Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD here too and so far have had water and one black coffee

I know now exactly how I've come to be this weight - did some baking with DD yesterday. Crikey I'm a pig!

A spoonful of butter icing here, a taste there, all added up could easily be 300cals :-O

Still got a luscious vegetable stew with a few lentils in it for later

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 13:44

Should probably have fasted today but decided to 16:8 - and DH will be home tonight so will probably have Wine

Feeling cold
Yup, you will. You've done the equivalent of taking off two or three winter coats.

TiP's tip 1 : stand up to be on the computer. Adjust your desk or put the laptop on the kitchen counter. You stay MUCH warmer standing up.

TiP's tip 2 : do not turn the heating up in the whole house. Pick a room - ideally one with a sunny window. Colder houses make you burn more calories so aid your weight loss.

TiP's tip 3 : If like me you get really cold hands (Raynauds) , get a big fleece or jumper and keep the sleeves down over your hands .... remember to remove said manky jumper before going out to places

TiP's tip 4 : If you are really struggling, these are great www.marksandspencer.com/Heatgen-Long-Sleeve-Thermal-Top/dp/B0038FRUJS - or any thermal top ....

TiP's tip 5 : If in doubt, move around. Activity breeds activity, warms you up and burns calories. Blitzing a cupboard is a good workout and makes you feel better.

Thistroudeballeisinfire · 17/10/2013 13:49

Hi there !

Can I join your thread please ?

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 13:56

Thistroudeballeisinfire
Of course. Welcome. Pull up a chair and make yourself at home. This is a happy (if slightly daft) place.

Tell us a wee bit about yourself and your targets as then we are less likely to put our (well usually my) foot in it Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/10/2013 14:01

I am 16:8 today as well instead of fasting. I have got a horrible headache and feel a bit fluey.

Fasted from 7pm last night until 1pm today which is 18 hours. Now I am just going to try and keep the eating under control. I think TOTM might be approaching too which won't be helping.

welcome thistrou :)

Thistroudeballeisinfire · 17/10/2013 14:05

Thank you talkinpeace ! I have done the 5:2 diet a little while ago and it worked as I lost a stone but then I have stopped smoking and I almost put the whole stone back on.

I have 3 stones to lose in total. Until yesterday evening, I was doing the Slim and Save diet, you eat meal replacements all day and it's only 650 calories a day everyday until you are in Ketosis. Basically, you starve until you get into Ketosis...It's not for me, I was starting to hallucinate yesterday.

Now I want to do the 5:2 and will use my replacement paquets from the slim and save diet on fast days !

MrsFlorrick · 17/10/2013 14:22

Talkin. Was it you asking about the wrist measurement for body frame size? I can wrap my index finger around to fully meet the thumb. The middle finger over laps the thumb by a centimetre or so.

Last time I went to the GP I did ask about ideal weight for frame size etc. she said as I had a very small frame I should aim to keep my BMI between 20 and 21 for optimum health and she would consider me over weight if my BMI was over 22.5.

Whereas if I had a large body frame she said I could have a BMI of 24 and not be over weight.

Essentially there is such a thing as "big boned". And GPs clearly know about healthy weight for each frame size.

Talkin if it wasn't you sorry.

I have NSV of major proportion to report!! I've already done it on Trucks 6w6p thread.

I had a clothes "I will never again be slim enough to wear" pile. Well I have reclaimed the pile Grin

Including lots of size 10s and very small 12s. Grin

I still have 6lbs plus to loose but the fact I am wearing my old stuff means I am there. Plus I have more muscle now than I used to thanks to working out and lugging toddlers around.

I am so very happy Grin (shallow and vain).

The fat flabby horrible tummy is disappearing fast. It's pretty good under clothes. Obviously I'm not bikini ready just yet but am working in it.

It's just fab.

What's really helped lose inches is that I have been doing carb cycling along with 5:2. Ie eating low carb (under 30g of carb p day) two days a week and eating higher carb the rest and fasting. Body builders have used this for years to lose fat. It's supposed to create "metabolic confusion" and burn more fat.

I can report is works. Especially towards the end when the last few inches cling stubbornly!

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 14:32

Welcome this trou. You will get lots of support here.

I had a small lunch. Just had too. Will adjust dinner accordingly.

Have freezing cold hands and also, I am forever needing a wee Confused. I have fibro but not sure that would give me cold hands.

Have to brave the cold outdoors shortly but thank goodness I finally have a decent coat!

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 14:36

Hurray MrsF!!

I now have about 3/4 cm of a gap when I do the thumb and fore finger whatsit. What does that make me?

I have loads of clothes that don't fit and I think they make me look as over weight as I used to be when I wear them.

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 14:49

Woohoo MrsF :)

MrsFlorrick · 17/10/2013 14:52

Miss s. I think that makes you medium frame. I guess that means you should be between 21 and 23 BMI for optimum health.

