Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

wriggle I'm going to take that advice

BetsyBell · 15/10/2013 08:23

Weetabix and others - I have noticed that this WOE seems to lend itself to healthy looking slim rather than gaunt and wrinkly.

An(other) indication perhaps that it is sustained and sensible and good for our bodies...?!

A friend (who in interested in 5:2) stared at my skin and declared that I hadn't lost that subcutaneous layer of fat on my face which leads to that empty wrinkly look (though have lost many pounds of fat (50+) from elsewhere).

Remember that when you're plateauing!

Hurrah for NFDs!

BUT...I'm not hungry! Confused

Think it's going to be 16:8 today...

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 08:35

Thanks ThinkICan. Yes Betsy I too seem to have skipped the gaunt, wrinkly face look despite having lost more than 30% of my body weight. However, as I progress through BMI 22 into 21 I will keep an eye on it...

Re snacks I agree with wriggle - only by logging my NFDs in MFP was I clearly able to see just how many calories my snacking took up: more than 500 some days. A waste of calories imo and now transferred to hearty, good-sized main meals.

Two NFDs now, but as it's the working week I will be careful to stick to < TDEE. I try to only go over TDEE Friday-Sunday.

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 08:36

Wow - loads of posts overnight.

Welcome newbies to this woe/thread.

Last night's FD tandoori chicken and onion bhajis was a lovely filling meal, if not entirely nutritionally complete. Tortured DH with the smell as he only had enough calories left for some bhajis and a cup a soup.

Momentous day for my weight loss, given the maths and stats geek I am. Divide my starting weight by pi and you get the amount I have now lost. I have something special on order to celebrate that.

tip I'm still losing 1-2lb per fast. I wanted to keep fasting 2 days with a similar pattern to you (one 500 one mini) but I'm a little worried I will keep losing beyond that. I've never really had too many splurge days though, I sort of want to have something worth blowing the calories on and I rarely find that. DH reckons as I only drink 2/3 days a week now I should allow them to be "calorie free". He may have a point.

wrigglebum · 15/10/2013 09:06

You clearly need to eat some pie now to celebrate eatriskier Grin. Well done! I know what you mean about wanting something special to blow the calories on. I keep seeing the new Daim Dairy Milk, but last time I had Cadburys I didn't actually enjoy it- much too sweet. I'm now more into dark chocolate and it's hard to overindulge on that.

I'm also finding my way with maintaining. Did a proper 500 cal fast yesterday. Might do another one this week if I can fit it in- I'm not losing much on them at the moment- I'll just see how my weight goes and adjust accordingly.

I'm still working on getting the body fat down, so I'm trying to reduce carbs a bit and up my protein, especially after a workout. I've just discovered I like Quorn sausages much better than normal ones, so that's some amazing lean protein. I do eat a lot of carbs on the weekends though as we have more family meals and I like to make proper puddings with custard. It's all balance though.

BsshBossh · 15/10/2013 09:18

wriggle I can't remember if I've mentioned this to you or not but I've found heavy free weights exercises have made the biggest visible difference to my body fat levels. By heavy I don't mean heavy. I've worked up to eg 8kg for bicep curls, 10-15kg for rows and 20kg for lunges (using dumbbells) but am slowly adding to the weight especially for lower body and back work. It's stripping away my fat.

BetsyBell · 15/10/2013 09:21

eatsriskier Wow, you're still losing so much so fast! Are you near your goal? (Apologies - I'm sure you've mentioned it recently but I can't remember)

There must be a point where your intake and expenditure will balance out and you'll find your natural set point. Otherwise I suppose a good way to deal with it could be to have 1 proper fast day each week and have the other as a mini fast?

Just tried out your calculation - when I get to goal I will have lost the my start weight divided by pi too!

eats Sorry - just re-read your post 1 fast + 1 mini is what you've said also (great minds and all that Grin)

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 09:28

Got through yesterday's fast. I have gained a little since last week's fabulous low but am still not doing too badly. I'm hoping for a really good loss when I weigh in after my Thursday fast.

I'm going to try and take it steady today - am at work so shouldn't be too difficult.

I am very interested and encouraged to read all your posts!!

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 10:09

That all sounds lovely hitc (time with your sister). And well done for not going above 10st, that's still a distant dream for me as am stuck around 10st 6 having spotted 10st 4 a couple of weeks ago!

Yep, am fasting today. Got some squash roasting in the oven for a spicy squash soup for dinner tonight so it smells lovely and is making me feel hungry already Smile

Emmabryant123 · 15/10/2013 10:12

NFD here today.
Have just enjoyed toast for breakfast. One slice with marmite with other with scrambled eggs,
Hm chicken casserole with mash n veg about 4pm.
Then was thinking if I'm hungry about making a fruit salad for me and hubby later on tonight...
Ill see how I feel.
Good luck to all the fasters today.

velvetmoon · 15/10/2013 10:32

May I join?

Started the 5:2 diet earlier this year before my wedding - got a bit lax and stopped after the wedding and have put on about 10lbs since I stopped, which is a nightmare! Starting again and hopefully the weight will drop off.

Fast day today...going ok so far but I think things might get difficult after lunch :(.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 10:39

Morning all. FD1 yesterday was easy, because rest day from training. About 80 cals total from cocoa and veg juice (separately !). Btw: I avoid fruit or yoghurt (plain) on FDs as they make me ravenous - anyone else find this ? Also, eating nothing is easier for me than keeping to 500 cals.

Now shattered after v little sleep - my fridge-freezer was calling all night ! No, not hunger, it was yelling "I'm broken and I'll cost a bomb". One month after guarantee Angry. Consoled myself with 4 slices wholegrain bread with fish paste & cheese for breakfast. Must be careful this NFD.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 10:42

Grip :11 lb in 5 weeks is absolutely brilliant !

lucyintheskywithdinos · 15/10/2013 10:42

Hello velvet and the other new people!

FD here, after a very sensible NFD yesterday. I'm going to be super sensible about carbs on my weekday NFDs to boost my weight loss a bit. Just once a day I think for now, rather than with both meals.

I'm out for a run this evening, it's gorgeous here today, I'm looking forward to it!

Looking forward to the weekend, taking the DDs to the theatre then to my favourite Chinese restaurant for lunch (mmmm salt and pepper tofu).

Well done downstairs!

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 10:45

Well done gripping. So you take your boots off - that's nothing I practically take my earrings out before I weigh in...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/10/2013 10:46

Morning everyone :)

Well done on all the losses and NSVs!

FD for me here today. DH has just started a new contract (freelancer) this morning so he isn't fasting today. I've just been to Sainsbury's and bought myself two soups for today.
One for lunch which comes in at 160 cals, and another for dinner which comes in at 250 cals. Leaves me with enough for a bit of milk in tea and some raw carrot if I really need a snack. I don't usually have lunch on a FD, but I just feel that today I will need it so I am prepared!

PoshPaula · 15/10/2013 10:46

Sorry gripping I meant well done for a fantastic weight loss!

Preciousdaisybear · 15/10/2013 11:01

Can anyone recommend a FD cookbook? My ideas are limited to say the least. Dinner yesterday was steam veg with an egg which was not very inspiring as DF were tucking into fajitas with chocolate cake for pud...

Dotty342kids · 15/10/2013 11:20

precious, I use the BBC Good Food website which lists calorie content of all its recipes, so useful! Plus you can search, I think there's a section specifically for 200-400 calories Smile
Generally though I stick to things based around chicken or fish, or pulses, with tomatoey / spicy sauces. They all work well for fast days!
