Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

cuckoo you have exploded onto the thread! Fantastic advice and thanks so much for sharing your experiences of fasting Thanks.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2013 19:26

Disastrous NFD today Sad. Can a more experienced 52er suggest how best to rescue this week's plan ?

I was carb-loading and adding extra cals that I normally need for very strenuous boxing & tabata Wednesdays. Also a 100g Stevia milk choc bar transported itself into my tum Blush
All ok for a box night, but then disaster: my cold turned to fever, so I've just gone to bed.

Now I'm several hundred cals over limit for a non-training day. I might have to miss Thursday Zumba too.

I intended regular FDs Mondays & Friday, but should I bring FD2 forward to tomorrow, do you think ? Also, I prefer sub-100 cal FDs, but battling the cold I think I'll need 500 Cals. I'm downing mugs of hot herbal tea with Stevia, near 0-cal, that's ok.
Should I also add a 50% TDEE Sat or Sun to try to hit the weekly deficit target ?

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 19:27

alibaba brilliant NSV!

cuckoo somehow my appetite wasn't shrinking. Or it was but i kept sabotaging it in a bf cake frenzy.

I think I have made progress this week with Mfp. I was dreading this moment - bloomin discipline! - but its been ok. I've accepted I will be hungry on nfds too. I find that nfds when I don't overeat I enjoy my food hugely.

Today it's been 5x chocolate Leibniz, 1 small slice of cake, three milky coffees, an apple, an avocado salad, and pasta with broad beans, tomato and Parmesan. About 1900 cals.

Tomorrow I fast? Blimey if I pull it off.

eatriskier · 16/10/2013 19:29

bigchoc don't worry about fasting if you're not feeling well, or about this week's deficit. Just try to ignore the comfort feeding instinct and try to eat as healthily as possible until it rides out. Unless it makes you not hungry of course, then you may as well but don't push yourself whilst ill.

southeastdweller · 16/10/2013 19:39

BigChoc I wouldn't bother fasting however I do suggest trying some soups, homemade if you can manage it but there's plenty of nutritious ones out there in the shops if you or someone close to you can get them.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2013 19:40

eatriskier Thanks, sounds sensible. I think now the 100g choc bar was comfort eating. I'll try to avoid that danger.
Frustrating having just resumed 5:2 after maintenance pause, but I'll make sure at least not to gain.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2013 19:44

Thanks SouthEastDweller. I've massive stocks of food, including soups & 200+cal ready meals, so I'll do that.

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 19:48

bigchocfrenzy crossed posts. Wishing you well - with 100 cal fasts and all that exercise I'm sure you can afford to just let yourself recover from your lurgy.

Think I should consider bigcakefrenzy if I ever name change on this thread.

southeastdweller · 16/10/2013 19:48

That reminds me that the Yorkshire Provender soups mentioned upthread are 80p off at the moment in Waitrose and the Reece's peanut butter and chocolate sticks and cups are half price too

JB30 · 16/10/2013 19:55

Wow - this thread is flying along! Had to scroll through 4 pages since last night. Recovering my severe pains in places I didn't know I had muscles after lunge/squat/weights Davina session yesterday morning. Agony. I'll have to persevere Sad Did a 16:8 today, which I found tough, I've about 450 cals left - if I eat real soon I can say its dessert not snack Grin
FD tomorrow, looking forward to getting it out of the way - roll on Friday wine time

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2013 19:55

Thanks everyone for advice & support. Off to sleep now.

MissStrawberry · 16/10/2013 20:43

HelloSmile.

Normal day today. Enjoyed having three meals and a pudding. Apparently I need another 492 calories Shock. Could easily eat something but if I don't will it help in trying to lose more weight?

I am still confused by what my weight should be but I am not hung up on it as when I look in the mirror I like what I see compared to what I was!

wrigglebum · 16/10/2013 21:13

Just had cauliflower rice and it was delicious! Nothing like rice really, but was a great plate filler to go with my Japanese chicken katsu curry. I did it on the hob- a tiny touch of coconut oil, salt and Japanese pepper seasoning, stir it round and pop the lid on. It did still have that cauliflower smell but tasted great.

Preciousdaisybear · 16/10/2013 21:26

I bagsy bigcakefrenzy. There is a reason why DH tidies the kitchen not me. I tidied 1/4 choc cake into my tummy Halloween Blush. Thank god it's a FD tomorrow. On the plus side tried the cauliflower rice today as a trial run. Really nice and tasty, I can see it being a regular dish. Yesterday I tried slim noodles and just about puked. I have never tasted anything so vile in my life. Not tasted really as no taste but the texture was pure evil. Can't see these in my 5:2 repetoire.

