The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

poshpaula
before you go to bed on a fast day, drink a whole pint of water.
When you wake up in the morning, drink another whole pint of water.
THen your system will be balanced a bit more before you start eating - dehydration is really common among fasters who are still settling into it.

eatriskier
the other trick for maintaining is to do the 24 hour fast as normal, but make the supper be nearer 800 calories than 500 ....

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 17:12

Blimey tip if I did that I'd be weeing my way through the night Grin

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 17:14

not after a fast you won't - try it .... makes both DH and I sleep better

somewherebecomingrain · 15/10/2013 17:28

poshpaula really good question which has cut to the heart of the issue.

Yes I HAVE felt ravenously hungry the day after FD. Quite obsessed like a person spying an oasis in the desert.

I initially felt a strange hunger that nothing satiated, even if my tummy was full it was like my system wasn't. It has faded and my mind has to catch up - recently I've been mindlessly eating.

I've found a bad breakfast after a fast day makes it worse. This morning post fast day I had no breakfast.

Am going to take the advice on here to stay morenhydrated.

BetsyBell · 15/10/2013 17:38

I'm going to try that TiP - I wake up very thirsty after a fast day, probably should have thought of it myself!

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 17:46

I think hydration might be the answer, as I am terrible about drinking water (I really have to force myself). I am going to fast again tomorrow and start drinking water immediately. I don't want to ruin all my efforts by eating like a person possessed the day after fasting.

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 17:53

I drink gallons during a fast day so never wake up thirsty but I may just take you up on that challenge TIP Smile

Preciousdaisybear · 15/10/2013 18:11

Thanks Helles, Melanie and Betsy. I look forward to some great dinner time ideas. Grin

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 18:15

My late night water habit actually started as a hangover prevention but it does seem to help with fasting.

NFD today : DS is cooking his fab spag bol - while listening to his music VERY loud!

FD fail. Not been shopping or planned due to being away.

Had 3 pieces of chorizo, one piece of ready done bacon, 1 home made chip. Then tuna, corn and mayo with potato wedges. Sure that is more than 500 cals???

Could think stuff it and eat but then I was starving for nothing and still have to fast!

Need to kick myself up the backside.

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 19:43

You are duly kicked!

It may well be a tad over 500, but its certainly a lot under your TDEE so is a fast day blip rather than a fail
large pint of water and tomorrow will rattle around soon.

Laska42 · 15/10/2013 19:44

New soup recipe on the recipe thread..

Where were we?

MissStrawberry · 15/10/2013 20:31

Ow!!

Roll on tomorrow...

AngieM2 · 15/10/2013 20:32

Quick question.....I'm confused.....up thread a couple of people mention 'its easier to eat nothing on FD that the 500 cals'. But go on to talk about what they eat/avoid on FD's.....am i missing something? And do some people eat say their dinner at 8pm on a monday then nothing til Wednesday?

MissStrawberry · 15/10/2013 20:34

Hassle on a thread about healthy eating??

eatriskier · 15/10/2013 20:35

Wow - what happened there. I read the thread, dished up dinner and then a comment appeared already deleted. Very fast work!

tip I wasn't sure whether I'd lose out by upping from 500 calories on fast days. I'll have that in the idea bank for if I keep dropping after I hit target.

angie I often say I find it easier to not eat, but what I mean personally is just to have most of the calories in an evening meal, so a 24hr fast. Some people, bssh and b&w for e.g. I think, just find it easier to not eat at all so go 36hrs with no food.

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 20:35

AngieM2
I suspect the gist was that its easier to totally fast - other than fluids - for 24 hours, then have the 500 calorie meal, then fast again till the following day
making 36 hours with one 500 calorie meal.

The habit of 3 meals a day is hard to break, but actually most people survive very well on two meals a day, some skip breakfast, some skip lunch
and once you start eating its easy to carry on
if you never start, fasting is easier : with a planned meal to look forward to.

MissStrawberry · 15/10/2013 20:38

I definitely find it easier to just eat once on FD as once I eat that is it. My body wants more. Obviously today I didn't do it quite right but I will try again on Thursday or Friday. Might do Friday as out in the morning so easier to not eat.

AngieM2 · 15/10/2013 20:41

Thanks TIP and eat. Didnt realise thats what it meant. Thats exactly how i've been doing it....24 hours, small meal (usually less than 300) then nothing til lunch the next day (another 16 hours)...though i did scoff/break the fast this morning with a cereal bar prior to spin and pump

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 20:47

eatriskier spammer flogging stuff - not needed here - we are our own resource.

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 20:48

Angie when I fast all day on just water and tea I find that by the time evening rolls round I'm not bothered about eating my full 500 cals - I'm simply not hungry enough. So a small soup and apple suffices - often less than 200 cals total, yet even then that's habit as yesterday's FD I actually felt no need to eat at all and could have gone the full 36 hours without food (I used to do this before the school summer holidays).

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 21:51

Hey everyone,

So I've got the book from the library and I've started reading it. I'm hoping to start fasting but I'm dreading it and worried that I won't be successful as every other thing I tried has failed.

Also another member on here said that on average people loose 1lbs per week. I understand that slow weight loss is more sustainable etc but I feel that if I had to fast two days per week and after a month only loss 4lbs I would be gutted HmmHmm
