IF, 4:3, 5:2 - Maintaining a healthy weight - Chapter 2

This thread is for those who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while and are now at or nearing their target healthy weight. It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?

How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?

Several of us have been stable at our goal weight for a few months, now, and others are joining all the time. Obviously, the more the merrier! Grin

Here is the current main thread for posters practicing IF to lose weight.

There are two other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these! Grin

((((Filly))))
A really important thing to remember about my ability to focus : I have badly damaged knee joints. Every poind I put on is an extra day a year I cannot walk comfortably. When I was 12 stone, I was incapacitated for a month a year. Pain is a great teacher.
THat and I'm well along the psychotic scale and an auditor!!

Anglaise1 · 01/06/2013 07:38

TIP how long have you been on maintenance?
I like to weigh in daily to keep a track of things and set my fasting according to that. If I don't have to do 2 fasts a week I prefer it! I still have bowel issues, even with one fast a week Shock

Talkinpeace · 01/06/2013 11:51

I hit target weight at the end of term before Christmas.
I do not own a set of scales and only weigh myself on a Friday morning after my swim and before yoga, so if, like this week, I miss yoga I only weigh myself once a week at most Grin

postmanpatscat · 01/06/2013 13:26

I met target a month ago (and have lost 3lbs since!) and prior to that I weighed myself every single day from the first day I started 5:2 back in Feb half term. I have now retrained myself to weigh less often, usually I fast once, sometimes twice, per week and only weigh after a fast. I have only once weighed myself and been above my goal weight but am usually considerably under. I will admit to being tempted to lose 200g more to make a nice round 10kg loss!

Talkinpeace · 01/06/2013 19:31

OK, I ate too much today : grazing for the first time in ages, but in my defence I did have 23 teenagers here for DDs party for 7 hours
and they were wonderful.

BsshBossh · 02/06/2013 07:41

Happy birthday (I'm assuming) to your DD TiP.

I grazed all day yesterday too, was overstuffed and ended up with a terrible tummy. It's obvious to me after 2 successful weeks of combining fasting with NoS that not snacking suits me perfectly.

Talkinpeace · 02/06/2013 19:54

:-)
Her birthday is on Wednesday but DH is away during the week at the Cheltenham Science Festival so we did the party this weekend and it was excellent : ukeleles and bongos and guitars and tree climbing and swingball ..... all recorded on iphones!.
I'm booked to work 55 hours next week so am relaxing today
but REALLY looking forward to fasting and the gym soon

mumofcrazynamedkids · 03/06/2013 15:33

Hey all, Off Topic Alert well at the eleventh hour disaster struck, on Thursday (8 days before my expected move date) the buyer pulled out!

i'm trying to keep things is perspective, although feeling pretty glum, quickly passed the angry stage on thurs/fri, to tears sat and sun, and today trying to just move onwards and upwards.

so fasting today, to get one thing back under control, as I have seriously been bingeing on carbs, gin and wine Blush

good luck to americas ooohh really thinking of you on that long ride, really hope you enjoy it and have the biggest endorphin rush afterwards!

Fillly thanks for your congrats on me keeping my job, now thankfullly my boss agreed to let me rescind my resignation and we're back to square one! had a look at your photo's and they look brilliant! you don't need any tips from me! I just did a pirate ship for my son pirate's 5th birthday party yesterday (his demand for pirates not me) and for my Daughters 7th recently I did a fairy garden which was pretty easy, rectangular base, covered in green fondant. with a pond make from piping gel and a 3d tree with lots of plastic fairies. I'll try and work out how to attach a photo and if you want any tips let me know. usually though the kids look through the party cake books, then they decide to go on you tube or google images and expand on the idea, and I just have to work out how to create, it's all in the planning really, the construction is the fun bit.

hope we all have a good week of salads ahead in the sunshine!

frenchfancy · 03/06/2013 16:26

Oh no Mumof I don't believe it. Why do people do that? The sooner England moves to a more sensible way of buying and selling houses the better. In France you exchange contracts one week after the offer is accepted, then the contract is binding. Far more sensible.

I've just harvested the first crop of strawberries from the garden. 1.25kg :) I'm fasting today so I haven't tasted them yet (I know strawberries aren't many calories but I also know from experience it will make me uncomfortably hungry) but they smell divine. I shall look forward to breakfast.

I have now come to the conclusion to how I put on the weight in the first place, it is called Saturday night. I fasted this Saturday until the evening, then ate (and drank) normally. Actually not really normally as I only had 3 small glasses of wine and it would have been much more previously, I only had a small main and although 3 desserts were on offer I only had one. I still managed to consume over 2000 cals though Shock

GreenEggsAndNichts · 03/06/2013 17:33

mumofcrazy I'm sorry to hear that! Agree with FF that both buyers and sellers in England could use a bit more protection from this kind of behaviour.

I've been absent, in Paris for 5 days then had a wedding to attend once I got back to the UK. I won't even pretend like I fasted on that Paris trip, though I did manage one between the trip and the wedding.

I've also picked up a FitBit, essentially a fancy pedometer, to help inspire me to walk more. I used to have a cheap one but it would only work if I was wearing a specific sort of clothing, or it wouldn't register the steps. anyway. I'm enjoying the new toy so far.

