Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Gripping
If your TDEE is 2400, you are getting a massive deficit on fast days.
Bring yourself up to the 500 with things like a glass of milk or a piece of fruit or some nuts - healthy snacks so you can stay feeling self righteous Wink
Then your issue will be getting your head around the non fast days and bringing them under control as the weight falls off - so that once you get to a happy weight it would never even occur to you to eat how you did in the past
(see my post at 16.37 and eatriskiers at 13.53 yesterday)

MrsFlorrick · 14/10/2013 17:28

As Talkin says. It's about your frame. You can determine your frame size by measuring around your wrist.

If you can reach index finger and thumb all the way around your wrist (and they slightly overlap, I think) then your frame is small and you would be best around 21 BMI and not over 22. At least this is what my GP said.

For me, I have a small frame so am heading towards 21 which incidentally coincides with my pre preg weight which I was all of adult life before becoming pregnant.

Am trying to fast today but so hungry. Already clocked up 700 cals with dinner still to come. I guess it's a mini fast..... FF=fast fail here. Blush

GrippingArms · 14/10/2013 17:44

thanks Talk

i'm already unable to eat up to my TDEE, i haven't consciously cut anything out, it's just my appetite has waned, i even threw half my take-way out on Friday night Shock normally i'd have left it and nibbled on the rest throughout the evening Blush

will have a spoon of creme fraiche on my chilli later then Wink

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 17:48

GrippingArms
Throwing away food that you do not feel like eating is actually a HUGE step in the right direction.
Silly thought - what is your TDEE at BMI of 25 .... make that be your normal and then you'll be already eating the 'right amount' for the new you.

GrippingArms · 14/10/2013 18:04

just done that, and it's 2000 - distinctly 'average' woman, huh? Grin

i'll bear that in mind, although i do like this WOE as i hate to be obsessed with calorie counting and having to watch everything i eat

one of the reasons i have such an unhealthy relationship with food is having grown up with an extended family who nit pick and jibe about each other's weight all the time

one of my earliest memories is of sitting in my GPs house where they discussed my aunt's new b/f, because he had sugar in his tea Hmm

ThinkICan · 14/10/2013 18:07

Oh, all you darlings! So many people have offered support I feel I could cry! Only other women, and a few rare men can understand our constant struggle with our weight issues. Gripping Arms - thanks for the run one minute plan. Can I do it in the gym, do you think? On the treadmill, perhaps? You know, in Chennai (Madras) where I live, not many women my age jog on the beach or in parks! But 5 st is tempting, lost count of how much I need to lose. Is this like interval training that Mosley was talking about too?

Dotty342kids · 14/10/2013 18:12

Hey, well done vieenrose that's fantastic! Big pat on the back for you Smile

ThinkICan · 14/10/2013 18:14

Bssh - how do I bold your names? Forgotten! You were nice enough to send me a reminder a few months back and I came on and got off rapidly again! What is powerwalk? Do I hold weights or is the treadmill on an incline? See? zero knowledge! TiP - you are so right about the eating stuff. I tend to eat anything in sight when I am stressed. Stood up to a bullying close family member and he has stopped talking for six months. So, though my health parameters are normal, my weight is not, as I try to eat lots of veggies and fruits.

GrippingArms · 14/10/2013 18:16
Smile

i didn't realise you weren't in UK, Think, but yes, you can do the running programme in the gym

the podcasts are free to download have a look here

i'm doing running outside, having the benefit of some pretty good woodland paths nearby.

being able to hide amongst the trees while i got my confidence up was a huge boost, it's been 30+ years since i ran more than a bath, but i can do this. i'm sure you can too Thanks

MissStrawberry · 14/10/2013 18:28

OMG

The woman who is listed as my height and weight looks amazing Shock but I would easily have said she weighed a lot less than she states she doesConfused.

I have lost 2 stone since July 2012 and about 1 stone since I started 5:2 and I still can't believe how easy and obvious it was. I would like to lose another stone at least.

Pasta with prawns tonight with garlic mushrooms (DH don't always follow food combo rulesGrin and fasting tomorrow.

Thanks TIP!

MrsFlorrick - my scales give me fat and water percentages so I will note them next weigh in and check the chart for whether they are as good as they should be yet.

Just tried thumb and finger around the wrist and there is a gap of 1cm between the two.

ThinkICan - to bold put before typing what you want bolded then at the end.

bold without the spaces.

KinkyDorito · 14/10/2013 18:28

Finding FD really tough today. Want to eat more than my tea - I think it's a combination of cold and tiredness (I have fibromyalgia and it's getting to me today).

I'm just been greedy and need to get a grip. But, sigh...

