The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Bssh- I do like free weights, and they've been good for me before. It's just opportunity really. I don't go to a gym so all my exercise is done at home. I focus on strength as I do enough cardio with the school run and looking after the boys! Plus a good strength workout should raise your heart rate anyway. I'm doing a lot of Jillian Michaels workouts, so lots of using your own body weight.

DH quite fancies some new free weights for home, so I guess I could put together a routine I could do in front of the tv. I think I'm just impatient- my body fat has come down a lot but it just all collects round my inner thighs and tummy where it looks rubbish. I'm very jealous of people who store it on their boobs or bum.

Right- DS sleeping so time for a workout!

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 11:34

wriggle I can highly recommend York dumbbells from Amazon (or Argos). You can buy them in sets of 20, 30 or 50 kg but as they are comprised of discs which you can add to and subtract, they take up very minimal room (we put ours under the sofa). I buy new 5 or 10kg discs as I need them. Makes a nice change from the gym as I can do my cardio there but my weights routine at home after my 5 yo is in bed.

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 11:41

Fantastic loss Gripping well done!

Dotty how do you roast your squash (whole in its skin or skinned and diced; and for how long)? I will be roasting my first squash tomorrow for a BBC Good food squash, feta, almond and quinoa salad (for DD and me).

BigChoc well done on the FD. I'm another who does < 500 cal FDs these days - usually 150 cals as I find that's all I need to get through a FD.

Precious another vote for BBC Good Food website - most things are already calorie counted and they have been tested thoroughly. The readers' comments per recipe are very useful too. My MFP diaries are always full of Good Food meals (I'm Bssh there if anyone wants to friend me).

GrippingArms · 15/10/2013 11:59

Thanks thank you, i've still got quite a way to go, but this is obviously 'the one' for me Grin

KnowICan · 15/10/2013 12:03

Hi all! Meet the new avatar of ThinkICan. Yes, thanks to a lovely idea proposed by Breadandwine I have rechristened myself. So now I go for the prize, no prisoners taken! And I greet all my fellow voyagers! Breadandwine Thanks

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 12:13

KnowICan - wonderful positive new name!

Right, I'm off to the gym then TiP's recommened Waitrose chorizo and pulled pork soup for my NFD lunch.

NotAsTired · 15/10/2013 12:20

Welcome all the newbies. Well done, all the losers. Smile

FD here. Struggling a bit. Cold and hungry and a bit depressed. Sad

Also, I'm very undecided about what to make for dinner tonight. I have a tiny amount of chicken breast, lots of frozen squash, tinned tomatoes but no fresh herbs but i have some chillies. Any ideas?

GrippingArms · 15/10/2013 12:22

i don't eat meat, but would roast the squash and make into a soup, then a tomatoey/chicken/chilli casserole?

lermontova · 15/10/2013 12:24

Wow - 11lbs is fantastic!

I concur with whoever was saying eating nothing is easier than just eating 500. On fast days I'm fine as long as I'm at work and busy and then I try to go to the gym on the way home so as to minimise the amount of time spent sitting around in proximity to the kitchen. I keep Covent Garden soups in the fridge and eat a carton of that for dinner on each fast day, with a banana or some fromage frais or wine or something for dessert if I have enough calories left.

On non-fast days I try not to rely on processed carbs because they just make me want more.

Breadandwine · 15/10/2013 12:31

YOOHOO KnowICan!! Flowers Flowers

Well done!

There's a lesson there for all the newcomers to 5:2 - we all of us started this WOL wondering if it would work for us.

Then before long, we know it'll work. It's all about control, and that's what this WOL gives us. Not just control over our weight, but control over our lives! Smile

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 12:57

Does anyone find that the day after a FD they are absolutely starving all day?

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 13:01

BsshBoshh I peel the whole squash, then (for soup) chop it into big chunks and toss it in 1tbsp oil and 1dessert spoon of harissa paste, then chuck it in about 160degrees oven for 45mins - 1hr, until a knife goes in easily. I love roast squash and use it all the time in things and although I know that you can leave the skin on, I don't like it that way.

I've had a very similar salad to that before and love it!

I do one that's couscous with roasted red pepper and squash (in a harissa paste!), then mix in some spinach whilst all hot so that it wilts, and stir through a heap of tinned chickpeas. Spoon over some low fat yoghurt, seasoned and mixed with crushed garlic and a good squeeze of lemon juice. It really is delicious. Could add aubergines to the pepper / squash if you like it (I don't!) Smile

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 13:02

Not really Poshpaula, I always thought I would be but I'm just averagely hungry Grin

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 13:04

It might be just me, then.

MissStrawberry · 15/10/2013 13:22

Hello all. Busy morning so only just catching up now.

FD today and I am doing rubbish. So hungry. And frozen. Had one piece of the ready cooked bacon DH bought and it wasn't very nice. Found myself going for a second piece but I asked myself why when I didn't like it. Did not have the second piece. Later I had 2 circles of something, chorizo I think, and really annoyed as supposed to be fasting. Not sure what dinner is going to be as have enough for DH and DCs but not me. Current choices aren't very good I don't think so will have another think.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/10/2013 13:23

Precious if my family were having fajitas I would havehad chicken and loads of roasted veg. These can be wrapped in a salad leaf to give you some crispiness.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 13:25

poshpaula I feel a bit weak before breakfast after a total fast, but not ravenous. I have to be mindful 12-4pm, or I just hoover up carbs without being that hungry. I try to eat a good meal, then wait 30 mins to see if I really need more. I train most evenings, which totally stops hunger on NFDs (but exhausts me on FDs)

lucyintheskywithdinos · 15/10/2013 13:30

I feel a bit hysterical if my next meal is later than average after a total fast. 24 hrs I can do fine, longer than that and I become very odd!

MelanieCheeks · 15/10/2013 13:42

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/1567814-5-2-Fast-day-recipe-ideas

Precious, a whole thread of recipes to try!

MelanieCheeks · 15/10/2013 13:43

There's a link to that recipe thread in the opening blurb, too.

KnowICan · 15/10/2013 14:14

Thank you Breadandwine and Bssh. This is the only diet that has worked for me and all you newbies will get there sooner or later.

wrigglebum · 15/10/2013 14:19

Thanks for the tip Bssh. We do have some dumbbell weights but DH left them outside so they're now a bit rusty and don't really want them back in the house!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/10/2013 14:24

Paula amazingly I don't, which really surprises me. I think the key is to stay really hydrated.

Dotty that couscous sounds amazing!

I've just had my soup for lunch, and not even finished it I was so full! Curiouser and curiouser Grin

southeastdweller · 15/10/2013 15:31

FD here going really well. Slept OK, then had a super busy morning at work, broke my fast at lunch with a milky coffee and skinny popcorn, then had the afternoon off to watch a film at the film festival. Currently supping on a skinny hot chocolate with no added cream in Starbucks. I'll have veg and pilchards for dinner and will distract myself tonight with updating my iTunes playlists and planning mini-breaks.

Well done gripping on losing almost a stone in little over a month!

BetsyBell · 15/10/2013 15:56

Busy threads this afternoon!

Welcome to velvetmoon, lovely to see all the new starters/restarters and lurkers joining in :)

I've finally learnt that a big mug of hot drink when I get in from school helps stop the 4pm snack monster. It sounds obvious I know but it's taken ages to alter my routine so first thing I automatically do is make a Brew

Preciousdaisy The recipe thread is a good one (link in the OP) for FD ideas.
