NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

@DalekFan
Sounds about right! 😆
@minimits thanks for the heads up to getting him to check. He’s not heard but actually does seem to be checking regularly now. In fact he came to tell me he has his Covid test slot for college before I’d even noticed!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2021 09:16

seriously considering a change of username to 'ihatewaiting'..... anyone else going slightly potty??

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 09:47

A little bit but feel better knowing we hear either way. Would be worse if we didn’t hear if we hadn’t got in. Wouldn’t know when to stop checking!

Triflefan · 04/03/2021 10:44

Me too! I think it’s exacerbated by the lack of excitement in our lives right now!
It doesn’t help that Last Minute Larry didn’t submit until last week so we’re still waiting to hear if he’s even got a recall.
I feel for all of those who’ve already had their workshops and have to wait for the stragglers

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 14:09

It can't be too much longer. We know there are workshops this saturday and we know that people who submitted later in Feb haven't heard anything yet. Maybe those they want to recall from that group will be given a workshop on 13/14 macrh and we might hear soon after that? If they can do 160 applicants in a weekend I'm hoping there weren't so many last-minute applicants that things are delayed still further! They are also probably aware that BYMT will send out their results late March/early April and won't want to lose really good applicants who've applied to both to that, so my feeling is they will send out news about who is recalled for what by late March even if they can't actually do the recalls this month.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 14:09

Sorry about my typing!

Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 14:17

@Alakazam8

Good luck to all who are waiting like us. Does anyone’s dc have a particular show they would like or are happy just to wait and see. We are hoping for Hunchback for a particular reason (won’t say exactly what) as it seems to be going to be quite a different production.
My ds would love Hunchback too for a couple of particular reasons. It's the reason he auditioned at all to be honest & we would have to think very carefully about him doing any of the other productions.
Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 14:21

@Alakazam8

Just read about Hunchback being inclusive. Totally agree with *@minimits* there. It will give some children who would never have the chance to participate in something like this an amazing opportunity and the ‘mainstream’ children something completely different too. I imagine this one will be amazing to watch too!
I didn't know about this! Ds is autistic and so is dd. (I really wish dd had auditioned but she's got such a lot on with it being grad year and postgrad auditions etc.)
Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 14:41

I agree that Hunchback sounds fantastic, and I am sure it will generate a lot of interest. But as a parent whose child has been lucky enough to do NYMT several times, I would say that if your child is lucky enough to be given a place in any show, I wouldn't discount it just because it's not the one you initially had in mind. If they take the place, I can almost guarantee they will love it and it will be an amazing show and a wonderful experience. The two shows that are not Hunchback have gorgeous scores and fantastic creatives, and your child would be performing at The Other Palace (and buying their snacks in Boots alongside the cast of Hamilton!) It's a very, very special experience.

The reason why Hunchback would be most suitable are related to his autism and don't have much to do with the show itself.
Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 14:50

Ds does love The Other Palace though having attended Falsettos and Be More Chill there. But it's a LONG way from home and support would need to be put in place.

Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 14:54

The liklihood of him being offered anything of course is very low, we just thought it worth a shot.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 15:10

Surely like @Comefromaway says the idea of Hunchback being inclusive will attract young people who otherwise would not think of applying for something like this. Of course I’d be grateful for any show at all but Hunchback is our first choice for other reasons, not to do with which show it is...
This thread is really helping with the waiting, just knowing that there are others waiting too and we are not the only ones!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2021 15:14

Out of interest, does anyone know of anyone that got a 'no' at the self tape stage??

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 15:22

I don't know anyone in real life who has applied.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 15:49

Neither do I but I’m sort of expecting to!

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 16:03

DS' friends have had yeses but they are all performing friends, many of whom have done NYMT before and all of whom are strong performers, so you would expect them to get recalled for the workshop. I think it's likely the big cut will come between workshop and final recalls. He said the standard in his workshop was really high. Lord knows how they choose!
@Comefromaway and @Alakazam8 I totally hear what you're saying. I can vouch for the competence and professionalism of the NYMT pastoral team, although of course I have no idea what extra measures they have planned to put in place to meet the needs of an inclusive production. And I agree it's nice to have this thread which seems lovely, and supportive. Good luck to all the DC.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/03/2021 17:58

BYMT have sent details today of how the shows held over from last year will work under the current road map. Again we have the four options stay on show, move to different show, move to workshop or full refund. We have to confirm by 19/3 so I imagine this will then help them make final decisions about this years auditionees.
No brainier here stay on show it was DD's dream show so casting work shop 3 days summer half term then off to Devon on 19/7 with five days of performances in August. She is beside herself with excitement to perform again MT is her reason for getting up everyday.

chaperonemum · 04/03/2021 18:30

@Lonecatwithkitten how wonderful that your DD can finally get to do the show. Lovely to hear positive news.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 19:42

That’s brilliant news for @Lonecatwithkitten’s dd. It must have been so hard to get through and then not be able to perform the show. We are lucky coming in this year as newbies.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2021 19:57

Fab news @Lonecatwithkitten !!! Wow, 19th July is early.... I've just booked DD onto a music course in Austria (a whole different level of optimism, I know...) from 18-24th. Hope I'm not narrowing her options 😳😬

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 21:00

@Lonecatwithkitten I'm glad to hear things are coming together for your DD. We all just need to keep fingers crossed now that things can really happen this summer!

DalekFan · 04/03/2021 21:53

Wonderful news for your DD @Lonecatwithkitten. Here’s hoping for a great performing summer for all our DCs 🤞

minimits · 05/03/2021 06:48

Great news @Lonecatwithkitten, good to have something solid in the pipeline.

Newgirls · 05/03/2021 13:56

Anyone else heard? I’ve slightly lost track of when the workshops are!
