Hello all, and welcome to the party kiwibella. Well done all of you making progress.

I'm feeling a bit low today, because I seem to have picked up a pesky injury - just as I start the final week and was patting myself on the back at having avoided such things!! I managed the full 30 minutes today (yay!), managed to run through the stitch, but about a minute from the end my left knee started really hurting. The outside of the knee is now really sore and there is a line of soreness all the way up my outer thigh. A running friend of mine immediately knew what it was - apparently Iliotibial Band Syndrome. I looked it up on the internet and the symptoms are spot-on. Not too serious, luckily.

Possible causes include poor shoes (no, not any more), too much too soon (possibly....) and running on cambered surfaces (Aha! Lightbulb moment!! The route I've been running recently is all on slopy pavements, and as it's a circuit my left leg has been on a lower level than the right one all the way around. Dur!)

I'm just really cross because I don't want to stop running, but I have to be sensible and rest it for a few days. And run in the other direction when I start again! So I'll take it easy for the week.

loler · 20/07/2010 13:38

Here was I coming on to brag about making the whole 20 min (week 5) run - and MrsD top trumps me with 30minutes - wow! Hope the knee gets better very soon, will look out for those pesky cambers - a tip worth remembering!

Someone tell me that the 20 minutes gets easier please - I felt as though I was having an asthma attack for the last five minutes (never had asthma but how I imagine it would feel).

Week six tonight.

A nice mner from my book club pointed out this pobcast with alternative music (similar but different to myblack ones) nicole's podcasts

TheNextMrsDepp · 20/07/2010 17:25

But loler - you did the 20 minute run!! Congratulations! Don't do yourself down. I'm only on the last week because I started sooner than you did.

If it helps, I found that the increase from 20 to 30 minutes was a lot easier than getting to 20. I seem to hit some sort of wall mid-teens, and if I can get past that to 20 minutes I found I can keep going for quite a while.

I think Week 6 takes you back to shorter intervals at first, but then back to longer runs, it'll be easier by then.

Must try nicole's podcasts. I'm afraid I went back to Raww..bert for Weeks 8 and 9 because the Suz ones were dreadful. Robert's music is a bit new-age, but it certainly gets you running.

Knee is still stiff, so I won't be running tomorrow, but it is a little better than it was. Fingers (and knees) crossed.

notanidea · 21/07/2010 06:58

Join in Kiwi.

Well done loler and Mrs Depp. I am dreading the last run of week 6.It is a pychological barrier and need all your help. I am going away this weekend and am planning to do it during the holiday - change of scenery might help.

notanidea · 21/07/2010 06:58

BTW Mrs Depp Hope your knee gets better soon.

TheNextMrsDepp · 21/07/2010 17:25

Just go for it, notanidea, you'll conquer that 20 minute run! If you're not at home make sure you've got a route mapped out beforehand so there are no nasty hilly surprises. Try not to think about how knackered you are feeling, just visualise how nice it will be to report back to us all that you did it!

Knee feeling much better, thanks, but I'll leave the next run until Friday at the earliest and see how I go.

kiwibella · 21/07/2010 20:44

thanks guys

MrsDepp... that is the best advice - visualise the end / have something to look forward to / think about how you will feel when you have achieved it!

I did a second "run" tonight... loved it but my knees are giving me trouble, mostly in the change of pace from walk to run or the other way. Very achy legs since day 1 but feel brilliant.

I'm very envious of you ladies running 20 mins + . Amazing achievement!!

FiByTheIcySea · 21/07/2010 21:05

loler well done on your 20min run! I'm just a few behind you.. I'm just back from wk5run1 and discovered that i've got that 20min run coming.. when i'm next on the laptop i'll check out that link thanks :-)
notanidea you'll manage that last wk6 run.. it's only 5 more mins than the wk5 end one. I found wk4 so hard.. didn't think i'd manage wk5#1 today at all but i did and it wasn't as bad as last wks. Trust in the program.. i'm surer than ever now we can all manage this! have a lovely time away btw.
nextmrsdepp hope your knee continues to get better will keep fingers crossed you get out on friday x
Half way through my run tonight the heavens opened and for the 1st time I was running in the rain. Got quite wet but it was surprisingly refreshing lol!!!

