Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

I think Fame is the only show that probably won't have room in the ensemble for a couple of younger ones, alongside any named younger characters. All you can really do is encourage the DC to have a lovely time and be supportive to other recallees. (I do think the teams pick up on who will make a good company member in the process of doing the recalls!) As you've all correctly said, going to recalls is in itself an exciting and notable achievement, and DC usually really enjoy them once any nerves dissipate. And Chiswick is full of nice cafes for parents to while away the hours while you wait - head back toward the High Street and enjoy spotting other NYMT parents doing the same thing!

Truetoself · 14/02/2025 17:45

@Lionelblair are we likely to hear about the outcomes on the NYMT recalls by the 19th? Which is the deadline for accepting any BYMT offers?

sleepisoverrated1 · 14/02/2025 17:47

Thanks @Mcmumager and @Biscuitsneeded. Unfortunately it has to be tomorrow; got trains and accommodation booked (we're en route now) and he's still at school next week. What will be will be, and it's a good experience nonetheless.

Break a leg to him. Hope he gets a good night's sleep and wakes up refreshed and ready to dazzle. I'm sure he will do well.

Good luck to everyone! My DC is in on Monday and my niece on Tuesday. DC also has a cold so keeping everything crossed it clears up in time……x

Fingers crossed your DC is back on form for Monday. A lot can change in 2 days... Break a leg!

Lionelblair · 14/02/2025 19:31

Hi @Truetoself my DS’s offer letter has deadline of 28th Feb. Is yours for an Easter show perhaps? I’m hoping we hear from nymt by w/c 24th.

Just dipping into this. Not a regular mumsnet user, but we received fantastic advice and support from this thread last year when our daughter first auditioned for BYMT and was lucky enough to get into a show.

She auditioned again last Saturday and has just received (yesterday) news that she is cast in another show this summer. She's thrilled..!

She has remained in contacted with a number of the cast from her show last year - When We Strike - and has heard this week from a several who have been cast in various of the BYMT shows this year. I don't know if they're moving faster this year as I don't recall hearing quite so soon last year (but that was c.12 months ago!). We had been contacted recently about Easter availability but as she has some GCSEs this summer (year 10 - English Lit is early for her) we opted to focus on revision.

Good luck to all the auditioning young people across BYMT and NYMT - and their amazingly supportive parents!

Many congratulations to your DD! Which BYMT show did she get? I bet she's thrilled. The stakes are even higher when they have done it before, aren't they - they want it even more!

Biscuitsneeded · 14/02/2025 19:37

Lionelblair · 14/02/2025 13:57

Congrats to your DD for success with another BYMT show! My DS also heard he is in a BYMT show this year - which is great news - he has enjoyed the last couple of years with BYMT. He auditioned for both NYMT and BYMT this year and so will wait to get the outcome of his recalls tomorrow (LB and Crescendo) at NYMT before making a decision. Exciting and stressful times! Wishing everyone in the recalls and musician waiting room the very best of luck. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations to your DS! Great news.

Truetoself · 14/02/2025 20:21

@Lionelblair yes that's right. Because she said she would be available i guess .....

MxPickles · 14/02/2025 22:05

Really sad times for my DD as after a show with BYMT last year this year its a second stage. She is heartbroken because of being in a whatapp group with all the people she has met over the last 2 years and currently the only one without an offer. It so much harder to try and soothe the disappointment when your kiddo is the only one out of the social group who isn't likely to be taking part. If she didn't have so many friends already I dont think it would be anywhere near as hard for her :/

We moved her audition to bring it forward a week and only gave her a days notice (family plans changed) and she came out of the session knowing she hadn't really done as well as she would have liked.

But! Just to mix things up and really be strange this year she is still in the running for a NYMT show.

Looking forward to hearing the reports from this weekends casting workshops. Good luck all x

TheOliveSwan · 14/02/2025 22:22

So sorry your DD is disappointed @MxPickles. That does sound a really hard situation for her.
I wish her all the luck in the world for NYMT recalls! And it just goes to show, it’s not down to how good she is as she’s obviously talented, it’s a range of factors I guess.

We haven’t heard anything at all from BYMT so I’m assuming that’s a no thank you since it sounds like all the offers and waiting list emails have gone out. I don’t know if this is an unusual situation as it’s our first year but that means DD has 2 show recalls with NYMT and nothing from BYMT.

I just want to get this recall weekend out of the way and get the results so I can book the conciliation BYMT camp that she’s decided she wants to do 😅.

Ah, sorry she's upset. Does second stage mean you could still get cast but just not yet? Or does it mean no show this year? I do think sometimes it's something of a lottery. I hope it doesn't dent her confidence. If she said herself she wasn't at her best then she will know it's not a reflection of having less talent but just not having been on top form. It could and does happen to anyone. Even pros have bad auditions! Hopefully she will have a great time at her NYMT recall and put this one behind her. And it sounds like there's still potential for good news?