Anyway, need to get used to walking loads because Glastonbury is coming, and I'll be there as a volunteer so I'll be on my feet a LOT. Looking forward to it. I think!

BsshBossh · 03/06/2013 18:00

Oh no mumof how awful!

Fasting today. All fine except for the big bags of ripe nectarines and flat peaches I bought at the greengrocer today - pure temptation especially when DD tucked into them after her dinner but I haven't resisted yet. Roll on dinner time. DH is making a puy lentil, feta and merguez sausage stew - am sure it will be over 500 cals but since yesterday's dinner was simply a heavenly bowl of asparagus, broad beans and peas drizzled over with lemon juice, I'm not unduly bothered!

frenchfancy · 03/06/2013 18:11

Oh I love flat peaches.

BsshBossh · 03/06/2013 18:26

?haven't resisted? I meant have resisted

Laska42 · 03/06/2013 20:39

Oh MOCNK that is so shite. I hope you find someone else soon.. but at least you still have the job

We've had a birthday weekend (my son's and he came over for a meal) , so there's been a bit of luscious fruit and ice cream around here also - strawberries , raspberries blueberries - FF so I know what you mean,. I've not tried a flat peach though as actually I often find that peaches be a bit disappointing .( except when eaten abroad). You do get some lush ones in Greece (and also cherries ) where we go as they seem to grow them around there .

However i've not been too bad this weekend , but am fighting a Chilli Dorito urge right now , so though I'd post about it instead !!

BACK OFF EVIL CHILLI DORITOS (oh why is there a packet left over from the weekend? )

Talkinpeace · 03/06/2013 20:48

((MOCNK)) house moving is just horrible.

Laska42 · 03/06/2013 21:25

ok... I just ate half a packet of beetroot in chilli.. that seemed to work.. (may regret it in the morning though Wink)

AmericasTorturedBrow · 04/06/2013 05:56

Just quickly checking in on day two of my ride to let you all know I am merrily consuming vast quantities of food but prob burnt off about 5000 kcal today....and Cyclistist, I am now aware of just how much butt butter is desperately needed!

Oh, and Thankyou so very much to those who donated, I collected a whopping $5000 and the ride as whole broke its record with $14.2million!!!

BsshBossh · 04/06/2013 09:25

Well done ATB and keep going. We're rooting you on via the internet Smile

Piebaldrider · 04/06/2013 20:17

WineGrin WineGrin WineGrin as she smuggly walks down the office after weighing in at the gym.
After much putting it off i finaly managed to get back on the wagon and fasted two days last week and again today. None of it was difficult and it felt great to be back in control. Its been several weeks and more since i last fasted but i havnt really gained more than 2-3 pounds which amazed me .

Now weighing yourself on the morning after a fast day means your going to be lighter and the first week your going to loose fluid more than fat. All that to one side i weighed in at 2 kilos less than a week ago and that blew me away and it has motivated me to keep it going . Im aiming to get back to 4.3 this week so fingerss crossed.

Today is not a fast day and the quetion i ask myself is dare i weigh myself tomorrow...............................................

mumofcrazynamedkids · 05/06/2013 11:12

thanks for all your sympathy, much appreciated Flowers

have gained 3 pounds in my recent misery/carb loading, but I signed up new agents yesterday, negotiated better rate, images taken, house cleaned and ready for marketing again and I am feeling more positive....(the market has risen again....bloody crazy london prices)

so a fast day today....mondays went out of the window with home made bread and butter to go with my low cal soup, and then once I started I couldn't stop Blush

well done americas hope your bum survives! your fundraising sounds brilliant!

piebald well done on getting back on the wagon, it's alwasy tricksy, but what an incentive!

am feelingtempted by the fruit thing with all your mentions, maybe my fast days could be fruit days, or will the sugar make me crave more food?

I might make a big fruit salad for lunch and a tuna sald for supper.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 05/06/2013 11:40

oohh I finally managed to upload some cake pics (i am strictly an amateur btw, but love an excuse to create a fun cake), and one of me, just so you can put a face to the name.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 05/06/2013 13:56

greeneggs Paris sounds lovely, was it a romantic break? and how is the fitbit? I quite fancy one, like you I used to use a real small cheapo pedometer that i loved, but it wasn't very reliable.

but I don't do iphone, I 'm a blackberry girl, so not sure what pedometers with added features will work with that, anyone?

Anglaise1 · 05/06/2013 14:25

I've just discovered that my BF has had a secret life for most of the time I've been with him and thanks to that I'm now losing again and am nearly underweight with my 18.5 BMI Sad

BsshBossh · 05/06/2013 14:32

Oh no Anglaise1 Sad Flowers

Anglaise1 · 05/06/2013 15:07

Ah, thanks BsshBosshMaybe it's one reason to keep a BMI of around 20, just so you have some in reserve for emotional upsets as well as illness. He has been in a 'distance' largely sexual relationship with someone. He stupidly left his FB page open and I saw the mostly explicit messages. To add insult to injury she is a dog if her profile FB photos are anything to go by. And you always put your best photo on a FB profile!
