Hopefully this will work as we’re at 999 on the other!

They have finally updated the rankings to say sex not gender. I have been going on about this for ages - especially around the transgender debate and what category people compete in.

Brilliant - well done!

Glittertwins · 26/03/2023 19:51

Yep, DS told me earlier, it wasn't like that yesterday

DS has his first evening after school session for a gala this weekend. Usually gets in from school at 3:15 has toast and milk and goes to training for 4 and has his tea afterwards. Warm up for the gala starts at 5;30. Would you try to fit tea in before hand or just do a more substantial snack? Its a distance event if that makes a difference.

I'd be sticking chicken/fish and rice / veg in him at 4pm. Light weight, easy to digest and will fuel him through.
What does he have a lunch? We'd give them a home made pasta pot and then the lighter fuel meal around 2 hours before warm up

Thanks. He has whatever school dinner he chooses, my attempts to make any suggestions on lunch choices have been well and truly rejected in the past so I dont even bother anymore. I could probably manage to get him to eat a chicken sandwich and a few salad veggies around 4. I have never known a boy let alone a swimming boy eat as little as my DS. We have had some tips from a dietician to try and help him gain weight. I am piling on the pounds and he still looks like he's wasting away!

Eccle80 · 27/03/2023 19:14

That’s amazing well done to him!

itsgettingweird · 27/03/2023 19:49

Hello if you can get dinner in him at 3.30 ish that would be ideal. They recommend a meal 3 hours before racing so with WU at 5.30 and racing starting at 6.30? That would fit really well.

What a brilliant achievement 👏

Midgeymoo12 · 27/03/2023 23:03

We are new to swimming (DD 10 training at a club for around a year). She did her first gala recently and she has regional qualifying times for two events. Age group is 11/12, so she is younger end.

Is it worth going along even if she will be at the lower end of the times? Am thinking it would be good experience in a 50M pool, and chance to get a new PB, but am wondering if should leave until next year?

Definitely go. Its not about winning its about the experience and every chance to swim/race is a learning opportunity. Plus she NEEDS the hoodie 🤣

Thanks! I have entered on line, but as she is scraping in I will wait to see if accepted :) It is all about the hat / hoodie - I see the faster kids at swimming sporting the county championship kit!

Eccle80 · 28/03/2023 00:02

I agree, absolutely go, it’s a great achievement to qualify, especially if she is in the 11s, and will be good to get the experience of competing in that environment. And as Hellocatshome says it is all about the hoodies!

itsgettingweird · 28/03/2023 03:03

Absolutely go. What an achievement getting times!

My ds didn't start competitive swimming until 11 and did his first counties etc last year. It's all experience and they tend to love the atmosphere and the competing at a regionals. And of course the merchandise Grin

I would definitely give him something more substantial - like a mini dinner as it could be a long evening.

Maybe a pasta as he gets in from school and a banana or smoothie post warm up

Well done little Midgeymoo! My DD is the same age, swimming in the 11 age group but was only 10 in November. She has qualified for 1 regional time in the 200 breast (her favourite!) and is so excited. Obviously she will not be rank very highly as it's the 11/12 thing, but a great experience.

Madcats · 29/03/2023 11:03

Welcome Midgeymoo12 !

Absolutely go ahead and enter your DD. Just enjoy purchasing the Swimhat/T shirt/Hoodie.

Far better to get some exposure to LC swimming with a couple of races and warm ups than to wait a year (when DC might have more races to swim).

Good luck

Exciting! It is a couple of weeks until we find out if entry accepted. For us, it is freestyle events.

itsgettingweird · 29/03/2023 17:21

Midgy do you use rankings? It's always a good gauge of if a swimmer is likely accepted on time because it gives you their ranking to compare against accepted number of swimmers.

Slightly more taxing when there's a double age group and also if they accept SC and LC entry times but it does help!
