Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks to everyone for your kind support, and I hope everyone else is coping with fd today? How long does it take to see results? Sorry for all the questions!

BetsyBell · 15/07/2013 20:34

gilbertus It does get easier :) 620 calories is brill, well done.

Yay notastired! Love it.

nameoftherose Welcome to the threads! Very intrigued about your cult background...

Hellesbelles Sounds like a good plan! I love breakfasts too but now I really enjoy them as an occasional treat rather than a daily expectation. Not an intentional by-product of 5:2 but I've found it unexpectedly liberating.

Coming the end of a fast day. Managed a good 20 hours of zero food thanks to early Sunday eating - part of the reason I love a Monday fast! I do still find I must have a lunch, though I've noticed it's becoming smaller and more of a token thing so perhaps it'll go the way of breakfasts eventually.

Beachcomber · 15/07/2013 20:36

Thanks for the link BetsyBell lots of bargains there.

Beachcomber · 15/07/2013 20:42

Have managed FD ok. Had a vegetable stir fry for dinner with lots of crunchy green veg and beansprouts and tried to be light with the noodles. Don't really know how many calories that would be but surely not more than 500?

I probably had about two thirds of an average mug of noodles but lots of veg (onion, courgette, peppers and kale) and a couple of spoons of soy sauce. There was some home made chicken stock in there too (with fat skimmed off).

I didn't eat the rest of the day, I find it easier that way.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 15/07/2013 21:38

ok I had 50 cals left today and i had a frozen yeo valley kids yogurt tube, they are always in the freezer as healthy puddings for the kids, but tonight it was a great ice cream substitute, and only 45cals! woop woop!

BsshBossh · 15/07/2013 21:48

FD over. Well done fellow fasters. I've probably gone a bit over my 500 cals as I had a bit more fruit than usual after dinner but it could have been ice cream or chocolate so it's all fine. Will do a 16:8 tomorrow.

notsotired love the new username :)

Lizzabadger · 15/07/2013 22:17

We made it Monday fasters!

mamamoomin2 · 15/07/2013 22:27

Maccapacca, when I first started this in Jan, I did 4:3 and lost lots for about 6 weeks - ave 3lb a week. But then plateaued and struggled till now. I've also not done any fasts till today for about a month. Didn't gain tho which is good - maybe I now naturally eat less? Doesn't feel like it as still love food.

I know when I was doing well, others found it harder, and vice versa. Keep at it as there are all the other healrh benefits too.

Southeastdweller · 15/07/2013 22:42

angelabbie Have you taken the pics down already? I can't click on your profile.

I've been thinking I'm still eating a little too many carbs and sugar on my NFD's so I've decided as a compromise to have at least 90% plants and protein two days a week, which started today. I think this should help when I get to maintenance later this month. I've been actively seeking and eating more veg since starting this WOL but it's all too easy as a non-meat eater to reach for the pasta and bread when you want to fill up, especially when you're tired.

So it looks like I'm fasting tomorrow with itsaboat and Dotty - anyone else?

Tommy · 15/07/2013 22:45

I have surprised myself today but still having calories left over. I was so busy and hot t work today I didn't even have a coffee all day.
Made a Quorn curry for dinner which was about 600 cals for 4 portions so I had the "luxury" of a bit of rice with it

MelanieCheeks · 16/07/2013 06:58

Fasting today - starting off with a bit of oil-pulling (still can't get used to this, but I'm up to 10 mins)

Good zumba class last night - I hadn't been in well over a year, and the instructor said "you look great - how much weight have you lost?". Which was nice.

I'm meeting a friend for lunch at IKEA - I might just go for a black coffee, not sure any of their meals would fit a fast day plan.

HellesBelles396 · 16/07/2013 07:18

FD here too. Boiled eggs going down very nicely - much better breakfast than fruit :)

mttum · 16/07/2013 07:23

Good luck with the fast day Melanie; what is oil-pulling?

I'm not eating much at the mo, as in quite a lot of dental pain, very effective appetite reducer. Must try and get to the dentist today Sad.

Positive result though - zero cals fast yesterday and not hungry so far this morning...Smile

ceebeegeebies · 16/07/2013 07:30

Morning, this thread moves so fast!!

