Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MelC ah! Bet he was lovely! If you cyber air kiss me that counts as if I have met too right??
Loved his series, good to know about cals in book!

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 19:06

womble
I get no crap from the trainers any more as they have seen that I've been looking lean and mean for nearly a year.
Grin and enjoy watching them fail TBH.

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 19:12

LIGHTBULB MOMENT

I was sitting in my Yoga class this morning doing the pranayama at the end with a bit about mindfulness and it hit me.
I actually started fidgeting I was so excited.

LOOK AT EVERY BITE YOU TAKE
Eating mindfully and with awareness seems to have made a big difference to those starting from high weights and with past food issues.

Eat what you like

  • 400g bar of dairy milk in one go. Fine. But look at each and every square before you put it in your mouth and decide if you actually want / need to.
  • Family pack of crisps after supper. Fine. But do not just shovel from bag to mouth. Lift out each crisp and look at it before scoffing.

Mealtimes
Turn off the telly, turn down the radio unless it is music, sit around the table
Make a point of looking at your food on the fork before you eat it.
Also then you'll stress less over what the kids are doing.
Meals will take longer, but you will savour them more.

And I'll be gobsmacked if eating mindfully makes fat people eat more or scrawny people eat less.

MissStrawberry · 18/10/2013 19:20

LOOK at what you eat is such an inspired idea. So many times I have gone to have another crisp, piece of chocolate, etc and realised the whole pack has gone. Totally mindless eating.

MelanieCheeks · 18/10/2013 19:23

Gok was lovely - he'd tweeted when he landed in Belfast this morning "Need a cuddle", and then the rain started. And it rained and rained. And by the time I reached the bookstore I was drenched. So I said to him "I know you tweeted that you want a cuddle, but I'm so drenched - we'll just air-kiss instead".

p195, if you want a sneaky peek when youre in a bookshop: 65 calorie Vietnamese Salad.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 19:36

TIP I already look at each crisp, to see which side to lick the flavour off innit. Does that count Hmm

Grin
Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 19:39

cuckoo13 Only if you re-dip it in the soured cream in between Wink

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 19:46

Mindful eating - good advice. Just what Paul McKenna, Gillian Riley etc write about. I could never truly learn mindful eating when I tried McKenna (I simply ate too much still and could never recognise genuine hunger and I lost minimal lbs) but now, after 8 months of 5:2 and giving my digestion a break it all makes sense and feels natural.

MelanieCheeks I lunched at the next table to Gok Wan during the summer. He was dining with a friend and her daughter. He seemed so natural and genuinely nice (not that I was eavesdropping much, of course not! Wink). When DH, DD and I went out he followed alone (I guess to call someone or to smoke?) and gave my 5 yo the sweetest smile and Hello.

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 19:53

Bssh mindful is a bit of an esoteric thing. Hard for those starting out to get. Look at every bite is indeed exactly the same thing but easily applied .... Yoga teacher thought I was ill as I am normally like a statue during pranayama!

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 19:56

Yes that's a great idea, I see where you're coming from: looking is easier to grasp and do so you're more likely to be successful.

dines · 18/10/2013 20:08

hi guys im bk those who remember meSmile
I started this diet at the end of march this year and lost a stone but,...I put it all bk on and now im bk to the same weight as I startedSad Sad I really want to lose that stone againShock and maintain it this time. im plaining on starting this again after the skool holiday. Has anyone kept there weight off and how r u finding the maintenance partSmile

whimsicalname · 18/10/2013 20:37

I'm probably not a terribly mindful muncher, but have definitely found I'm unwilling to eat things that aren't really delicious. So for example I was in Starbucks, and quite fancied a cake, but none of them looked completely yummy so I didn't bother.

I must say I'm flagging today. Only mid afternoon and I'm starving. I think Friday is psychologically tricky. Nearly there though UK fasters.

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 20:39

Welcome back Itsaboat and dines! Jump right back on the fasting wagon (we all fall off it - it's just real life that's all). Just pick a day and post on here for support and you'll soon start losing again. I stopped fasting for six weeks of the school summer holiday but I've since lost 10 lbs.

sweetiepie1979 · 18/10/2013 20:45

Can someone please advise me in which violent buy fit thus diet so I know what I'm doing, I have so many questions but the thread is going so fast and utensils busy I'm lost.....

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 20:49

Evening all. Cuckoo and CoveredInWee(tabix) Sounds like you had good FDs. Me too: 290 cals and kitchen now closed.

I had only 60 cal during the day, then 90 mins fasted training - abs and barbells, finishing with trampoline. I couldn't wait until I got home for a meal, so I had a 230 cal protein shake at the gym - 26 hrs after my last meal.

So full of energy, I then did my food shop (nothing really naughty) and laundry is spinning away. My cold is nearly gone already, amazing Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 20:55

At work, colleagues kept offering me cinnamon choc cookies , but I'm honestly not tempted on FDs. I took away 2 to enjoy tomorrow. I even enjoyed holding them under my nose a few minutes, like aromatherapy, but didn't feel hungry !!

tip One can enjoy delicious food without always having to consume it.

eatriskier · 18/10/2013 20:57

Hi dines and itsa

whim I'm similar with the yumminess necessity. A 'waste' of calories needs to be very worth it (in general that is). I'm seeing this as a lcv.

sweetiepie1979 · 18/10/2013 20:58

EhM sorry I'll try that again.... Can someone advise me which book to buy on the diet? I have so many questions and the thread is so busy and fast moving.

eatriskier · 18/10/2013 20:58

sweetie if you're looking for books then go for the Michael mosley and mimi Spencer one.

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 21:03

sweetie yes the Mosley & Spencer book is really good.

Junebugjr · 18/10/2013 21:07

Thanks for the advice bsshbossh
I've been wondering what's going on, my appetite has never disappeared apart from in pregnancy.
I'm not overweight BMI wise, but am for my small frame iykwim, I'm 5ft 2in as well so even 5lb shows on me. I could do with losing at least a stone.
Am sick with jealousy at the meeting with Gok Wan!

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 21:10

(((( dines )))) good to hear from you again ...

have a read through the tips and hints thread - we have lots of great ideas on there

at the end of the weekend if the vote is in favour I'll add my lookthen eat hint

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 21:11

sweetie I found useful ideas for FDs in "5:2 fast diet recipes" by Stephen Robinson, but there are several recipe books out and delends on personal taste.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 21:12

Oops, depends
