Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome BigChoc! Wow, you are a gym bunny aren't you Grin. Well done on the weight loss. Stick with us! The support is great.

whimsicalname · 14/10/2013 20:25

Wow Bssh that's great! An inspiration to us all.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/10/2013 20:32

Thanks, Bssh. Your photos are really motivating. Well done, you !

somewherebecomingrain · 14/10/2013 21:04

Ok i made it. Just milky coffee and nothing else except a tiny homemade fish finger for the baby (she got four).

Oddly enough an easy fast day. I would say a breeze. Must be that half a pat of butter I ate yesterday in the form of cake.

I have a quarter of that cake still sitting on the fridge. And a gu vanilla cheesecake. Should I eat them tomorrow?

I want to say thanks to people for the encouragement - it was so helpful. I hope I can do the same for others.

poshpaula you were right I do feel good now. Hope you do to.

Good luck tomorrow's fasters.

bsssh amazing pics.

Coveredinweetabix · 14/10/2013 21:23

Wow Bssh you look completely different. I was really motivated yesterday as I saw a friend I hadn't seen for almost a year who has lost two stone by taking up running. He is a totally different shape to when I last saw him. It made me realise how much I have achieved (3 stone since Aug 2012).
Ideally, I want to lose another half stone by December as that will get me to a healthy BMI. And then in the New Year, I want to try and lost another 12lbs as that will get me down to a BMI of 23.
talkin if I squeeze, I can just get my finger and thumb to meet when they go around my wrist.

MissStrawberry · 14/10/2013 21:41

Thanks TIP. I have made a note in my phone to look at the link tomorrow. Just watching Crimewatch atm. Haven't watched it for years.

southeastdweller · 14/10/2013 21:44

rubbishfamily I can only speak about the Dr M/Mimi book which gave me a good start and provides a solid and clear outline but there's much more detail online. It's usually cheap on Amazon, print and kindle versions.

farewelltoarms Good to hear from you again.

janey You're taking to this like a duck to water...I remember your 3 or 4lb loss in your first week. Well done and to vieenrose and gripping too.

JB I've been thinking about the big event in December too...do you all think we should talk about it nearer the time, start now or should there be another thread? I'm feeling as relaxed as I've ever been around food but will be needing some advice about this one.

So who else is fasting tomorrow with me and dotty?

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 21:46

weetabix
so you are medium to heavy frame - chances are anything below BMI of 23 will start to look gaunt.

If I put my fingers round my wrist, my thumb completely covers my middle fingernail. Around my ankle I reach with my hand and then my other thumb joint completes the circle .... hence why I'm aiming for a much lower BMI than many people. I have teeny bones (that were very well covered up for many many years)

neverputasockinatoaster · 14/10/2013 21:49

Hello all.

I have started! Today was my first FD and I have had a good day.
I had porridge for breakfast, a cup of Miso soup at lunch time (44 calories and VILE! I decided I'd rather be hungry!!) and then drank green tea and water until I had homemade bol sauce served over green beans. I added a tsp of parmesan. I think I've come in at 475 calories.
Is it OK to drink diet drinks on a FD?

Also does anyone remember that once upon a time there used to be 10 calories soups? Do they still exist or did I imagine them??

southeastdweller · 14/10/2013 21:53

Welcome never and Bigchoc. never Where did you get your miso from? It's a long shot but if you're in London or Oxford I can recommend the ones from Itsu and you can add their sauces too.

zombiesheep · 14/10/2013 22:17

Hi everyone. Just checking in with a question (again). Does anyone feel as if they can't eat much on the NFDs? For example I am hungry but, say, for dinner I find that when I eat a usual portion I am overly stuffed to a point where I feel physically sick. Especially after a fast day! What is this? Is it my stomach shrinking or lack of appetite or what? Anyone else get it?

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 22:29

zombie
many of us have found that our appetites have dropped significantly - down to a much healthier level.
Saves lots of money ....

SouthEastDweller
As one of the old hands who have been fasting for over a year
last Christmas was great fun. I was in New York and stuffed my face for two weeks and put on seven pounds.
And lost them all by the third week in January as they were fluid and food not fat. Grin
19th December = 9 stone.
5th January = 9 stone 7 lb
21st January = 9 stone
any and all of you can do the same - enjoy Christmas as you have the tools to go into the season light and be light again by the end of January.

neverputasockinatoaster · 14/10/2013 22:35

SouthEastDweller - it was a paste from Itsu. It was vile!!!