PoshPaula · 16/10/2013 21:26

Thanks for the tip about Yorkshire Provender soups being on special offer southeastdweller I will visit Waitrose tomorrow. They really make fast days quite bearable!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 21:45

Bsssh Blush Grin think perhaps may have had one too many coffees earlier?! Been sitting on my hands since.

Hi MissS I would say if you fancy something and you're under then do it and enjoy! This is what life should be like with this woe. Be extra good 2 days (500 cals) then normal the other 5. Indulging when you can will stop you feeling quite so deprived when you can't. Going too hardcore increases risk of failure. When you can't sustain being strict all the time you will feel like you failed so relax when you can and just make your 5:2 days really count.

MissStrawberry · 16/10/2013 21:59

I still felt a bit hungry so DH made me some toast. Maybe not the best thing to have but I'm still well under the calories. Maybe this is part of why it works and why you should eat the right amount.

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 22:01

At the end of a fd here. Learnt tonight that if fresh chillies added to dinner turn out to be much hotter than expected it can create the effect of instantly inflating your stomach thus making you feel rather full quite quickly. Not to mention the running nose/eyes putting you off your food Shock
Top tip??? Hmm

Coveredinweetabix · 16/10/2013 22:22

cuckoo - the Ben & Jerry's peanut butter ice cream is half price in Sainsburys at the moment.
Second fast day of the week done here. I'll probably do a third on Friday as want to try & lose another 1lb by DD's birthday next week. If I can, then I will be back at the lowest level of my "normal" weight before she was born 4yrs ago. I was pleased this morning to weigh the same after a NFD as I had after the previous day's FD.

Talkinpeace · 16/10/2013 22:59

Bigchoc
I was carb-loading and adding extra cals that I normally need for very strenuous boxing & tabata Wednesdays.
Hmmmm.
Eat the calories after the exercise if you find you need them. Not before.
If you can pinch an inch around your waist, you are carrying a 5000 calorie hip-pack.
Burn that before topping up.
BUT
In the mean time get yourself feeling better as that is more important.

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 23:01

Ooh thanks CIW will head straight to sainsbugs in morning look out for it next time in town.
May well join you fri as it's a quiet wk. Get one in the bank so to speak. Having said that have really struggled at end today. Just need want chocolate. And lots of. Doesn't help knowing there is Christmas gift stockpile of choc in wardrobe. Just a key and a thin (ish) layer of wood between it and me Hmm

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 23:14

The bit I find really annoying actually - and proof of how our minds can play tricks on us is this kind of thing..
....last night was lying in bed and my thoughts went a bit like this... Hmmm fast day tmw...no cake, biccys or choc for me :( oooh yum choc! ...really fancy some choc now knowing I can't have it....hang on it's not fd yet is it?!...can get up and go get some if really want...and bics, cake anything really....Nah! don't fancy it...just stay here all warm and smug snug.
Wtf is that all about. Yet here I am now on fd ready to gnaw my own arm off!

BsshBossh · 16/10/2013 23:20

cuckoo it might be the colder weather. Certainly for me, the chill makes me crave comfort food and makes FDs harder. Generally I make it through an FD but recently (as weather has turned) they've been tougher (and I've been craving cake!).

Those of you who have lost loads of weight eg 3+ stones (Betsy, EatRiskier...) are you feeling colder than ever before? I am. I figure it's because my body hasn't adjusted to the lack of padding? I'm 33% lighter than I was last year and for the first time in decades I am not coping with the cold.

somewherebecomingrain · 17/10/2013 00:03

DP woke me up to do some work for him. I proceeded to eat at least 1000 cals in a sitting. Could so easily have slept thru. So a 2900 cal day.

FD tomorrow.

Kinda two steps forward one and three quarters steps back at the mo.

precious I can eat half a cake easy.Smile

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/10/2013 00:35

somewhere I would not have taken kindly to being woken, I hope it was really really important!!

I managed to get my out of control day back under control. Dinner was chicken in tomato sauce with a lot of salad and a little pasta. Then I fell asleep for 3 hours after putting DS2 to bed and woke up an hour ago so no evening snacking!

Kitchen needed tidying and jobs needed doing so I'm awake for now, but only having a hot squash and then back to bed in a bit. I'm definitely over TDEE for the day but not as far as I could have been.

FD tomorrow.
