Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 21:16

bumped on the board for you - and others

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 21:19

whimsical You're nearly there ! Have a big drink of water, close the kitchen and brush your teeth. You can do this FD.

southeastdweller · 18/10/2013 21:26

Lovely to hear from you dines and itsaboat.

sweetiepie1979 · 18/10/2013 21:27

Thanks talkinpeace x

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 22:28

Well done BigChoc and Covered!!

Am amazed at self. Had most bizarre fd. This woe continues to surprise me. Had gone the whole day on 60 cals, all drinks, until 9:30 when had big bowl of salad with bacon and coleslaw.

In all honesty could've left it completely. Still something to work on - fact that it is ok to not eat at all sometimes - but was homemade coleslaw and can never resist!
I genuinely had no appetite all day though!?

Kept thinking I must've eaten something and forgotten about it lol!

No idea of cals in coleslaw but fair to say I'm within 500. Hurrah! first 4:3 feeling very proud and know it will come in handy when the dreaded totm approaches!

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 23:00

Well done, cuckoo ! Your coleslaw sounds delicious, obviously had to be eaten. You had a lovely supper and still came in under the 500.

Yes, this WOL is wonderful and we're learning more of its quirks - and our own individual physiology / psychology.

Well done all other FDers today. Night, night.

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 23:41

Fantastic cuckoo!

whimsicalname · 19/10/2013 01:06

Thanks bcf. I feel much better for my yummy chicken fajitas. I reckon on 100 cal each of chicken, veg and a tortilla, dollop of low fat sour cream and load of icy water. So with 100 cal of brunch (egg and spinach) I still have room for some chocolate chips. Roll on Saturday though I tell you. Well done everyone else who fasted today. Enjoy your weekend indulgences.

MissStrawberry · 19/10/2013 06:13

Morning if anyone else is up.

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 06:40

Morning MissS, I got up to go to the toilet and can't get back to sleep. Why are you up so early?

eatriskier · 19/10/2013 06:45

Morning itsa and misss. I also woke for the loo and can't go back to sleep. The kids aren't even up. But it's non fast Saturday and dh has decided I need to be treated to that new peanut butter Ben and Jerry's someone else mentioned up thread. And if I somehow manage to wangle getting near a Starbucks I just may have to have another pumpkin spice latte

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 06:54

Morning! I too woke early and couldn't get back to sleep. Kids are still snoring away and DH gone to work. NFD for me too eatriskier peanut butter Ben and Jerry's sounds amazing! Might follow suit and indulge this evening whilst watching x factor Grin

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 06:55

Morning eat. That peanut butter ice cream definitely needs to go on my shopping list. I wasn't a big fan of the pumpkin latte when I tried it last week though.

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 06:58

Morning mummy, my lot are all still asleep too. I had a brief thought of getting up and doing something useful like getting started on the housework, but catching up on MN in bed is much more fun. Wish the fairies would bring me a cup of tea though. Grin

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 07:09

You have made the better choice Itsaboat enjoy some peace while you can Grin. Where are those fairies when you need them Hmm, I have had to get out of my nice warm bed to make my own Brew

I had a really busy week at work and managed to fit it a 4:3 (I find fasting much easier at work) so going to enjoy some guilt free treats today.

MissStrawberry · 19/10/2013 07:09

Hi, Itsaboatjack I can't sleep as worrying about my son and his schooling. Half term now so can't do anything at all for two weeks.

Brew for you.

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 07:16

Morning MissStrawberry hope everything is ok. Not sure what the situation is but try not to worry (easier said than done I know!).
Thanks for you or Cake if its a NFD Wink

MissStrawberry · 19/10/2013 07:19

Definitely a NFD!!

Itsaboatjack · 19/10/2013 07:25

Sorry to hear that MissS, hope it's something that can be sorted soon. 2weeks for half term? Is that normal where you are? Mine have got another week before they break up.

Thanks for the Brew btw ladies

Littlest one has just joined me for cuddles with her stinky special blankie. Must get up soon though, swimming lessons this morning.

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 07:28

Grin Enjoy some treats today, you deserve it! That's the great thing about this WOL, being able to indulge without the guilt Smile

mummyof2girlsx · 19/10/2013 07:32

Morning cuddles are the best itsaboat Smile

Enjoy your weekends, whatever your plans may be.

Childrens party for my girls this afternoon, lots of loud and giggling 5 and 6 year olds........think I'll be ready for a Wine tonight!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 19/10/2013 07:45

Been awake an hour thanks to ds bringing his galaxy tab into my room to show me something "awesome" on minecraft Hmm

Had my splurge day on thursday so I have fd today and nfd sunday. Accidentally had a minifast yesterday so not sure how that will affect fd today but I'm not hungry yet.

As well as a tea-in-bed fairy, may I conjure up a finding-homes-for-random-things-that-just-seem-to-circulate-around-the-house-because-nobody-knows-where-they-should-be fairy?

MissStrawberry · 19/10/2013 07:53

My children have 2 weeks at half term as they are at an independent school due to difficult circumstances (would never have been our choice.)

cuckoo13 · 19/10/2013 08:53
