NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

What a lovely supportive forumSmile fingers crossed for them all!!!

Triflefan · 02/03/2021 10:59

I’m sorry if I missed this but if they do receive a recall, how long do they have to prepare?
I feel like a ‘soccer mom’ but because he’s applied using his email address (which he never checks) I feel out of the loop and he’ll get annoyed if I keep asking him to check!
I can well imagine him announcing the night before and then being up all night reading through.

DalekFan · 02/03/2021 11:35

Hi All, I’m new to this forum, hope you don’t mind me coming on. It’s great to read all about your DCs.

My DD is hoping to get into NYMT or BYMT this year but knows it will be tough. She submitted her tape to NYMT on 20/02 and she heard back yesterday that she has a workshop this Saturday. No scripts provided yet though. She is nervous and excited!

Alakazam8 · 02/03/2021 11:42

Well done to @DalekFan’s dd for getting through to the workshop stage. Hope it all goes well on Saturday and she enjoys the workshop, whatever the result!

DalekFan · 02/03/2021 11:45

Thank you @Alakazam8

doesanybodyhaveamap · 02/03/2021 11:51

@Triflefan the material comes through about 5-6pm the evening before the workshop, so you don't actually have much time to prep! It's fine though, they don't expect you to know the scripts, just be familiar with them. The dance is all taught on the day. Smile

@DalekFan well done to your DD how exciting!!!!

We sent DD's on the 24th so perhaps we'll hear something this week.

Hope it goes well.

Triflefan · 02/03/2021 12:00

That’s great news @DalekFan :)

Thank you @doesanybodyhaveamap
I’ll make sure he at least looks at his emails on a Friday then!

Biscuitsneeded · 02/03/2021 12:41

Hi @DalekFan! Welcome. Congrats to your DD and I hope she enjoys Saturday - let us know how it goes!

Biscuitsneeded · 02/03/2021 12:43

@Triflefan you'll probably get two emails. One telling him he has a recall workshop (which since he got in last year I would think is very likely) which should give you at least a few days notice, and then one the night before with zoom log in details and a bit of script to READ but not learn. That's all you need to worry about for now!

DalekFan · 02/03/2021 12:43

Thank you all for your good wishes. Will let you know how it goes. Smile

Triflefan · 02/03/2021 12:50

@minimits re self taping, that’s exactly what my son was doing. His singing teacher told him to set a 45 minute timer and walk away!

Triflefan · 02/03/2021 12:56

@Biscuitsneeded
I didn’t see your most recent post, sorry. I really hope he does 😬
That’s good to know. I’ll not hassle him for a few days then as it sounds unlikely he’ll hear for a while
If they are both cast again, it’ll be funny if it’s the same show again!
Last time the recall material was specific to the shows they were being considered for. Is that the same this time?

Biscuitsneeded · 02/03/2021 13:14

@Triflefan If invites have gone out for Saturday it may be that another set are about to go out for Sunday - I'd advise your DS to keep checking now! This first recall the script is generic, but I'm sure for the final recall if we get there they will send stuff in advance that is specific to the particular show.

chaperonemum · 03/03/2021 12:15

Out of interest as it's our first time applying. How did your DC's choose their song and monologue? Also did you have any input or did they choose totally themselves?

My DD chose hers totally alone although she ran them past her singing teacher.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/03/2021 12:34

@chaperonemum DD and I chose together. But she's generally quite accepting of my suggestions (for now...) How old is your DD?

chaperonemum · 03/03/2021 12:36

@doesanybodyhaveamap My DD has just turned 13.

I'm not sure I'd be that much help to be honest. She chooses stuff I don't really know.

Alakazam8 · 03/03/2021 12:57

My dd and I chose the monologue together and she chose the song with her singing teacher. She really liked both and that came across, particularly in the song

Biscuitsneeded · 03/03/2021 13:12

Mine chose his song himself - I didn't even know it. He was stuck for a monologue so asked my advice and then disregarded it anyway!

chaperonemum · 03/03/2021 13:29

@Biscuitsneeded Grinsounds like my DD!!

Biscuitsneeded · 03/03/2021 13:40

We definitely used to overthink the choice of song. My advice now to anyone is to pick the song you feel most comfortable singing. NYMT won't judge you for doing Disney/ALW and they won't put you in a show just you because you pick Sondheim. They just want to see and hear you do your best. When it comes to final recall they get the auditionees singing music from the specified show anyway so the first rounds are just about showing what they can do.Last year my DS' voice was starting to break (it went properly the night before final recall, which is another story...) and he had a tiny range so he went for Chim Chim Cheree. He was worried it was too babyish and too simple, but the fact was he could hit the notes and it's a song you can perform. It did the trick and they even told him it was a wise choice given his limitations.

Triflefan · 03/03/2021 13:55

I had no involvement in the monologue. There is a book of suggested monologues for auditions which is probably worth looking out for but DS doesn’t like to pick anything he considers might be predictable. I don’t think it would be an issue at all. His was from a random play he’d studied.

Songs are always a nightmare. He has a firm idea that he won’t be swayed on and then changes his mind at the last minute!
He had actually been working on Out There with his singing teacher before the shows were announced. He obviously couldn’t use that which is a shame

minimits · 03/03/2021 14:02

DS chose a (miserable) monologue which suited his age and interests (teenager in Nazi Germany). The National Theatre Connections books are great as they are written for youth performances and it has a range of monologues-if they like the monologue they can then get the whole play so they know the context. He won't be told song wise-he sings what he loves!

DalekFan · 03/03/2021 14:06

My DD (14) chose her song and monologue but did run them past me. Not sure what she’d have done if I said I thought they were not the right ones to do (ignore me probably!) 😂.
