Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

Thank you @doesanybodyhaveamap

Wigeon · 08/01/2025 16:35

Another quick Q - do they ask things like: why have you chosen this song (for the singing audition), why do you want to do NYMT, what do you think you would bring to a NYMT company etc etc? So sort of interview questions? Or not?

And I assume that throughout the day they are also judging whether someone responds well to notes, gets on with other people, is supportive of other people, isn't disheartened if something goes wrong /they can't do something (eg complex dance steps!) etc. As well as assessing talent in singing/acting /dancing of course. Is that right do you think?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 08/01/2025 17:29

@Wigeon DC has been asked to introduce themselves and something interesting about them, what their favourite show is, why they want to do NYMT. But that's about it. No 'interview' as such, just to get them talking and set them at ease.

Everything you say about responding to feedback/direction, team work, resilience etc is absolutely spot on.

Can anyone’s DC who auditioned for NYMT this weekend shed some light over the new drama element? My DC is unsure whether they should pick one of the pieces to learn/ whether they work on the pieces as a group/ get asked to read a specific piece/ get randomly allocated a piece? What format did the drama class take? Many thanks! Can’t believe this is all rolled around again so quickly…..

Hi there- first time for my dd this weekend so she has nothing to compare it to but she described to my ds and he says just similar to last year. They were put in groups and worked one of the pieces. Then they got to choose which other piece they did with a partner. It was the part of the day she was nervous for but she said it was fun and relaxed.

So when my YP signed uo for BYMT they got an email asking to let BYMT know if they are available for the Easter show which is 12-27th April. Aren't schools back by then?

They may be hoping you would let the DC miss a few days. We go back on 23rd so you'd probably only miss 3 days. No good for exam year groups but otherwise maybe OK? If you're not keen, maybe just say not available. NYMT Easter residentials would all fall within state school Easter holidays unless you live in an area with a semester system, in which case you might need to check...

Truetoself · 08/01/2025 23:01

I will give them a call tomorrow. I would have expected residentials to take place during school holidays. State schools return on 20th in my area

But that's Easter Sunday!

Truetoself · 08/01/2025 23:07

I think I checked wrong year. We also return on 23rd but isn't it unusual to expect YP to miss school?

Biscuitsneeded · 08/01/2025 23:12

I think it's the kind of thing schools.can authorise as educational if it's not excessive. My DS has done occasional performances at important and prestigious events through NYMT and has been authorised to miss college to do so if it was a matter of a day or two. NYMT wouldn't schedule residentials or major productions in termtime but I know BYMT do occasionally. They often have a show that starts rehearsing early in July which is fine for Scottish participants and kids at private schools but not great for others.. But of course you can decline a place and perhaps hope to be offered something with more suitable dates.

Comefromaway · 08/01/2025 23:23

It would have to be a condition of the performance licence. The school can’t actually legally say no without a very good reason (such as exams). It’s up to the education welfare officer.

The first year Ds did NYMT the Easter residential was actually in term time for him. He was 18 & at college & his Btec course required so many hours of work experience so it was classed as that for him.

Operasingerkath · 09/01/2025 08:07

I’m sure there wouldn’t be a problem with authorised absence for this. This is one of those times where different areas have varying holidays. My DS goes to college in a different council area, and they don’t go back until 28th April, but the area we live go back on 22nd!

Truetoself · 09/01/2025 11:26

You are all right - as it's considered an educational activity, it is expected that schools would allow this (I called BYMT this morning). And to be honest BYMT summer dates are not yet confirmed so it is better to donthe Easter Production for us anyway (if YP gets through)

That's good. Are you still going to have a go at NYMT too? Your.DC would probably really enjoy the audition day even if you can't make recalls - do talk to NYMT in case they would accept a self tape if your DD is recalled.

Truetoself · 09/01/2025 13:44

@Biscuitsneeded yes YP will still be doing NYMT auditions because as you said, she will enjoy the process. I have filled the online contact form as well as emailed them using enquiries@ but have not heard back.

YP will be so disappointed if she is called for a recall and can't attend :(
We had booked the trip prior to the dates coming out and to be honest I thought YP is now old enough to do her own research

DMEAmum · 09/01/2025 15:51

audition results from Saturday/Bristol are out…

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/01/2025 15:59

Yeh. Skills course here. Rather gutted. DC doesn't know yet.

TheOliveSwan · 09/01/2025 16:25

@doesanybodyhaveamap sorry to hear that. Are you doing BYMT auditions too?

We have a recall for 2 shows. DD is thrilled 😁
Does anyone know what the chances are of getting a show once you have been invited to the casting workshops?

We have found teenagers very bad at reading anything in any detail. 😆

Are you away for the whole of half term? They might be able to make sure that if recalled she got a Saturday recall and you could go after that? Or does it involve foreign travel and flights etc?

Congratulations @TheOliveSwan or rather your DD. I honestly have no idea. I assume they will also be casting the workshops from the recalls unless they are recalling separately for those. Two recalls is great news though. Your Dd should definitely feel proud, and go to the recalls feeling confident. Can you say which shows?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/01/2025 16:30

@TheOliveSwan no, they won't do BYMT after a bad experience a few years back.

Still in the running as a musician though, we won't find out about that until March.

Truetoself · 09/01/2025 16:53

@doesanybodyhaveamap sorry you are gutted with the outcome.
Do you mind sharing what your bad experience at BYMT was?

Truetoself · 09/01/2025 16:54

@Biscuitsneeded no - just for the exact dates of the recall! Couldn't make it up!

TheOliveSwan · 09/01/2025 16:56

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded it’s Tuck everlasting and Carousel. I think her group was told at auditions that those would possibly be the most likely shows for their age group. Although I think she was kind of hoping for lightning boy because she’s a Greek mythology nerd.
