Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Macca, I'm new to fasting so don't know much about it but if you are getting the shakes maybe you should eat some protein?

Can you slowly eat a tin of tuna or some slices of ham or something? I think if you eat carbs the shakes will just come back later.

Gilbertus · 15/07/2013 16:17

There's protein in yoghurt too so a low fat yogurt might help you macca?

Those 10 cal jellies are DISGUSTING btw Grin

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/07/2013 16:19

Thank you, just had a little cottage cheese and feeling more human. I dread to think how many calories I've been mindlessly consuming Hmm

QueenBoudicea · 15/07/2013 16:20

peplum I'm hanging on in there!

FD going well so far. Water only all day - have a king prawn salad planned for late lunch/early dinner which is about 200 cals. The last fd I ate so late I wasn't particularly hungry in the evening so thought I'd try the same approach today.

I'm tempted to try 4/3 if the weight doesn't start to move. My bmi is 24 so just on the healthy zone but I'd like to get it to 22.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/07/2013 16:21

Before today I mean! Mfp puts today at 200 calories so far.

BetsyBell · 15/07/2013 16:37

Eagle beachcomber I feel your pain, I've gone for shorts style bikini bottoms (stretched tummy skin hidden, less lady maintenance required) and underwired top. I'm pretty sure it exaggerates the worst bit of my pear shaped bod but at least everything's tucked in and perked up!

There's not many sizes left but there's some good bargains to be had from sportsdirect and they deliver fast. I know it's not ideal not being able to try them on but it's so awful trying on swimwear that I'd rather just get it this way!

BetsyBell · 15/07/2013 16:43

macca glad you're feeling better, bit of protein is definitely the way to go. I favour a boiled egg wrapped with a bit of wafer thin ham! Or a bit of fruit - I don't find it spikes my blood sugar but others may react differently.

Fast day here. I really need to get up and drink a pint of water...

Hello all. Just a quick question...some posters have been saying '2 skim coffees = 140 cals' and 'an apple, a miso soup and 2 teas = 211 cals'.

Am I being naive but how does 2 coffees with (I assume) a dash of skimmed milk equate to 70 cals a cup? Same goes for an apple (say, 70 cals), a miso soup (say 50 cals) and 2 teas - maybe 15-25 cals a mug with a dash of milk?

Or have I got that wrong?

angelabbie · 15/07/2013 16:53

fast day for me after a pretty sensible weekend with lots of salad and ryvita along side burger and sausage from the barbie.

I have just added a before and after pic on my profile if anyone would like to take a look. I am just going into my sixth week and down 10lbs. Just showed them to my hubby and he said, wow did not realise you had let yourself that much (bloody cheek ) although he did say it was an amazing difference lol.

Today have had a subway turkey and ham roll at 3pm and a miso soup with chicken tonight from cook.

Talkinpeace · 15/07/2013 16:54

coffee : if you make it yourself, the milk in a decent cup is not many calories, but bought ones are always assumed to be higher for safety sake
an apple is around 100 calories

I allow 100 calories a day for milk in my tea
but try not to eat at all till supper on (unbroken) fast days

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 16:56

mrsarch depends totally on what sort of coffee and milk and how much a dash is. I have a tassimo and a coffee for me with 2 teaspoons of almond milk is only about 2 calories. A cup of the coffee my mum uses is 2 cals a spoon, plus whatever milk they add (15cals a cup worse case) I add all my ingredients separately though.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 15/07/2013 17:27

FD today and planning family supper using new kitchen gadget a Spiralizer to make courgette noodles!

Lizzabadger · 15/07/2013 17:32

Seventh fast day nearly done. Just got to get through my exercise class without passing out in the heat.

No idea if I weigh less but my clothes fit a bit better.

I'm finding I don't really want to eat on my NFDs but I force myself (so that I am not too hungry to get through the FDs) and then I feel bloated and horrible. Not sure what the answer is. Maybe the heat's the problem.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 15/07/2013 17:36

It's 11.30am here and I skipped breakfast, have decided to consider having today FD instead of doing Tues/Thurs (planned this way originally so I cold drink on Fri, Sat and Sunday nights then abstain rest of week as don't like to drink day before fast days).

