i also thought Jazz Carlin's statement was good

Porseb · 15/09/2025 14:37

Coming to the BP discussion late.

I’m going to go against the grain and say I think Ben is at the end of his swimming career and this is an opportunity to make really good money. He would never make this sort of money in retirement for a few swims.

From what I’ve read - they can choose to swim using banned super suits, not necessarily use pharmaceuticals.

I think the bigger question is why one of our most successful swimmers feels the need to do this and at the end of the day, it comes down to this sport not paying the sort of money you could get playing football or similar.

Having spent a few years navigating NGB funding, I can tell you it’s disheartening. Rates of pay for carded swimmers are poor and haven’t kept pace with inflation for years. We all know how hard training within this sport is.

World Aquatics prize money is limited and they shut down the only other attempt (ISL) to create a more entertaining swimming event which would pay swimmers.

If we are the sort of sport that only gets spectators once every years during the Olympics, there won’t ever be money to properly pay swimmers.

itsgettingweird · 15/09/2025 16:04

I actually agree with the some of the above. I said I don’t like the premise of the games as it may cause younger swimmers to chase the money using medication - but it has to be approved drugs from what I understand? But I do understand why swimmers at the end of the career would chose this path as there isn’t the money in swimming and not all will get deals to compare etc.

I said I would prefer a minimum age limit of 25 at least to be able to compete.

So although I’m shocked at his decision and am not a fan of the games themselves I can understand why he’s taken the decision he has at this point in his career. I have concerns that the high stakes money will be a draw to the games for some rather than be something they do when their swimming career has come to an end.

I think the solution lies in making sure swimmers have a back up career for when swimming at the highest level ends for them. Many do as they train at uni etc but a few won’t and now this is available we have to accept it and look at how it’s managed.

Im at a crossroads where I don’t support the games but support peoples right to choose what works for them and can understand why they may choose this path. (And be glad I don’t think it’s ever something ds would choose!)

hotchocandtwosmokybacon · 18/09/2025 01:37

Hi all, my DD resumes training too. We missed a bit of the sessions in late August as we were away but now back to the routine.

hotchocandtwosmokybacon · 18/09/2025 01:53

Re Ben Proud, I don’t like the idea of the enhanced games but believe with his retirement, he is starting a new page and should be able to decide what he wants to do. He didn’t dope whilst he was competing in traditional sports anyway. I however find it sad that a top swimmer in our country has to take that route and risk to his body to fund his retirement. Today, people are saying Kyle Chalmers rejected the offer from enhanced games but swimming is such a big thing in Australia so Chalmers must have earned a lot more from traditional swimming in Australia than Ben in the UK.

Glittertwins · 18/09/2025 05:22

Kyle Chalmers also comes from a major sporting background, his dad was a big Aussie rules footballer. Don’t think he needs the money nor would want the association with it.

I believe the top Australian swimmers are paid directly by their benefactor, Gine Rinehart (bypassing the national governing body).

Glittertwins · 18/09/2025 16:12

I’ve read about her before, quite a woman!

How’s the life back at full training for everyone?

We had our medley champs (alls quads do 50m of each stroke) and next weekend is our first chance meet (L2 SC). Squad meeting and 1:1 done. Ds process goal is around improving his fly volume in training to increase his back end.

Ds being ds and taking it deadly seriously focussed on it this morning and it looked beautiful. It’s not easy easy for him to contend with as a stroke as it’s parallel movements and his body doesn’t work in L-R coordination 😂

He's grown the past year as well as losing more balance and coordination so I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how his technique is looking on return from summer. Let’s hope it’s translates in competition 🫣🤪

ReluctantSwimMum · 20/09/2025 20:30

It has been strangely good getting back into the training routine for us.

Some parent helpers poolside have commented to me how DD has been looking faster in training recently.

Today she absolutely smashed some events at gala. Dropped 9 seconds off her PB in 100m IM since last competing in May.

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2025 20:33

Well done DD - that’s some improvement so early on in the season - long may it continue 🎉

Glittertwins · 20/09/2025 21:07

That’s very good, hope she’s happy!

Well done. I think we are probably coming to the end of our swimming journey. DS is in year 11 and training is too much. He got two PBs last week, but no joy with that anymore even though one was a big margin. DS decided to give it until tomorrow to decide but I can’t see that he can balance everything and he’s cut other things too. It doesn’t help that DShas never fit into his club that well after a change of swimmers and coaching staff and while he likes training for its own sake, competing is going nowhere. He’s a para swimmer but not one that fits and I am not sure he wants to stay in a sport which doesn’t want him.

