I think she's just clocked on that these events are unpopular and therefore statistically more like to yield a medal, yet the parts that make them unpopular don't bother her - it's been a sucessful combination for her (she came 2nd on this occasion). To her: why battle it out with 30 other swimmers in the 50 free where even at her age a couple of tenths can be the difference between 1st and 10th, when there are only 3 other DCs her age who are swimming that horribly unpopular event afterwards...? 😂 (She does still swim all the 'easier' events throughout the year too of course).

Eccle80 · 31/03/2025 13:37

Well done to her for braving it! I’m sure she’ll get her county time next time now she knows she can get through it. She has good logic too, there’s definitely a niche in being good at the events not many like swimming!

whereonthestair · 31/03/2025 20:02

Sounds eminently sensible to me. Concentrate on where you can get the best odds.

The kids who are tough enough to swim these events end up better all round than those (like mine) who won’t.

SkankingWombat · 01/04/2025 08:55

I have one of those too Tea - DD2 doesn't 'do' physical discomfort, and is definitely just there for the social and Haribo 😂 Which is also fine: she's keepng active and having fun. She will be well suited to team events when she's old enough next year I think: all short events, mostly relays, even more shouting and cheering than usual. DD1, meanwhile, finds the relay cheering a bit too loud and overwhelming 😂

Is everyone breaking up tomorrow for Easter?

I break up from school but ds still has work next week.
He will be tapering for champs though.

Then he has a week after champs until he goes to France with AGB for world para series and classification review.

Eccle80 · 03/04/2025 20:26

We’ve still got another week until Easter holidays. It also means that the first weekend of regionals is the end of the holidays as Easter is so late this year.

itsgettingweird · 03/04/2025 20:33

Our age regionals are around about then I think. Our youth are always May bank holiday weekend.

we aren’t there though as DS away that weekend still.

Glittertwins · 04/04/2025 06:21

No gap in training here although next week will be more tapered for those swimming at British Champs. Then ramp back up again for the last weekend of regionals.

No gap in training. I was thinking about schools breaking up!!! Occupational hazard 😂 DS hasn’t been at school or in education for 18 months now!

I think most regionals are pretty much at end of national window which I assume is the design of them?

Glittertwins · 04/04/2025 13:01

Schools finish today. We’ve already had the first weekend of regionals too. The decision was not a popular one.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 04/04/2025 15:56

That’s early from what I understand?

I don’t really know much about any of it because DS first regionals was 2022, he missed 23 as was in Turkey/Berlin and last year just swam it for social side as just back from Madeira! And he isn’t doing this years as he in France 😂

So I have no pre Covid knowledge of how things worked, if they've changed or evolved - and because it’s only the first year (2022) he qualified for nationals (and it was British nats) I have no idea if what I know is what’s always happened iyswim? I don’t think the qualifying criteria for paras has been the same any of the 3 years he’s qualified!!!

His swimming career sort of went L3/4 meets in a small club to no swimming due to Covid - to bigger club as old club couldn’t offer hours post Covid to classification in Oct 2021 and it taking off!

I feel like I’m trailing along still trying to figure it all out 😂

Madcats · 04/04/2025 17:19

I submitted Regional entries a couple of days ago, and the last qualifying meet for consideration is this weekend!

SW always do the Youth events over the May BH weekend with the Juniors a week before and a week after.

We did an emergency dash to Sports Direct for some swim gear for DD to try a Uni pool prior to its offer holder day tomorrow. I’d forgotten how blooming hot poolside is (she can walk to/from squad these days).

Glittertwins · 04/04/2025 21:02

It’s way too early, it’s putting the swimmers in our region at a massive disadvantage in a loss of training time and limited last minute events as everyone else is still doing their regionals.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 17:10

We have our regional team relays this afternoon.

just got in and catching up on you tube - it’s very exciting!

we’ve had a couple of medal finishes as a club (for obvious reasons ds is not competing 😂👀) so hopefully that should translate into national qualifying times.

i probably (or really should!) know this - but do you have relays at British and at nationals?

Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 17:15

Have they tried to economise by not actually naming the clubs??? Relay A/B etc seems odd

OP posts:
Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 17:15

Relays at Summer British only

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 17:18

No idea!!!!

Im having to figure out which of the 3/4 clubs with similar looking hats are ours until they actually say!!!

The easiest one was our girls medley as our backstroker is in a class of her own!!!

itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 17:18

Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 17:15

Relays at Summer British only

Thanks.

we’ve only done British nats and they had relays so wasn’t sure - I like the fact we get to watch them. They are very exciting!

Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 17:31

I’m watching to see how many go faster on the 4x100 free relay. Nobody in NW region did

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 18:01

we have some quick teams down here - will be interesting to see how they compare to some of the quick and big teams nationally

itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 18:02

Your seniors now?

Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 18:10

Sadly yes!

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 05/04/2025 18:25

Here goes 👀👀👀👀

Glittertwins · 05/04/2025 18:42

I don’t think we have any chance. That was very fast!