Had a scrambled egg with smoked salmon for early lunch and idea is I won't eat again until 7.30pm when I will have some soup.

If it feels too hard today I will eat something extra and fast tomorrow instead. I must say I'm very impressed with how my appetite has changed after just a week. I couldn't finish my steak last night and only ate half, didn't want potatoes and just had asparagus and mushrooms with it. Couldn't finish them either.

Scales indicate I'm between 3-4 lbs down. Trousers which were too tight a week ago now fit.

:)

mamamoomin2 · 15/07/2013 18:16

Thanks for words. Well at least my job is also busy as well as slightly stressful! First FD is a while was fine. Held off till now and about to have some chicken and the beetroot and celeriac salad. No smoking either...there was another mistake in previous post 1.5 years! Not months which makes it all the.more stupid!

Motivation has returned! Keep going everyone else too :)

BsshBossh · 15/07/2013 18:21

FD nearly went pear-shaped mid-afternoon but I had a big mug of black coffee and now feel revived. Homemade chicken noodle soup for FD dinner tonight. Can't wait!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/07/2013 18:37

So, today I have eaten a rice cake and slim a soup for lunch, 100g of cottage cheese and apple and parsnip soup with 2 ryvitas for dinner. And a satsuma. 533 calories all in.

I'm hoping this is it for today, as really didn't want to exceed calories but needed 3 teas to keep going and forgot about the milk!

Does this sound like a good meal plan for the day? Was wandering around the shops looking for low cal meals and clearly found the soup aisle. I usually eat my lunch in the car as out on visits (community OTA).

SoTiredAgain · 15/07/2013 18:45

Fast day nearly over. Have had dinner and chocolate but I still have plenty of calories left. Maybe I will have strawberries later or maybe I won't. Smile

Well done everyone else on their fd.

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 18:55

About an hour away from dinner. Soooooo hungry.

Sadly I can't make it any earlier as I've got to get the kids to bed. Meh.

Gonna be lush when its done though.

HellesBelles396 · 15/07/2013 19:31

Loving planning my FD menu the evening before. Doing it straight after my evening meal means that I make good food choices because I'm not hungry.

Going for two boiled eggs for breakfast (which worked well for yesterday's fast day) rather than fruit which did not go well last week as I was ravenous within hours.

I gather a lot of you don't eat breakfast on FD's but I really enjoy breakfast.

NameoftheRose · 15/07/2013 19:50

Second FD tomorrow. Although my jeans are feeling looser already. Could be wishful thinking...
Tonight's dinner was baked chicken breast. The dog got the skin, first time ever as I always justified scoffing it before. Heaps of roast vegetables. Decided I wanted some good protein the day before fasting.
OH asked for Steak Pie for dinner. I haven't baked a steak pie for so many years I'd forgotten how. This is what comes of saying "What do you fancy for dinner tonight?" A question I probably won't ask again in a hurry. Usually we eat the same thing but I just didn't fancy pastry. Too darn hot.

Not dreading the FD, after my 'hard core fasting' of previous years, this doesn't seem too bad. I hope...

Gilbertus · 15/07/2013 19:53

I've not managed 500cals today - 620cals Sad found it very tough

NameoftheRose · 15/07/2013 19:55

620 cals still probably very good, compared to an average day.

NotAsTired · 15/07/2013 20:11

Yes, it's me (SoTiredAgain) Grin

I think it was peplum who told me when I first started posting that my name reminded her of how she used to feel and that it would not take long to feel more energised. Well, I definitely have more energy (amongst a whole host of other positives) and I wanted it to reflect the change in my name. Smile

(Still get very tired just before totm but I am discounting that!)

Itsaboatjack · 15/07/2013 20:22

HellesBelles I totally agree with you about enjoying food more. Especially the 'treat' food; it's so much nicer without the side order of guilt.
