The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Betsy, thanks for the salad dressing tip, I'll try that. My usual dressing is 1/3rd mayo 2/3rds yoghurt, with dijon mustard and lemon juice, so it's not as heavy as straight mayo, but your version sounds lovely.

In the end, I was feeling so crappy healthwise (sinus migraine, blah blah boring) that I just made my usual salad, with a fillet of poached salmon instead of ham as intended because I couldn't be arsed to go to the shop. So my FD ended up around the 700cal mark, but I'm going to count it anyway.

And! I lost 2lb this week. I may well put one back on, but the scales are at last moving back in the right direction. And the clocks went forward this week, so I can get some jogging in again.

Cuckoo, put the Christmas choc in a cupboard that you don't need to access, and post the key to a friend? The colder weather definitely makes things harder, I'm in Australia and so we're only just coming out of winter...basically I was just maintaining for about two or three months there.

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 07:38

bssh I'm bloody freezing. Constantly. I always was a cold person until I got pregnant with dd, so seem to have 3 years where I've been OK but now it's back with a vengeance. Heating is up to its highest agreed level with dh (he is a jot runner no matter what he weighs) as he grabbed my hands last night and they were like ice blocks. Getting some nice exercise in my hiking around my living room to get warmth circulating. I have some onesies in size 20 - I may use that extra space to put more clothes under them when it gets colder at night!

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 07:41

cuckoo definitely the cold is making it far harder. I tend to find myself craving Irish stew on a fast day, which I could fit in easily but can't fit into my freezer Sad so I find myself trying to pack as much hot food into me as possible, which is hard when you're as fussy as me.

BetsyBell · 17/10/2013 08:07

bssh It's a good question. It was always my extremities that would feel most cold (hands, feet, neck, head) where there was little fat anyway. But thinking about it (as I'm sat here in the most enormous jumper), I'm far less likely to peel off a layer in the day. Also, I do seem to have adopted an evening blanket for when I'm slobbed on the sofa.

And I do look an awful lot better in jumper dresses these days! Grin

On reflection, that's probably a YES, I am colder than when I was packing a 50lb layer of insulating fat.

But I don't think I find the cold harder to fast in, just makes chugging down the hot drinks more pleasant and there's always hot soups and stews to look forward to.

So after coming on here last week moaning that my weight was bouncing up and down i decided this was the week to start focusing. Have done 2 FD's. (Mon/wed) and stuck to TDEE on Tue and i'm 4lb down this morning! Ok, i know i shouldnt count it but I am! Plus, TMI alert - havent had a poo since Sunday night.....this is a side effect i dont like. Just need to stick to TDEE now for the rest of the week.

somewherebecomingrain · 17/10/2013 08:22

ali it was important. Btw great tip about soup and carrot sticks. I've been doing carrot sticks and ive been doing soup but they'd be so much nicer together.

somewherebecomingrain · 17/10/2013 08:23

poshpaula how did the hydration experiment go? Trying to follow suit today.

PoshPaula · 17/10/2013 08:25

OMG the feeling of triumph! I weighed in this morning and came in under my target weight. However.... Yesterday was a very strict FD so this weight will rise a bit by Monday. Still, it's encouraging! This WOE does work!

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 09:01

Morning all. Well made it through minus choc. Weigh in this morning 11st 11lb so -1. Nothing will beat the high of a several pound loss, but I just keep telling myself maintaining or losing anything is an improvement on where I was. A stone is the most I tend to lose before giving up/losing interest. The lowest I've got to since weight gain is 11.6 so until I hit that, won't really feel like I'm making progress.
However I do love the way this wol makes me feel (apart from mid craving) and I def feel much slimmer in clothes. Love that! My wardrobe is expanding as my belly shrinking!
Bsssh Eat Tortoise I DEF feel colder. I am normally the 'hot one' Wink. It is unheard of for me to complain of cold; yet I am layered up, always have blanket on sofa now, and am always looking for excuse to hibernate Grin

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 09:07

p.s Well done AngieM PoshP!
It is everyone else's success stories (or struggles) that keep you focused. When you all lose I think 'that could be me' when you struggle 'it's not just me'. Then the cavalry come in with reassurance and encouragement and quite frankly - it's a beautiful thing. sob! Wink
Thanks all round!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 17/10/2013 09:28

bssh I've lost erm...30something lbs and I am significantly colder! Not a good side effect in this house as we have no central heating. I am stealing DP's jumpers.

Today, NFD and lunch out with DP. Looked at the menu online...I'm having a hummus and roasted veg on rye and an americano. It's a gluten free cafe, which is pretty awesome. Taking the DDs to the swings first though, they cooking for tonight's party later. Quite looking forward to FD tomorrow after all that!

headintheclouds · 17/10/2013 10:48

Supposed to be a FD for me but I'm off work with a bad cold feeling rotten. I can't face fasting today ... not eaten yet but may just do 16:8 instead and maintain this week.( I've been bouncing up and down the same 2 lbs for the last few weeks anyway so I don't suppose it'll make much difference!)

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 11:11

Morning all Smile.

FD here. Tummy rumbling but I have learnt a trick. Easy to ignore breakfast so I just say try and get past lunch and then I am allowed dinner. By the time it gets to about 2pm I am fine.

