NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Ds recorded his NYMT audition on Saturday, he just has to film his introduction and send it all off (the deadline has been extended). It's a long shot as he isn't classically trained and has no grades but his hobby is playing and programming musical theatre scores so we thought why not.

Comefromaway · 01/02/2021 15:29

And of course you know that as it was you who told me about the extension (teach me to look at someones username)

DD has a place on the cast of Peter Pan should have been last summer, the April and now August with a three days casting in summer half term.
The performances will either be Powderham Castle near Exeter or an Ambassador Theatre in London.
A year older, nearly a full year of full time training she is hopefully it will put her in a good position for parts.
They had an online meet and greet October half term and heard some songs - she is particularly taken by Tinkerbell's song in this production she is a full Rock/pop diva.

Lonecatwithkitten · 03/02/2021 06:40

That's a BYMT show I should say.
@Comefromaway a boy who liked playing his guitar did a BYMT audition when he was 14 and got on a show - Ed Sheeran now a BYMT patron not everyone has formal training.

Comefromaway · 03/02/2021 11:02

Ds’s choice of repertoire for his audition was quite unusual shall we say. The overture from the Book of Mormon, first played on piano, the. A short excerpt on keyboard showing how he’d programmed the patches.

@Comefromaway BYMT often have 'experimental' musicals DD was A.L.I.C.E in wanderlust a devised musical with an abstract modern theme - sounds like it could be the kind of thing he would be into.
All bar one of the songs was written in the two week rehearsal period and the entire script was devised in the first week. If he searches on Facebook the trailer was released there by BYMT 30/12/19.
It was the point at which DD truly knew this was her chosen career.

He wants Beauty. But I know that’s unlikely. Although the orchestration does use three keyboards.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/02/2021 13:14

do you mean Hunchback @Comefromaway? yes, sounds completely epic! I think if DD offered musician she would like that one too :-)

Durr, I do mean Hunchbsck, beauty was the show dh’s college did before lockdown.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/02/2021 13:33

ps I think his choice of audition rep sounds AWESOME!

all the actor//singers rounds have taken
place.

Yr10mom · 13/02/2021 09:00

put her videos in....

doesanybodyhaveamap · 13/02/2021 09:49

Eek! DD in her workshop right now! Let 3 hours of nervous pacing commence....

@Yr10mom I think they'll wait until after the stage performers are at least through the online workshops x

How did she get on?

Application to NYMT submitted. The section about experience/grades etc was a it un-nerving as I had to put ds has only been playing the piano for 3 years and has no grades.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 20:14

@Comefromaway she came out and burst into tears! She doesn't feel it went well but it is so hard to judge these things over zoom.

We haven't heard anything about the musician application yet so fingers crossed for that 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I wouldn't worry about the grade thing. The way he plays will be the main thing they are interested in. DD's last exam on her first study was grade 3 at age 8!! She's now playing at above G8 standard. It just gives them some idea of standard for those that follow the grades route.

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 16/02/2021 21:02

Oh no. It is so difficult on zoom and I’m sure she did fine. They will be aware of the difficulties with zoom.

Dd has got very upset on occasions when she’s struggled to hear or see or screen freezing for her normal college classes.

The thing with ds’s playing is I have absolutely no idea what his standard is. The very few classical pieces that he plays under extreme sufferance are about Grade 5. But he barely practises them whereas he’ll spend hours practising Jason blinking Robert Brown! I think he plays this other stuff (musical theatre scores) to a higher standard but I don’t really know. And his technique needs a lot of work.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 21:31

Well.. she said she did the best she could. That's all anyone can do, right? In their hands now... apparently it could be up to a month before we hear!!!

She has a BYMT one booked on Saturday so we'll give that a go too! All good experience....

Has DS thought about the BYMT musician pool? If successful they don't have to reaudition for that one in future years, once they're in, they're in....

I’m not sure. Slightly complicated by the fact a friend of dh is MD for one of their summer shows.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 21:45

Lol, I'd consider that a bonus!

Alakazam8 · 19/02/2021 13:52

Does anyone know if you hear back after submitting videos either way? Fist time doing this and just wondering so I can prepare dd.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 19/02/2021 15:56

Hi @Alakazam8 you will definitely hear either way, but it will take a while for musician news I think.

My DD has her NYMT zoom this weekend. She's really nervous, I've never put her forward for anything like this so don't know what to expect. She can dance and act to a high standard but her singing isn't as strong (she can hold a tune well enough but not soloist material) do they realistically need to be a "triple threat"?

Do people generally apply for NYMT and BYMT?

I'm totally out of my comfort zone with all this as I have no idea how to help her.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 19/02/2021 16:53

@feelinhopeful if she's through to workshop then they are happy enough with her singing. My DD not a triple threat- she can move, but isn't a 'dancer'. So she found that tough in the workshop. She got in last year x