Next time I shall just have a cup of bovril!!

southeastdweller · 14/10/2013 22:35

zombiesheep A few of us have that (and it's common for anyone who's been doing this a while according to the Dr M book), though I do sometimes let my head rule my body and gorge (and pay the price next day - feel like I'm dying). I see it as stomach shrinking but can't prove it.

Talkinpeace Thanks, you're right, I guess just eating what I feel like is best...it's only once a year and we're only here once Smile

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 22:39

southeast
I put on 4lb in a week on my Easter hols - and lost it in two weeks
I put on 3lb in my summer hol - and lost it in a week.
Seriously - rapid "weight gain" is not really fat and so long as you drag yourself back to fasting on the first available day its gone in a jiffy.
Which is just so cool especially for middle aged old moos like me Wink

Beebs1987 · 14/10/2013 22:42

Hi people! First time I've posted on anything like this! I'm 4 weeks in to the 5:2 and 6 months post birth with my first baby. I have that stubborn last 2st (out of 4!) to lose. Had a 7lb weight loss first 2 weeks but seem to have plataued. I'm not sure if I'm overeating on the other days. Does everyone else really eat 'whatever you like' on the other days or do you still need to kind of watch what you eat?

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 22:45

Beebs1987 welcome
We watch!
Many of us no longer need to measure - but that awareness takes several months to develop, especially for those whose BMI has ever gone over 25
but I certainly no longer snack on packs of cheshire cheese!

You need to get "whatever you like" to be within your TDEE - and it will with practice

Beebs1987 · 14/10/2013 22:53

Thanks! I thought it is probably something that you have to get used to.

I'm so happy I found this discussion as I am going it alone - OH is annoyingly slim and would never consider dieting and my friends think I'm becoming anorexic 2 days a week! So safe to say - not much support!

Coveredinweetabix · 14/10/2013 22:56

Talkin - that's really interesting. Does it mean that there really is such a thing a "big boned"? I'm only 5'4" and have never been petite. I often look at skinny people and just think that my body could never be that shape. I used to have a BMI of 23 (or lower) as a teenager & student I now realise and never looked gaunt then but it could be very different as a late 30 something. One thing I noticed with the friend I saw yesterday was how much more obvious his wrinkles were!

Zombie - the thing which holds me back from completely binging is how bloated I get if I eat too much crap, especially as its followed a couple of hours later by really bad wind.

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 23:01

Weetabix
"big boned" is usually a cover for greedy .... even a big boned person should be able to get their BMI well under 25
BUT look at thses pictures
www.theguardian.com/sport/gallery/2012/jul/06/olympic-bodies-in-pictures
we are not all the same shape ....

headintheclouds · 14/10/2013 23:44

Hi dotty I'm still here just haven't posted much lately.. My sister has been visiting for last few days so lots of catching up to do ( and eating/ drinking) she lives in Saudi so much of the catching up was in bacon sarnies & wine Grin.. After glimpsing 9 st 12 on the scales I'm back up to 10 st, but not a surprise with all the over indulging! Anyway she's gone back now so I'm back on the fasting wagon..enjoyed a good fast today and still hoping to drop 7 lbs by Dec . I do have my awards ceremony coming up .. My MIL s long weekend 70 th bash and my own 50 th birthday celebrations in Venice before then so I guess it'll be sloooow to come off...

ThinkICan · 15/10/2013 02:20

Bssh - you look amazing. Gone to slim and skipped the gaunt! You must have done it the healthy way. Keep it up and keep us posted. You are an inspiration Thanks

ThinkICan · 15/10/2013 02:23

Bssh Love the short hair. Goes with your new image!

somewherebecomingrain · 15/10/2013 06:47

beebs ime you really don't need to watch what you eat at first on NFDs. Prob because you need so many cals at the weight you are. But as you lose weight you do.

I'm trying to get my NFD eating under control after several weeks of plateauing. I'm breastfeeding and craving cake so it's hard!

wrigglebum · 15/10/2013 06:56

Hi all, just caught up on the thread. Lots of new people and lots of success stories. Hopefully the success stories will give all the newbies a boost to keep going.

Beebs- I definitely recommend tracking what you eat for a while. I found out by doing that how easy it was to stick to my TDEE as long as I don't snack and don't drink my calories. Snacks and calorific drinks can easily add an extra 500 calories a day that make the difference between flab and fab Smile. I was a major grazer before, so the fact that I don't need snacks is a revelation. I have saved so much money too, lucky since I've had to get loads of new clothes.