SkankingWombat · 21/09/2025 07:59

That's a shame whereonthestair. Does it have to be swim his full hours or quit? We have a number of swimmers who cut right back in exam years. I appreciate it's trickier as a para swimmer to find a suitable club, but maybe an hours reduction could also be a good reason to switch clubs to somewhere he feels more wanted?

Our return has been a bit bumpy as we're straight into Club Champs on top of back to full training and school. The changes at school (key stage change for 1 and moving up a school for the other inc a much earlier start. My working hours have also increased to match the longer hours DCs are out of the house) have really taken it out of us and DD1 has been ill already. I know over the next few weeks we'll all adjust to it, but it feels a bit like we've been shoved in a hamster ball and push off the top of a mountain at the moment! I think we have 3 weekends between now and mid December that don't have any kind of meet, and 2 of those 3 will be spent at our annual training camp... Thankfully some weekends are just a few hours on a Saturday night (eg Arena League dates), but a good number will take most of the weekend and some have multiple meets. DD1 will be told to stay off training on the busier weekends so she can rest, but that doesn't help me much as I'll still need to be there to coach and take DD2 to swim! 🥴
I don't think we're alone in struggling though, as I've noticed the training discipline has really deteriorated in the last couple of weeks across all squads and even in the more focused swimmers. Drills are sloppy and swimmers aren't worked to prescribed speeds (max looks leisurely, but at the same time, swimmers are racing the easy recovery lengths 🤷🏼‍♀️ There are no middling speeds on display). There have been a lot of tears, including from kids that are usually bombproof, over really minor things like a calf cramp or being overtaken. The usual suspects are requesting even more toilet breaks than normal, and I've had a couple of kids back chat in the last week, which is normally unheard of. There has been a lot of 'picking my battles' going on!

itsgettingweird · 21/09/2025 09:09

Sorry to hear he’s wanting to give up stair.

Is there no other club with a better training schedule and para swimming support he can join? Although I totally understand para swimming being integrated into training has a long way to go even though they’ve made headway into comps.

that does sound stressful wombat. Tbh ds squad have pretty much got back into it fine - they are starting with 6 weeks aerobic and drills so haven’t hit “pace” yet!

A few mumbling about quitting soon but that’s normal within his squads age group (15+) and the coaches tend to transfer them to competitive rather than performance squad training when they state their intention to see if reducing training supports them (and to stop the negativity spreading I should think too as they need to be full on board in his squad for it to work!) There’s a few that don’t agree with this approach but tbh the squad criteria is qualifying for British (or international) previous season and aiming for British and international this season so if they are saying they don’t want to train for that they aren’t meeting squad criteria.
and because it’s British and above squad it’s quite small (about 15 swimmers) it doesn’t take many being negative to drag the mood down.

Eccle80 · 21/09/2025 09:56

I’m really sorry to hear that whereonthestair. As the others suggested, are there any options to cut back and/or change club before making a final decision to stop completely?

Reluctantswimmum well done to your DD!

We’re just about to get going on competitions again. I’m interested to see how it goes for my eldest as he’s been training twice as much as he was for the last year with some renewed enthusiasm with the new coach. Both have qualified for winter regionals already but hoping to get some more times at the first meet in a couple of weeks. I’m pleased for my eldest as he didn’t quite make summer regionals with the jump in times going into open age group.

itsgettingweird · 21/09/2025 10:17

I’m also very impressed with the amount of racing some of your DCs do!

This phase we have SC L2 first chance and winter regionals (end sept and beg Nov) then end of December LC L1 meet separate to clubs calender as its world rankings sanctioned.

next year we have para nats in Feb and British (hopefully) Apr and July. He may or may not do counties and/or regionals (hopefully not 😂) and an odd few for practice at Easter meet (my preferred as our club so no travel involved for once 🤣🤷‍♀️)

Glittertwins · 21/09/2025 17:04

Thankfully this time of year has calmed down a lot since mine has all the times needed to carry right though to next January but I remember the relentless number of meets when younger.
We’ve been building back up to full style training now, the last 2-3 weeks have been preparing for that. The younger ones I coach have been great in that they’ve come back refreshed and also technique has improved for quite a few of them which is really good. Fortunately they’re too young for backchat and if I get it from the older ones, well it’s only their training that is being affected so I ignore it. Can lead a horse to water and all that!

Have you been watching Worlds glitter? Fab swim in the final.

Yes, switched from the athletics to watch that swim and was informed that it was a PB as well so even better!

I'm not going to join you over on the new thread as our swimming journey has more or less come to an end but I just wanted to say I wish all your swimmers all the success in the future and I hope they all achieve their goals and aims and most importantly keep enjoying themselves.

Glittertwins · 22/09/2025 20:06

Good luck @Hellocatshome