So distracted I forgot to buy Danish bread and sandwich thins while in the shop so annoyed.

Checked bank balance and thank goodness there is plenty in already for the little strawberries and furry ones!

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 11:37

Sorry for msg overload but I've got 4 wks pent up! Smile
Am here for a whinge. Nfd today and my usual reverse psychology kicking in. I could legally eat anything I want now, within reason, and yeeettttt I don't bloody want anything! This seems to be pattern forming with me. All day on my fd I am thinking of food - even though I'm usually good - I can't stop thinking I want something. Nfd however, I'm fine. It's ridiculous. Just had a biscuit I didn't want - just because I could! I don't want to get obsessive about food but right now seems I'm barely eating on a fd (500) then finding I'm eating much less on Nfd. I have cupboard full of crap goodies and don't seem to fancy anymore. 'Cept fast days arrrrrrgghhhh!

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 11:39

FD here but it will be a fail. Mainly because the lure of trying a pumpkin spice latte (totally missed that it made its way over here last year) is too much and I'll be near a starbucks today. I'll get a good 18hrs fasting in before then though, so I shall proclaim it a mini fast day and will be more than satisfied with that. Also, I've done soooooo much exercise this week I reckon I can get away with it Wink as naughty as that is.

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 11:41

Should add that if wasn't for fd struggles I might see this as progress :)
Should also add that I'm only 1 wk after totm so prob my easiest/happiest part of the month.
Any head tricks to help??

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 11:44

Ooh pumpkin spice latte?
Now that is worth it. Drool.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/10/2013 12:14

MissS my trick is similar. Breakfast is okay, mid-morning is hard but I remember ... BAW?...saying that once you start eating it's harder to stop, which is always true, so I push on. Past lunch it's okay to get to dinner, and it's downhill from there on in!

All of you heading into the winter months, I humbly recommend my harissa chicken and lentil soup over on the recipes page. DH and I both count this our favourite FD dinner, and it can easily be bumped up or down depending on what calories you allot for dinner. Brilliant for winter.

I actually find FD dinners easier in winter, because soup is such a good FD food. It's the NFDs that are harder - now that I'm finally getting into warm spring (mind you, I'm sitting here in my thick cardi with the heater on this evening) I want salads and sushi and piles of fresh steamed greens with fish, rather than toast and muscat. But there's nothing as good as a mug of hot tea, sipped just as it cools enough to be borne and clutched in both hands, on a cold day. And practically calorie-free!

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 12:18

Some fantastic losses here today, well done all you losers!

I am so glad I'm not the only loser suffering the cold without my usual padding.

FD today with DD off school due to teacher's strike but fasting going swimmingly well cause we're at my mum's for the day and her house is tiny, carpeted and well-insulated (unlike my big draughty Victorian with wooden floors).

Weigh-in tomorrow morning.

Fillybuster · 17/10/2013 12:26

Just catching up on the main 5:2 thread for the first time in a few months since I headed over to 'maintainers' (around thread 14 - gosh it moves fast!) and its great to see the energy and enthusiasm still going strong.

Doing 5:2 (and now maintaining on 6:1ish) has completely changed my life: my attitude to food, to myself and everything is completely different, and I love feeling good about myself again. Best of all, the weight hasn't come piling back on, which I was certain was going to happen when I stopped.

I know what you mean about feeling cold though! But I have just started the 30 Day Shred excertise plan (Bssh and Betsy - you will remember this...) - it is immensely evil, but only 20 minutes long, and I definitely feel pretty warmed up by the end of it. It made me realise that I can either sit huddled on the sofa craving carbs because I'm freezing, or force myself to get up and moving to get warmed up (even when I don't feel like it....Grin)

Good luck everyone, and stick with it...this isn't a short term miracle diet, and there will always be weeks when the scales don't budge (it took 5 weeks for me to lose my first 1lb!) but this way of eating/way of living really works for the long term :)

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 12:43

cuckoo - I also had a situation more than once that I would fancy something on FD, tell myself I could have it tomorrow and then when tomorrow came I wasn't hungry!

Currently feeling cold and hungry. Just had water all day. Stuff in the fridge that could do with eating but I am not a bin.

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 12:56

That soup sounds Delish tortoise will def give that a go. At start of last wk I made a veg chilli with kidney beans. It made 5 portions 180 cals each and slung portions in freezer. Now on fd I can add chicken and have cauli 'rice' or stick it in a pan with some stock and add something naughty like bacon/peperami/chorizo and have as chunky soup with couple of ryvitas. I think planning ahead or at least having some instant ish meals on standby helps.
Hate getting to dinner time and standing in kitchen looking blankly at fridge. That's when I'm likely to grab pk crisps for instant fix. Which never is! Unless a multipack HmmWink

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 13:09

Quite right MissS, here have some Thanks they are cal free :) (unless you eat them Wink )
Am struggling here with empty belly now. It's lunchtime and as always I find myself living against my own advice, and have nuffink in!

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 13:11

Is also becoming apparent that posting on here helps when the belly rumbles.

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 13:12

I must be bloody starving Grin Grin Grin