FD for me today...I am hoping that the nightmare of my last FD on Thursday is not going to repeat itself. Plan is a Subway chicken salad bowl for lunch then scrambled eggs and tomatoes and mushrooms for tea Smile

Anyway, just wanted to post that in about 40 weeks I will turn 40 (eek!) And have decided that I will be a size 10-12 for that. To do that I need to lose about 2.5 stone so should be doable. I wanted to write it down and share it to make it a real target iyswim Smile

Lizzabadger · 16/07/2013 07:32

NSV! The size 16 charity shop skirt I bought in desperation as none of my summer clothes fitted is now too big!

Good luck Melanie and HellesBelles. I would not be able to resist the little green cakes in Ikea.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 16/07/2013 07:33

Good luck today everyone!

Very successful fast yesterday, possibly my best yet. Didn't eat from maybe half 8 Sunday through til about 8 last night, so almost a full 24 hours. Definitely the longest I've gone. Had about 250-300 calories, had lots of sparkling water and tea during the day, but to be honest I don't count those very often! Not hungry yet, but have been having toast made from really seedy bread for breakfast this week, I've been absolutely loving it. Not something I normally eat, but it's so tasty.

Lizzabadger · 16/07/2013 07:34

And good luck ceebeegeebee.

I am trying to get back into a size 10-12 when I hit 45 at the end of September. Good idea to write down and share (though I'll feel stupid if I fail).

MelanieCheeks · 16/07/2013 07:47

Oil-pulling is (they say) a native American practice which involves swishing oil around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. (Then spitting it out). It's supposed to help remove toxins from in the mouth, and fans say they have brighter teeth, fewer mouth ulcers (the bane of my life).

I'll try anything to reduce the ulcers, but also, I bought some coconut oil from Holland and Barrett ages ago and I never use it, so I'm pulling with that in order to use it up cos I'm too tight to throw food away

HairyPotter · 16/07/2013 08:30

2nd fast day finished yesterday. It went really well, I had all the food ready portioned in the freezer and managed to come in at 454 cals (actually slightly less as I didn't finish my milk allowance.) I kept myself busy with a gigantic pile of ironing until lunch then a mani pedi after dinner.

Bestsy that's a great link, thanks. Some real bargains there. I always forget about them. I've bookmarked the page to go back to today.

Lizz Yay for skirt getting too big! I think that will be my benchmark. Before I finished work last week, my work uniform was getting too tight so I'm really hoping when I go back next week, I'll see a difference. I'll will have been on this for almost two weeks and fingers crossed, I'll still be managing couch to 5k (doing W1D2 later today) and the shred (L1D3 this morning)

No weight lost this morning, but I've still lost 2lbs since Friday. Smile

Good luck to all todays fasters!

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 08:37

Hi My pics are still there, not sure why you cannot click on them but will go and have a look. You cannot see my face in them just my very messy unmade bed lol.

NFD for me, woke up hungry for the first time after a fast day but I am doing 16/8 as well so will not eat until midday.

I too have set a goal to be a small size 12 by the time I hit 50 so I have 18months to both do that and maintain. I am hoping that once I hit my target of 10st I can maintain using 16/8 which totally suits me.

Good luck fasters today, its a hot one again.

Angel is your profile private? I can't click on it either? I think 10st is my unofficial target as well. Although right now im concentrating on going from obese to overweight! It's still a fair way away...

EagleRiderDirk · 16/07/2013 08:50

Betsy sports direct rocks. unless you happen to go to one if their jungle like shops. was actually in our local one yesterday. have to say its a combination of cram in all your goods and ignorant clientele (round this easy at least). have never managed to leave one without a full on rage going!

finally saw a loss on the scales. first time in 2 weeks. yay.

was hungry all day yesterday but made it through. starving when I woke this morning but have plenty of calories spare in today's plan for having some larger meals. will probably do me good to gave a stuff you face day, shocking the system and all that. no snacking though.

well done on all the svs and nvs. good luck those fasting today.

Gilbertus · 16/07/2013 09:07

Weighed myself this morning and weigh the same as Friday morning (official weigh day!). Two NFDs coming up and I am going to try not to pigout. I've just had a very large breakfast at about 450 cals so nothing till lunch. Feel very tired and stressed today not least because Dog 2 has hurt his leg and can't walk on it Sad. Carried him to his bed which must have burned calories as he is bloody massive!

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 09:17

Hairy I dont think so I keep having another look at it and I have ticked make my profile viewable to other mums netters.
