

Before I have a heart attack, please help me Sad

mummyof2girlsx · 20/10/2013 14:43

Welcome Greenkit you've come to the right place Smile. When are you thinking of starting?

MrsFlorrick · 20/10/2013 14:44

Welcome Greenkit. Grin

Fear not. This works and the support on this thread is absolutely amazing!!! Can't tell you how all these lovely people have helped me.

As for starting point and age. FWIW. After DC 2 I was 38 and over 16 stone (had been 10.5 stone pre DC).

I have now lost all but the last 6/7lbs. My BMI is around 22 and I fit into all my old size 10 and 12s (I'm 5' 10") and I am now 40 yo.

Tried lots of diets. Weight watcher (shite), Dukan (good weightloss but unsustainable), low carb (ok but not so great for me), and finally 5:2.

I will add more later but I need to sort out PILs and DC. Hmm

Sophiste · 20/10/2013 14:45

Welcome Greenkit. I'm a relatively recent joiner but already I think of 5:2 as a wonderful "secret" I've been let into which gives me the power to improve my health and happiness. You'll get so much support and encouragement here.

I've just been to a conference and seen lots of people I hadn't seen for a while - it was so gratifying to receive the compliments on how well I'm looking. One person said she was going to have to take me shopping for a new wardrobe as my clothes were hanging off me! Having participated fully in the social side of the event I am now avidly looking forward to a cleansing FD.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 14:52

Welcome, greenkit! This is a very friendly group and 5:2 really works as a WOL, for all sizes & ages: I'm 57 and I 'm not the oldest.
Very useful tips at the top of the thread.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 14:58

greenkit Why not start tomorrow with an FD (500 cal fast day). Several of us do Mondays to recover from an over-indulgent weekend Wine Cake Grin and we encourage each other during the day

Breadandwine · 20/10/2013 15:20

Welcome Greenkit - as BicChoc says, why not start tomorrow?

Check out the 5:2 recipes on this thread.

Something for every taste! Smile

Greenkit · 20/10/2013 15:30

Thank you for the welcome, I am so fed up of being fat and totally unfit

I work shifts, earlys lates and nights...I did try 5:2 before but got confused as to when you start and finish the fasting bit.

Is it like midnight to midnight
I know you can have 500 cals in the fasting day

MelanieCheeks · 20/10/2013 15:51

Welcome along, Greenkit!

NFD here, hubbyis cooking slow roats pork belly.....

But I did find in Sanisburys loads of the "Look what we found" pouches down to £1 each - great range including curries and meatballs, all under 500 cals, handy to have as a standby.

Talkinpeace · 20/10/2013 16:17

Greenkit
Welcome.
We are all ages and varieties. I believe BreadandWine is the oldest, but he is a grandad Grin, and our youngest posters are in their 20's - so there will be people you can 'team up' with as you start to succeed.

Lots and lots and lots of us fast on Mondays : its a good way to settle after a relaxed weekend.

So,
Monday morning - no breakfast, just tea or coffee. no snacks if you can just hot sugar free drinks for lunch and then something really filling off the recipes thread for supper = 500 calories

Tuesday : 2000 calories
Wednesday : 2000 calories
Thursday : same as Monday
Friday : 2000 calories
Saturday : relax and enjoy
Sunday : 2000 calories

that should get you heading in the right direction quite quickly.

AngieM2 · 20/10/2013 16:37

greenkit welcome. Re:shifts. On a late, dont eat before you go and take a soup to eat at tea time. On a night, I eat a small bowl of cereal or toast around 5am then when I get up around 3 eat nothing, if starving have a bit of salad around 7pm then go to bed about 10, its a really easy fast that I do after my last night. You will have to see how you feel fasting on a work day. I work for the NHS so its usually horrendously busy and you dont get chance to think about food. Good luck

Itsaboatjack · 20/10/2013 16:41

Hi Chocupid, I'm also just back after falling off the wagon and succumbing to the old me's bingeing cycles for a while. I've got it back under control again now though and am looking forward to tomorrow's FD.

We've just got back from dd1's birthday party. I didn't have time for breakfast before we left so so far today I've had a fish finger sandwich, a slice of cake and a glass of wine Grin. Not very balanced but hey, it's Sunday.

Not2bObvious · 20/10/2013 16:44

At last, after 5 months of 5:2'ing on MN and being worried about outing myself (lurked on mn for years - formerly as of today know As jb30) I've figured how to nc! Who knew, rtfm!
Ok ok, I wasn't very clear earlier, the coke danger had passed - I drank it ALL - and I do know it wasn't a good thing - but honestly thanks v much to those who commented, you truly are a fab supportive bunch. I am in no danger of repeating that particular mistake, next time I drink my cals they'll be grape based Grin
Oh boy, I need an FD tomorrow that's for sure

Preciousdaisybear · 20/10/2013 17:05

Welcome greenkit I am fairly new to this too and can say that that people on this thread are the nicest, most supportive and often the funniest people around. I have about 3 stone to lose and 5.2 seems to be working for me. I confess to loving wine and cake but so far am confining the wine to 1 day a week (whole bottle to myself yesterday Blush ) but cake is harder as always have it in the house for the DCs... It's a work in progress but so far I have lost 8lbs. I am sure it will be successful for you too.

