Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

Sorry to hear she'll be disappointed @Comefromaway, and well done to your DC @TheOliveSwan.
My DS has been recalled for Lightning Boy and Tuck Everlasting, so is thrilled. I'm not so thrilled that our train services to London have been cancelled with rail replacement buses that weekend 😭

Truetoself · 09/01/2025 16:53

@doesanybodyhaveamap sorry you are gutted with the outcome.
Do you mind sharing what your bad experience at BYMT was?

I've sent you a private message

Congratulations to your DS! Great news..Did you notice there are 4 days for the recalls this year? If the trains are down at the weekend, might they be back on again for the Monday or Tuesday, or were they not presented an option?

sleepisoverrated1 · 09/01/2025 17:53

We weren't given a choice @Biscuitsneeded. In any case, DS is at school the following week; our half term isn't until the beginning of March!

Wigeon · 09/01/2025 18:13

Biscuitsneeded · 09/01/2025 16:30

Congratulations @TheOliveSwan or rather your DD. I honestly have no idea. I assume they will also be casting the workshops from the recalls unless they are recalling separately for those. Two recalls is great news though. Your Dd should definitely feel proud, and go to the recalls feeling confident. Can you say which shows?

@TheOliveSwan - I'm sure I read on their website or emails or possibly Instagram that everyone who gets invited to a casting workshop is definitely in a show - they are just deciding on the parts. I'll try to track down where I saw that. So many congratulations to your DD, fantastic news!

That sounds horrendous. Poor teachers!!

If the recalls are at Arts Ed I gather it was relatively easy to park around there last time if that's at all option.

I say this with no authority but I think it's more likely anyone with a recall will either get a show or a new musical workshop. Both great outcomes, but a recall probably doesn't mean definitely one of the 4 fully produced shows.

boysmuminherts · 09/01/2025 19:03

oops just checked the shows for this year and realised we are on holiday at Easter for the training so my son can't take part.

Although @sleepisoverrated1 says that her DS has been recalled for Tuck Everlasting and Lightening Boy, so that sounds like it is for one of the shows rather than a new musicals workshop?

I can't find a mention on their website of everyone who gets recalled to a casting workshop is definitely in a show, so I'm wondering if I heard it in this recent NYMT Q&A about auditions on Instagram: www.instagram.com/reel/DEIX_UDoUjx/?igsh=MzR0dHc4Mjl2NHI0

TheOliveSwan · 09/01/2025 19:20

@Wigeon I hope that’s right because that would be amazing but don’t want to get any hopes up!
DD did say that that was what they were told at the auditions, that if you get invited for a recall then you will definitely be in a show, they are just working out exactly where to put you. However, that doesn’t seem quite right to me because they wouldn’t be able to offer many recalls then would they? And what if loads of super talented kids turn up to the last couple of audition dates but they’ve already filled all the spots? How many young people are generally in each cast?

Yes, I would think this would be right. That’s what happened last year anyway. My DS had recalls for 2 full shows but was cast in a workshop (amazing experience btw, he absolutely loved it).

Congratulations to the successes and commiserations for any disappointments so far.

In terms of trains, they always have engineering works that weekend! It’s a nightmare for us getting into London on a Sunday morning anyway but the works really don’t help! We had to drive down last year. I did ask about changing recall days last year and they said to ask and they would accommodate if possible. I think previously you could choose which session you wanted.

The 2 recalls mean that @sleepisoverrated1 's DS will attend recalls for both of the named productions and be auditioned by the creative team for each of those shows. If ultimately he doesn't get placed in either of those shows, he will most likely be cast in a new musical workshop. They have several of those to cast and as far as we know nobody has received a recall invitation specifically for those (unless they're just not reading Mumsnet!) so I'm fairly sure they will recall more people than they need for the four produced shows, and if you're recalled but not cast in those you will get cast in a workshop. As @Operasingerkath says, with her DS having experienced both, these are really worth doing too, but I don't think a recall automatically means you will get one of the four named shows. It is is a big achievement though, so well done to the DC of @TheOliveSwan and @sleepisoverrated1 .

I think they mean a show or a workshop..

Yes that is what we have just deduced they probably meant. Very exciting!
I’m going to have to go and read up on everything more, I didn’t really pay much attention until now because I didn’t really think she would get a recall tbh 🙈 bad mother maybe but I just thought the odds weren’t in our favour.

Haha that's what happened when my DS first went along to auditions. 9 years later, here I still am and he's in Platform. Feel free to ask any Qs.

Mcmumager · 09/01/2025 20:39

Congratulations to the recalls- fab news. I’ve got a disappointed dd. She really wanted to be a kid from fame but not this time.

Hope she's OK @Mcmumager. It's so hard, especially when you loved the audition. I hope she'll bounce back and try again another time..

doesanybodyhaveamap · 09/01/2025 21:10

Sorry guys, in my disappointment and concern for DC earlier I don't think I congratulated those with recalls! They've al done super well, the standard is super high always.

Hoping your DD spring back quickly @Mcmumager - I'm sure they've got exciting things to look forward to.

Over here, my DC has actually taken it well. They are still hopeful of a musician place on a show so fingers crossed for that.

We are now moving our focus on to Saturdays recall for drama school 😬

Operasingerkath · 09/01/2025 21:19

Thinking of you and your DC @Mcmumager @doesanybodyhaveamap , it’s so hard! Good luck with the drama school recall

Mumster40 · 10/01/2025 07:19

Congratulations to those with recalls and commiserations to those DC who are disappointed this time. I know how hard that is and my heart goes out to your DC. My DC has auditioned twice. First year they were cast in a show and the second year they were offered an advanced residential workshop. Last year when they were recalled the email stated that they were recalled for ‘one of the new musical workshops.’ This was apparently a new twist to the recalls. My niece was also recalled last year for a show and ended up being offered a workshop. I’m not sure if that’s helpful but that was last year’s experience for us! It’s certainly a rollercoaster…….x

ZooKeeper123 · 10/01/2025 07:20

Congratulations to the recalls and hugs to those feeling disappointed ☹️ xxx

Biscuitsneeded · 10/01/2025 09:50

Morning! I hope everyone is OK today, now that the dust has settled. I think the stories on here show the importance of realising that not getting recalled certainly doesn't mean that a DC is not talented. It's just that with so many auditioning (and it really sounds like a LOT this year!) and necessarily limited recall slots, they probably have to be very discerning regarding suitability for the specific shows. It's so common with NYMT that one talented individual can have experiences over different years that range from no recall through to lead role. Sometimes people don't get in the first time and then go from ensemble to lead role over a few years. It's much harder when you get a show one year and then the next year you don't, but kids change a lot as they grow up and may be perfect for something one year and not so much the next. If they have the resilience to come back the following year they may well be rewarded. Hugs to the disappointed DC, and congratulations to those with good news so far.

TheOliveSwan · 10/01/2025 10:01

Our feet have landed back on the ground 😅 DD is just absolutely thrilled to be able to go back and do another full day with the fabulous NYMT people. She honestly had such a good time at the audition day, if the skills workshops are anything like that then I don’t think she’d be disappointed to get one of those because it means still working with them, learning and having fun!
She’s really hoping to see some of her friends from the Bristol audition at the recall day as well 🤞🏻
(and singing good girl Winnie foster on repeat 🙄😅) I just love her enthusiasm.

yodaforpresident · 10/01/2025 10:34

It's always such a torrent of emotion when the auditon responses start coming in - exciting and also sad for those that have not had the news that they wanted this time. Congratulations to all the DC for having the courage to put themselves out there.
