NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?
@feelinhopeful if she's through to workshop then they are happy enough with her singing. My DD not a triple threat- she can move, but isn't a 'dancer'. So she found that tough in the workshop. She got in last year x
Thank you, did you receive some script to learn in advance of the zoom workshop? They said on the Facebook live that it would be sent out but we haven't received anything.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 19/02/2021 17:36

Yes, it will probably arrive any time now... but they don't need to learn it, just get familiar with it.

Good luck and hope she has fun!

Excellent thanks. She's a bit of a perfectionist so she'll probably try to learn it!

They get asked to read any character(s) and stop and start in particular places, so hard to learn the whole thing. Try not to stress 😍

So pleased we hear either way after submitting videos. Dd is submitting as performer and I’ve already been in touch with them. They seem very friendly and encouraging so I’m sure they will be the same with the children!

Lonecatwithkitten · 20/02/2021 04:24

@feelinhopeful definitely not the rounded triple threat needed for BYMT. There is a range of shows dance connections for the stronger dancers, devised shows that suit the actor singers more.
My DD got a devised she her first year when she was more an actor singer, last year from the auditions as she became more triple treat she got Peter Pan.
DD had really only been in a local MT group doing quite well when she went for her first audition NYMT didn't go well, but it turned out she was brewing appendicitis. BYMT she found the audition friendlier and more welcoming.
She adored her first BYMT show thoroughly enjoying the whole two weeks she was away.

feelinhopeful · 20/02/2021 09:58

@doesanybodyhaveamap did they have to sing on their own for the audition workshop? She's getting herself into a flap about it all this morning!

@Lonecatwithkitten is it too late to audition with BYMT too? Do many people audition with both or is it generally one or the other?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 20/02/2021 10:15

@feelinhopeful no singing at all, just dancing and acting today x

And not too late for BYMT, some try both but not everyone. You'll find people who firmly prefer one over the other- in both camps!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 20/02/2021 10:16

DD doing a BYMT workshop today actually... we're in the 'keep all options open' camp 😘

OP posts:
Lonecatwithkitten · 20/02/2021 18:43

@feelinhopeful so do both and as @doesanybodyhaveamap says some are firmly in one camp.
DD didn't audition for NYMT last year as she felt BYMT was more her tribe. No point auditioning this year as she is already on a held over 2020 show.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 20/02/2021 20:07

DD loved her BYMT audition today. No tears this time!

How did you get on @feelinhopeful ??

@doesanybodyhaveamap

DD loved her BYMT audition today. No tears this time!

How did you get on @feelinhopeful ??

Audition is this afternoon, 2.30-5.30. I'll let you know how it goes.

She's currently practicing with the script in her room, trying to work out how she would play each character if asked.

My biggest problem is keeping the other 3 children quiet while she does the audition, we are open plan and her room definitely isn't big enough to do it in.

Stagemom · 21/02/2021 11:06

Hi, my daughter is also doing NYMT today at same time😊
Good luck to your dd too 🤞🏼

feelinhopeful · 21/02/2021 12:09

Oh wow, how exciting. Good luck for your DD too @Stagemom!

Biscuitsneeded · 21/02/2021 14:10

Good luck to those auditioning now! My DS did his yesterday. he really enjoyed the acting, and would have enjoyed the dance, except that when it was his turn the video glitched and when the music came back he didn't know where he was! So he thinks that bit didn't show him in his best light. But everyone is dealing with the vagaries of Zoom so they can only do their best. His biggest concern is how on earth they choose, because everybody seemed to be so good. But the NYMT creatives are amazing and I don't doubt they have it all in hand.

Stagemom · 21/02/2021 14:19

Oh no Biscuits, zoom is horrible, hopefully it's the last time they will need to audition on Zoom!
We had BYMT last week and dd loved it. Both great companies, shed be happy with either😊

doesanybodyhaveamap · 21/02/2021 14:57

I think it's also hard to feel
Like you've 'shone' on zoom anyway, but also they've already weeded out the weaker ones this time round in the video audition so everyone in the workshops is pretty good... the mixed ages also knocked DD's confidence a bit I think as she's towards the younger end so felt like she was 'up against' trained professionals (even though she actually wasn't)

feelinhopeful · 21/02/2021 17:35

That was a really good afternoon, my DD loved it. She was the youngest one in her section so I doubt she'll get a recall but was a great experience regardless.

Biscuitsneeded · 21/02/2021 17:36

Yes, totally agree, it's unlikely anyone comes out of a zoom audition thinking "Well I was clearly the best performer in the room and I totally nailed that!". Time will tell. As for all ages and levels of experience being in together, I can see how that might feel intimidating, but the younger ones need to know they are not in competition with the older ones! In fact they're not really in competition even with the other younger ones. NYMT can recall as few or as many as they see potential in, for any of this year's roles - it's not as if they start the session thinking right, we can only recall 5 out 40. They can recall 5 or they can recall 20. It's also good to remember they are recalling specifically for this year's shows, so if your DC doesn't get a recall it doesn't mean they're not talented, just that this time they don't fit the requirements. My DS has now applied 6 times for NYMT and every year he is shocked by some people not getting cast when they are clearly so talented - so if 2021's not your DC's year it's always worth trying again.

Biscuitsneeded · 21/02/2021 17:40

@feelinhopeful That's brilliant your DD enjoyed it. Age means nothing! They need the full range from 10 - 23, so if they think your DD could be right this time she has as much chance of a recall as the older ones. How old is she? My DS was 10 when he first auditioned and I remember thinking, oh well he's very young and nowhere near as talented as some of those incredible teens. Hey presto - cast in a show! NYMT are casting geniuses. I thought it was all a horrible mistake until I saw the show!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 21/02/2021 17:42

I hate this waiting though... 1 week down, potentially another 3 to go!!! 😫😫😫

doesanybodyhaveamap · 21/02/2021 17:42

Glad it went well @feelinhopeful

OP posts:
feelinhopeful · 21/02/2021 17:50

@Biscuitsneeded she's 12. First time auditioning so didn't know what to expect. Going to be a long wait to find out!

Biscuitsneeded · 21/02/2021 17:53

Fingers crossed @feelinhopeful. It is indeed going to be a painful wait!

Alakazam8 · 22/02/2021 09:40

Good luck to those dc who have already auditioned. Not submitted videos yet but will be later this week.
It’s good to hear that the zoom auditions seem to be less daunting than I thought initially. Hope they don’t have too long to wait for the results.
