You did Halo

Thanks for starting new thread. Kinda feels timely as the new season is starting to get underway.

Ds has his first open meet this weekend. Level 2 winter national qualifier. (Not that he's going 😂)

Glittertwins · 02/10/2024 19:49

We've got regional qualifiers but it's being done for race practice as he's got all the SC qualifying times he wants.

Ds is missing a 100m fly time. All rest are fine. Needs it for regionals.

His fly was miles off last year - think it's because his legs got weaker and his arms and upper body bulking out he just couldn't find the rhythm 🤷‍♀️

It's looking good again so wants to just trial it at comp and see if he wants to continue with it or stick to back as his no 2. He's no backstroker either 🫣😂 but he's discovered is he doesn't kick he's more co ordinated and goes faster 🤷‍♀️🤔🤪

ReluctantSwimMum · 03/10/2024 07:30

Hello new chat, I'm still here lurking.

My 11yo DC is still training 5 days a week and now four weeks into starting secondary school! We had a peak of tiredness and missed a few sessions last week but overall somehow juggling it all.

whereonthestair · 03/10/2024 07:35

I’m also still here and lurking. DS is trying to increase his training hours but he has also upped his school hours for exams and we are trying to encourage him to also listen to his body.

  • *My DS swims both breaststroke and freestyle without using a kick. He can’t do either with any efficiency and is much faster with a leg drag. It puts a lot of strain on his arms and shoulders, but he prefers that. He can’t yet swim fly, but was advised to ditch both kick and undulation, not really sure what will be left but there you go. Thanks for the notice about the para meet.
itsgettingweird · 03/10/2024 07:53

Yes he leg drags for breastroke.

Ds does a lot of "kick sets" using a ankle band, parachute and paddle boards to swim it pull to help build up his long stroke through his upper body and save wasting time cuddling up an area where he has muscle wasting.

It's really helpful when coaches start to get a feel for the swimmers and how their bodies work and para swimmers use their best functions to their advantage probably more than ABs because they often don't have the capacity or ability to train certain weaknesses out (iyswim?) for example there's no point putting fins on my ds because he can't make a kick set time because he can't go faster with fins really either and so he doesn't benefit from the workout.

Glittertwins · 03/10/2024 10:09

We dropped quite a few training sessions due to school trips and also the morning sessions leading into mocks and the full exams.
If they can still go regularly in the evenings (and it's not too late), it's a good way to change the subject entirely and also to get a good nights sleep.

Well ds pulled a surprise this afternoon with his 100m fly.

Did it just to try it out, no expectation, needed a time as hasn't swam it for a year, SC so not really his thing.

Swam a 6 second pb and 9 secs from what he managed a year ago when he last swam it!

Hellocatshome · 05/10/2024 18:49

Well hello everyone, didnt realise we were needing a new thread so lucky I saw this on Active threads.

DS has done 1 short course meet end of September and has the next one next weekend. Would be nice if he could get a couple more time for short course Regionals or we are going to have a pretty boring Sunday afternoon in Sheffield waiting for the last event of the day 🙈

Glittertwins · 05/10/2024 20:27

That's a pretty good PB!!

Great PB - well done DS!

Club champs here this afternoon

Eccle80 · 07/10/2024 12:43

Well done on the 100 fly, great pb!

And Hellocatshome good luck for the meet, hope he can get some more times to fill in the day!

Younger DS seems to have had a great time in Sheffield, I think he was quite anxious going off on Saturday, it’s not easy going without anyone you know well, but he had fun and enjoyed it, and got a good pb in his individual event. Eldest and I were at an open meet, and he had a couple of good pbs too that he wasn’t expecting, so was happy overall, especially as these days he often doesn’t get pbs at meets

Glittertwins · 07/10/2024 16:24

Glad he enjoyed himself. We opted not to be available due to a number of reasons so didn't go.

Hello hope he managed some more times. People don't understand how much hanging around is involved in swimming 😂

That's great eccle pleased he had a good time.

Teateaandmoretea · 08/10/2024 14:01

I spent a lot of time hanging around on Sunday

They swam a good pb and county time each though so well worth it 😁

Glittertwins · 08/10/2024 14:12

6 hours on Saturday and 11 hours on Sunday...got to love being an official!

Hello! Ventured onto here as have a competitive swim dd who happened to drop her large metal water bottle on her toe and I wondered if anyone knows if she can still swim?

She can move the toe but it’s bruised and the toenail has broken a bit. It’s more from a hygiene perspective and if I should give her some time off swimming I suppose as I think she can swim. She has a meet coming up and doesn’t want to miss training. Thanks!

Teateaandmoretea · 08/10/2024 15:30

I’d have thought if she says she’s happy to swim then all’s good. Do you mean hygiene for her or the pool? Either way that’s what chlorine’s for I think.

Maybe be careful with fins, they may hurt.

6 hours on Saturday and 11 hours on Sunday...got to love being an official!

I did TM one day and results the other! Haven't ever done my official training. Years of gynae issues and white uniform put me off.

Had my hysterectomy 2 years ago and then they changed it to black but by then I'd done my TM.

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2024 16:19

I've always said if they can swim then it's fine too. She may need to adjust her turns for a few days to prevent aggravating it but for me as long as it's not an open cut and coaches are willing to make adjustments it's not a problem.

We've had swimmers with broken arms swim kick for 4-6 weeks!

Glittertwins · 08/10/2024 16:59

It might feel a bit weird if the nail is hanging off a bit though!

OP posts:
vites · 08/10/2024 19:21

Thanks for all of the advice. And wow re the broken arms!

Swimmers choice I may add! Coaches make them have a week off and will RA then swimming if they approach and ask.

If it's a muscular injury they'll insist on time out and request a physio assesses and will adapt training for a phased return.

When a rugby player had a toenail lose they let him swim but he had to tape it up so toenail didn't come off during training!!! Then tape over the nail for a week after it came off as new one had come through and needed time to harden.

Ds is a para swimmer and they always allow him to pull if his legs are bad. Although he has to pull will band, parachute and paddles 😂😂 he'll thank them in the end 🤪