Sorry about all the boasting but I didn't think this day would come having put on so much weight.

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 15:18

Interesting, so that makes me medium framed too and as of last week's weight I'm (just) at "optimum health" for my frame size (BMI 22.9). Hurrah! Still aiming for BMI 21 though.

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 15:24

MrsFlorrick
It was me, and interesting that your GP 'personalised' the ideal weight range.
Yup, some people have a broader frame
MissStrawb that includes you, so your target for ideal will be in the 23.5 to 24.5 range

small = overlap
medium = just touch
large = gap
BUT above a BMI of 26 or so, there will be a fair bit of fat on the wrists. so everybody should aim for 25 and then see what their frame is ....

Bssh You have done absolutely brilliantly .... do we get an up to date piccy soon?

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 15:28

Thanks Tip yesterday was moaning about having to face another winter without central heating. Today I celebrate Grin

Mindful reminder- just managed to do 675 cals on crappy unprepared for lunch - would've wrecked a fd.
Just need to be good tonight now, as I tend to be more of an evening muncher and like my dinners hot and stodgy when cold, with a little bit of something sweet afterwards. According to my target weight daily cals, I will only need 1500 ish! Hoping appetite shrinks enough in line with weight or I am in trouble lol!

PoshPaula · 17/10/2013 15:34

Somewhere the hydration was good. I drank much more water and don't feel exceptionally hungry today so this has improved.

MrsFlorrick I feel this should be a safe place to boast. All boasting must be allowed! It provides an incentive for the rest of us.

Breadandwine · 17/10/2013 15:41

Just to say about the feeling cold bit: IIRC, it's a good indication that fasting is working.

Haven't time ATM to look for the reference, but there is research out there that says feeling cold is generally a good thing. It happens to me rarely, but often enough for me to keep a pair of thick walking socks by the bed, just in case. Smile

For anyone who has more time, I suggest you google 'Feeling cold whilst fasting', or somesuch.

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 15:43

Would like to ask a question about boob saggage if I may.

I am 35, exclusively breast fed dd for 18 mths, (she's now 8 btw) and my boobies got to mammoth proportions. I am now determined to get to pre preg weight once and for all. What I want to know is... what can I realistically expect my boobs to look like at end of it? Same question applies to skin shrinking in general, as the last time I was slim I was mid 20's and know gravity is more of an enemy these days!
I'm going to be back on the 'market' after 12 yrs in the near future and am already feeling like used saggy baggy goods!

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 15:46

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 15:46

Ooh should've said tmi alert BreadandWine Blush

Hello btw! Have always loved your enthusiastic posts on here. Big kiss to you X

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 15:56

mrsF great reclaimage

tip I have no clue what that is as I blatantly haven't been paying attention to mumsnet, but if its to do with helpful tipsters then you deserve it.

cuckoo I am the bearer of bad news. Well in my case at least. We're all different after all. I was always of the large breasted variety, but years of poorly fitting bras, a very short stint of pumping and several stone weight loss later I am not, and they are miserable saggy things Sad. However I do highly recommend getting a decent fitting in by somewhere like Bravissimo when you can because in a bra, my boobs just look like they're slightly smaller than they were and are in a decent position on my chest! Also a well fitting bra makes you look slimmer.

PoshPaula · 17/10/2013 15:57

Can't help you there, cuckoo, I've never had much of a bust, to speak of. I'm sure there will be others on here who have the expertise though.

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 15:59

Oh, and the pumpkin spice latte was sooooo worth the extra calories today. Don't think I'll make a habit of that on a fast day but I may make it an NFD treat when I can. Brew

MelanieCheeks · 17/10/2013 16:43

Sounds very nice, whatever it is, tip!

I've learned today that I can't have food around me on a FD. I've devoured a finger of fudge that was nestling in the bottom of my handbag, and my emergency almond-roast broad bean-goji berries bag has been dipped into several times.....

I'll go and tot up the damage on MFP, hopefully wont take me too far over 500.

GatoradeMeBitch · 17/10/2013 16:55

I'm on my fast day, I've eaten my 500 calories - and I've got serious munchies!!

I just went and brushed my teeth in hopes that a mint taste in my mouth will put me off. But I'm badly craving junk food for some reason.

MrsFlorrick · 17/10/2013 16:56

Cuckoo. I put on 6 stone and have now lost about 5.5 stone. I essentially did it twice with both pregnancies and I am v old (40). And I BF both times. My boobs went from a very modest B to an F when BFing! I am now a DD so my boobs have remained larger than they were.

Not too saggy despite everything. However before they were extremely perky and no bra needed as they held in position without.

My stomach however is another tale. It currently doesn't look amazing without clothes.
