Awww sorry to hear that hello. You said he was having upset not so long ago. I hope that ain’t why he decided to leave for good? He’s at the age they do make that decision though.

Maybe as the summer months come in if he misses it he can take on some more open water?

turkeyboots · 12/04/2025 13:39

I have swim mum retirement looming. DD is going to university in Sept and applied for jobs abroad for the summer. She's training through revision and exams for sanity purposes, but the end is nigh.
I however will be waking for 6am training for year to come! Almost 10 years of training is hard to break.

Glittertwins · 12/04/2025 14:24

We’ll see you there on Tuesday @itsgettingweird😀

Yes see you there Glitter 😊

turkey i still wake up early even when I don’t have to get up at 4am to take ds 🙄 Partly because I still go to bed at 9pm due to either being up at 4am that day or because I take a shit tonne of amatriptyline which knocks me out 😂🤷‍♀️ (I suffer cluster headaches)

A few years ago when my mum died my dad had to retrain his body to go to bed later and sleep in. She was always an early riser and he’d been a swimmer and so was my brother. So he naturally could fall into that pattern but being a retired widower he wanted to not have 3/4 hours of his day before most of the world were up!

I always say the day I am not a swimmer mum is the day I get what TV programmes everyone’s raving about 😂

Does DD have any ideas of unis yet? Will she swim when she goes?

Good luck Not Mini Weird and yes definitely sounds like he has arrived.

On the other hand my DS has departed and hung up his goggles. Apparently easy decision for him but it's been hard on me as that's a whole lifestyle change and a whole bunch of people Im not sure I'll see again or at least it will be a lot harder to arrange meet ups etc.

BUT so far today instead of being at a gala he has done Park Run and is now in the garden helping DH build a BBQ it's definitely different but I've got to say not necessarily worse.

Edited

Hope he enjoys whatever he chooses. He can always go back, it’s not a closed door.

@itsgettingweird she has her heart set on Queens in Belfast, as have 2 others from her squad. So if she swims, she'll have friends! Which is very reassuring for me, it will be a big change for us all.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2025 15:24

Sounds like she has her ducks in a row turkey which is great. Where does she want to work abroad? I did a number of ski and summer seasons when I left college.

turkeyboots · 12/04/2025 15:31

She's got her lifeguard and assistant coach certificates and doing Camp America as waterfront staff this year. The pay is awful, I think it may work out that we are paying more in fees than she'll make! But she's done it all by herself and is very excited.

Hellocatshome · 12/04/2025 15:55

@itsgettingweird I think it's been a combination of things to be honest. He seems like a weight has been lifted now though so currently the right decision for him. We will see what the future holds.

I hope she has a fantastic time. It’s a good experience and swimming and camp America will booster any CV in future as shows commitment and resilience!

I’m glad he feels like he’s made the right decision rather than been pushed towards it.

and as glitter said. It doesn’t have to be forever if he changes his mind.

Madcats · 12/04/2025 17:44

Well it sounds as if it is all change on the swim forum!

Sorry to hear that miniHello has packed away his swim goggles for a while. I don't loiter here very often, but it sounds as if he has made the right decision for now. He can always find a Masters squad when he is older.

Good luck with Camp America, miniturkey! My SiL met her future (American) husband when volunteering at one (albeit that there were several other serious boyfriends in between). She had a great time. One of our club coaches has a daughter at Belfast; she's really enjoying herself (I think she still swims).

We are yet to shortlist Unis down to 2 choices (Leeds/Exeter/Lancaster/Surrey). DD has been lifeguarding once/week for a year now, and coaching the younger club swimmers for 18 months (DofE Gold should be completed by the end of the month). It sounds as if it is pretty easy to get a lifeguarding job at Uni (many of her co-workers are students themselves). I think DD wants to go down the triathlon route (which will be interesting as she hasn't ridden a bike for years).

Finally good luck to Glitter and Weird's swimmers; it will be buried somewhere in iPlayers, won't it?

Apologies if I have missed anybody.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2025 18:38

Somewhere around there Mad The BBC have the rights for the next 2 years.

Good luck to DD narrowing down Uni choices. There’s a lot of pressure on them to know before they’ve even taken their exams! We have quite a lot of ex club and city uni swimmers working as lifeguards too. At our pool and at the Unis own pool.

Eccle80 · 12/04/2025 19:19

Good luck to your swimmers Glitter and Weird, hope it all goes well for them.

And sorry Hello that yours has decided to stop, I know you said a while ago he was having a hard time. Did he rule out trying another club in the end?

Glittertwins · 12/04/2025 20:39

Thank you - mine won’t be near finals so heats are on the AGB YouTube stream.

Thanks eccle - mine just hopes to swim well. It’s been tough as he’s legs have got a lot worse so a good swim at this point is the season is his aim!

Yes he has ruled it out for the time being unfortunately he picked up an injury around the same time he was already struggling with the social side and the time commitment so it has just ended up a perfect storm.

itsgettingweird · 13/04/2025 06:27

Thanks glitter

itsgettingweird · 14/04/2025 13:50

Glitter Have you seen the start list?!

Glittertwins · 14/04/2025 14:13

Oh yes…could be interesting!

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 14/04/2025 14:31

It’ll definitely be 2 races in 1!!!

Glittertwins · 14/04/2025 14:34

Seems a bit odd they’ve done that

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 14/04/2025 14:51

I know.

especially as they could have had a heat of 10 paras.

I think it’s because it’s integrated heats and sonic some events there will be S14’s up in heat 3/4