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 18:34

MissStrawb in that case, your BMI will very likely never go much below 23 without you looking gaunt. And yes, its amazing to look at "other people" who are the same size and realise that actually you probably look pretty OK. But nothing some toning won't improve Grin

Kinkydorito
A mug of tea is in order.

ThinkICan · 14/10/2013 18:39

Thanks Strawberry. Got it! Gripping - live in the heart of the city. So will run in spirit thru your woodland paths along with you! Am going to look at the link you have posted. Thanks all of you. I need a good kick but you have all been so helpful!

ThinkICan · 14/10/2013 18:40

So how much weight have you lost Gripping and are you there yet?

KinkyDorito · 14/10/2013 18:41

Talkin I think you are right. It's nearly tomorrow... Grin

MissStrawberry · 14/10/2013 18:49

TIP - I have tried in the past to do tummy toning exercises but when I had my youngest child I had a suspected hernia and I was told not to do anything and I didn't. I only found out later the muscles had separated and there maybe was something I could have done.

GrippingArms · 14/10/2013 18:54

i've 'only' lost 7lbs, but only been weighing/actually making a conscious effort for 4 weeks

i have around 3stone to lose ideally, but will be very happy to make it 2stone in total

i have been my 'ideal' weight, but only through illness. i know it sounds like an excuse, but i really am not healthy for me using the BMI calculator thing

Talkinpeace · 14/10/2013 18:57

www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/documents/866/Separation%20of%20the%20Abdominal%20Muscles%20after%20Childbirth.pdf
and actually ANY gentle toning exercises to close the muscles back up
if it hurts, stop
go for it ....
lots on youtube ....

janey1234 · 14/10/2013 18:59

Ooh found you all! So three weeks into this FD malarkey and not only are the FD's getting easier, but I appear to have lost 7lbs..... Smile

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 14/10/2013 19:09

Well done Janey and Gripping. To add to the scale victories, I just got back from my flu jab. Got weighed and I had lost 2lb BUT didn't take my boots off (weighed them once home, they weigh 2lbs) AND I was full -bellied so I am hopeful that when I weigh in during my fasting blood test in a few weeks, I will be even lighter :)

JB30 · 14/10/2013 19:22

Hi all. I did the dreaded Monday WI even though I know it's never good news, and I was about 2.2 up from
Friday.I think that's a bit better than other Mondays but I shall have to monitor it more. Today was an FD, nearly abandoned it but said sod it, get it out of the way. Finished at about 550.
Cannot wait for tomorrow! Really looking forward to nfd.
On the bmi subject I don't think it was invented when I was a healthy weight 20 years ago, ok I'm sure it was invented but I never heard of it so as a result I've never been conscious of being anything less than overweight. I have to lose another 17 pound to get to 25, at the rate I'm going it will be around valentines day. Please forgive me for mentioned the dreaded word, but question for the experienced - how did Christmas go? Big gain or were you all able to control it. Summer hols set me back about 6 weeks I reckon, really don't want Xmas to do the same

BsshBossh · 14/10/2013 19:46

vieenrose fab total loss. Well done to janey too.

MrsFlorrick and anyone else re frame size calculation is it the index finger or the second finger you wrap around your wrist? Because the index finger method makes me large framed (which I always thought I was until I started dropping weight). I have 1 cm gap with index finger and with second finger they only just touch.

ThinkICan my family is from India (West Bengal) but I live in the UK. I can totally see why you prefer the gym now. To powerwalk you just need to set your treadmill to a fast km/per/hr eg 6.5 and walk really fast for X minutes pumping your arms. You can also set the incline eg to 4.5 or 6.5 or even (for 5 minutes or so) 15% to really work up a sweat (keep the speed fast).

Dotty and PoshPaula thanks for the hot soups/Bovril tips - I survived my FD on hot green tea and a long trip to the gym (to get sweaty!). Did the trick :)

BigChocFrenzy · 14/10/2013 19:52

Hi all. You are such a nice supportive & knowledgeable group, so I'd like to join.
I'm age 57, 5ft 3in gym bunny. I train 90 mins x 5-6 days pw: spin, weights, boxing, Tabata, Zumba. BUT from age 50, BMI crept from 21.5 to 24.9 & my waist expanded Sad.
In March started 5:2, lost 10 lb and 2 ins waist in 12 weeks, down to BMI 23. Easily maintained with 20:4/ 16:8 - huge lunches, love my WOL Grin.
Decided to 5:2 again to achieve BMI 21.5 and 2 ins more waist loss. Today is FD1, total fast, easy so far.
Luck to all other FDers ! Frenz.

BsshBossh · 14/10/2013 20:04

Lots of new people on this thread so thought I'd re-post a before and after photo of mine. I'm currently 10 lbs lighter than my after shot but will re-take an after photo when I reach goal. 3 stones lost last year prior to 5:2 but the rest is all down to fasting and exercise.