MxPickles · 14/02/2025 23:12

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded and @TheOliveSwan. She has not booked loads of jobs/auditions in the past and usually can bounce back quite quickly. I think this is so hard because it is sinking in that she may not get to see a certain group of friends this summer

Its possible she may get a stage 2 offer, but I dont want her to pin her hopes on that and be heartbroken all over again if it doesn't go her way so I am encouraging her to think of BYMT as off the table for this year - that way if anything does change it can only be good news.

From the NYMT recall email she will definitely be offered something this summer and there are still options available so just got to keep that in mind.

Circling back to another comment someone else made - BYMT are SUPER early with first stage offers this year. They usually come out after the NYMT offers, and this time around the offers are out before NYMT have even recalled which I dont think is a coincidence. I'm fully expecting that come the first week of March there will be lots of movement as those who have perhaps done well enough to secure offers from both companies have to make a choice!

Truetoself · 15/02/2025 04:39

@MxPickles sorry to hear about your DD's disappointment It's difficult to watch your child disappointed.

If she wants a future in performing arts - unfortunately disappointments are common. But I understand about wanting to be with your friends

Lionelblair · 15/02/2025 08:00

@MxPickles I’m sure you’re absolutely right, there’ll be loads of movement early March. While disappointments are tough, I’m sure once the summer comes round and she’s booked into something, whatever that is she’ll be as excited and will enjoy it as much as she has previous experiences. Some casts do just magically get on, my son had this experience last year, but he has also loved every experience he’s had, including a new musical workshop and non-auditioned camps. It will all be clearer in a couple of weeks. 😊

It's very hard when they think they are missing out on the social side as well as the being in a show. But in reality all of those friends from last year will probably be in different shows this year and not really see each other. And you always feel nothing can be as good as the last show, and then another show comes along with a different cast and somehow the people are just as nice! Break a leg to your DD. Hopefully she will end up with some good news one way or another.

Huge hugs to your DD.

Thats the problem isn’t it - once they’ve done something before…1.they know what they are missing and 2. They take it more personal (even though they absolutely shouldn’t)

Im sure she’ll have a blast wherever she ends up this summer and can make a whole NEW bunch of friends 💜

Mumster40 · 15/02/2025 09:16

@MxPickles that’s really tough for your DD. I found the BYMT casting process so painful last year that my DC didn’t apply this year. They were put through second stage, third stage and then FOURTH stage casting without a successful outcome. This went on until May……I found it frustrating as the casting director wasn’t actually at my DC’s audition and no filming had taken so they had never actually seen them perform…..At the first round of auditions they were only asked to sing a chorus of a song. I really hope your DD has a better outcome as they will already have seen her in a show so will have a point of reference. I’ll keep everything crossed for her and for her NYMT recalls!!!

Mumster40 · 15/02/2025 09:19

Chris Cumming has just announced on Insta that 1100 young people auditioned with 700 being recalled over the weekend. Quite startling numbers! How many are in a show usually? 30? Think I’ll be managing expectations over the weekend and encouraging DC just to go and enjoy the day!

That NYMT? That’s mental isn’t it… so over half of them have been recalled….. hmmm …

To be honest that’s the vibe this thread was giving me as not many people have been offered the workshops ….

Still- it’s still great they get to have another audition and learn from the best 🥰

TheOliveSwan · 15/02/2025 09:40

Yes I just saw that, it’s an awful lot recalled! Do you think it’s 700 individual people or could it be less because some people have double recalls? Either way… it’s still not great odds is it? My DC will have a brilliant time regardless I’m sure. However, I am glad we aren’t travelling too far for what is obviously a pretty small shot at being in a show.

Biscuitsneeded · 15/02/2025 10:08

It does seem like a lot. Don't forget some of that 700 will have been recalled specifically for workshops already, so the numbers recalled for the shows will probably be smaller. And I suspect he's counting recall spots rather than individuals, so people with 2 recalls will again bring down the total. With 4 Birmingham shows and Crescendo in London I reckon there are more show places available than usual - maybe 150 or even 160? Understand the point about long and expensive journeys though. I think NYMT understand that, and that's why they are having several workshops, to give as many of those recalled as possible a chance to be involved even if they can't all be placed in a show.

TheOliveSwan · 15/02/2025 10:41

The cynic in me wonders if it’s a bit of a sales tactic. I’m sure they sell more skills courses this way by inviting lots of kids to a recall and then offering them a ‘special’ course afterwards. And the margin on the skills courses is bound to be much higher than the shows.

😱

HanD31 · 15/02/2025 11:38

I may be wrong and very new to this but weren’t there 7 new musicals to cast for as workshop weeks. I am sure I read that. They said at the Q&A there was a course for every one but they wanted all kids and up to work at their level? So if they are still casting new musicals and 4 shows and crescendo - 5…. That seems right does it not?