Ok so what is this about diet coke etc? Are they no good to drink on FDs as have been using them to 'fill' up?

Greenkit · 20/10/2013 17:11

Talkinpeace & AngieM2

Thanks

I usually do 1 or 2 earlies, 2 or 3 lates, then always 2 nights, I may avoid fasting on a nightshift.

I can sort the fasting days because thats quite easy 500 cal in the middle of the day.

But meal ideas for the other days, and someone mentined portion sizes

Talkinpeace · 20/10/2013 17:16

www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-sodas-and-weight-gain-not-so-fast?page=3
The conclusion part on page three of the article points out that diet fizzy drinks condition your body to want "sweet" the whole time.
It is much better to wean yourself off fizzy a lot of the time.

In our house fizzy is drunk at the same time as alcohol.
So never during the day and generally not during the week.

Water is the best fast day drink.
Then tea, coffee, herbal tea, bovril, miso or equivalent.

Preciousdaisybear · 20/10/2013 17:42

Thanks TiP I like your idea of treating fizzy like alcohol. I am going to steal that one. If you hear huge eruptions you will know that I have passed this idea on the the DCs. Grin

postmanpatscat · 20/10/2013 17:59

Hello all and welcome new 5:2ers - definitely a good choice!

It's taken me ages to catch up with you all, I don't know where last week went but at least it's nearly half term and I'm off to the sunshine with DP and without teenagers, hooray!

Might squeeze in a fast this week to get bikini ready and compensate for a forthcoming week of all inclusive. I'm still maintaining on 13:1 or thereabouts instead of 5:2. My weight never fluctuates by more than a pound or two now. Odd really, that four people have commented on my weight loss in the last fortnight even though I haven't lost any more weight!

BsshBossh · 20/10/2013 18:28

Welcome Greenkit. I've been fasting since February and pretty much my pattern has always been (my TDEE is 2000):

Mon - fast, generally 500 cals but over the last month < 200 (cause no longer hungry for more)
Tue - around 1600/1700 cals
Wed - around 1600/1700 cals
Thu - fast, 500 cals but recently < 200
Fri - beginning of the weekend for me so around 2500 cals
Sat - 2500+ cals
Sun - around 2500 cals

We socialise around food alot over the weekend and DH is a real foodie, which is why I undereat during the working week.

I'm in my 40s, exercise 3-4 times a week and lose on average 1 lb a week. Slow and steady but that's what works for me.

eatriskier · 20/10/2013 18:42

Evening all.

Welcome newbies. You'll find there's rarely any of us who regret this choice. Which seems like a strange thing to say but we don't see too many people moaning and dropping out. Grin

Well today I finally fit into the lovely dress I picked up in summer. Its a badly mislabelled dress. It says large. I wear 10s in general and fit in their mediums no worries. Glad I stuck it out though coz it's worked well today with some leggings and a small Cardi

Trip to see the parents today as well as the mad auntie I mentioned before. So there's me with nearly 5 stone loss, dh with 30lbs loss and dm with 8lbs (which is more the impressive as she is battling drug bloat). Mad aunt still won't believe it's perfectly possible to live on 500 calories 2 times a week. She has been enthusing about my weight loss and people are wondering what I eat on fast days. I told her my pattern. That was no good. Dm told her she had 2 small meals. The was no good. Dh told her he had 2 meals and a cup a soup in the evening. Hmm was the noise we got. Dm went 'see there's 3 of us with great weight loss tackling this differently. Its quite adaptable'. Aunt declared she would just cut out alcohol (insert rofl emoticon here)

MrsFlorrick · 20/10/2013 19:01

Greenkit.

The really great thing about 5:2 is that you don't need any "special" food, you don't need to cut out any food groups (healthy ones mind, crisps are not a food group) and you can change you Fast Day every week to suit you and what you're doing that week.

I use My Fitness Pal to track calories even on non fast days. Otherwise of eat way too much. Or at least I would have before I started this.

You'll be amazed at how quickly 1800 calories feels indulgent to eat.

This is ultra sustainable. It also makes you very aware of your eating patterns and your downfalls (me: biscuits and snacking at inappropriate times).

I don't feel deprived or hungry all the time. I don't obsess about food and things I want to eat. If I have a bad day I can turn a fast day into a mini fast day (under 1000 cals) and hey presto I have still done some good.

Itsaboatjack · 20/10/2013 19:03

Lol eat, I think some people just cling to any excuse not to tackle their weight. Personally I'd rather keep my wine and lose the food for two days a week.

(Wine in moderation you understand, I'm not a complete alcoholic all the time )