FiByTheIcySea · 21/07/2010 22:03

should have hit refresh before posting..
great going kiwibella just think.. in 4wks time you'll be starting your 20min runs

MABS · 22/07/2010 10:34

hi all just seen this thread, am a total novice so am in awe of you all! could i be nosey and ask if you are doing this for weightloss or is it more about fitness? if it is weightloss, what is achievable weekly? thx

nobiggy · 22/07/2010 11:02

Did my 3 mile walk/run this morning, faster than last week, but didn't feel good. Stopped early on the first interval, just couldn't get the air in. Managed the others but slowly.

Thinking I may repeat week 2. Maybe I need 6 goes at it each time.

FiByTheIcySea · 22/07/2010 13:41

nobiggy slowly doesn't matter.. at least I hope it doesn't as sometimes my 'runs' i've struggled with are so slow people could walk past me quicker!
MABS my reasons for starting are varied.. Yes I felt it would be good to get fitter but it was more the fact that I turned 40 this year.. had always had dreams of running happily around the place and thought life's too short why not give it a go. I also fancied some me time which is hard to get since the arrival of dc#2. I also had about 10lbs post dc's weight to lose so thought it would hopefully have the added side effect of weight loss.. i've now only 5lbs to go btw and just started wk5. What i have noticed is more of a change in my body shape than weight loss.. my double chin and bottom has gone, thighs are a LOT slimmer and tummy n midrif less wobbly and flatter.. btw up till 5wks ago i struggled with running for 60secs!

TheNextMrsDepp · 22/07/2010 18:07

Hiya MABS. My reasons for starting this were mainly weight loss, to be honest. I wasn't overweight as such, but SO out of shape with about half a stone of flab around my midriff. I had been in denial for ages, until I put on a pair of shorts and a bikini top back in May and dh went . He's not the type to ever be critical, so I knew something had to be done!

I had fancied running for ages, but never knew where to start. I have always been unsporty. The turning point was reading about C25k on MN actually - there was a thread very similar to this one last year and I was totally inspired to give it a go.

I have also cut out carbs (well, the stodge at least) and the weight just dropped off. I am now 9 stone 5 (5 foot 7), lighter than I have been since the early-90s; my waist and backside have shrunk and my legs are much more defined. I have lost 10+ pounds in 9 weeks (but diet is probably most of that).

The fitness thing is a fringe benefit, but I know it's doing me good and I'm so proud of myself!

MABS · 22/07/2010 19:14

thanks so much so that info, you are all very inspiring ladies.

Mrs Depp, we sound v similar, i around 10st at mo, nearly 5ft 8,all around my tum is the fat, but i was 9 stone a year ago. i desperately want to drop 10lbs ish. Bought trainers today and ran 20 mins on treadmill, t'is a start!

kiwibella · 22/07/2010 21:59

bought trainers and ran 20 mins you are a star MABS!!! You will lose that excess weight in no time.

great running nobiggy - as your name says... it's no biggy, take your time and you will get there .

MABS · 22/07/2010 22:16

only day one tho !! thanks for encouragement

nobiggy · 22/07/2010 22:41

Aw thanks, Kiwibella. I'm having a tired day today I think. I'll have another go on Saturday, before I head off to The Proms

TheNextMrsDepp · 22/07/2010 23:52

MABS 20 minutes straight off! Some of us took weeks to get that far!

sybilfaulty · 23/07/2010 07:59

Can I join please?

I swim 1.5 miles twice a week but am still about a stone overweight. All the people who run near me seem to be tiny so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I have a day away from my DCs today so am off to TK Max for some shorts. Have huge knockers and a huge sports bra (32H). Have old trainers but will only buy new if I keep it up. Do I need anything else?

First run Sunday. Will download Robert to go with me. Terrified.

MABS · 23/07/2010 17:31

did 25mins today, will do gym class tomorrow i think

FiByTheIcySea · 23/07/2010 22:54

sybilfaulty hello :-) and welcome. I too am of the huge boobage you'll be fine just give it a go!
MABS wow great going!
I did wk5run2 tonight.. you know the one with the 2 x 8min runs. I managed it but it was hard going towards the end of the 2nd 8min run especially as i had to run with the wind blowing quite strongly in my face for that one.

nobiggy · 24/07/2010 07:37

Just got in from w2r3. Did all the runs today, the full 90s. Feeling a bit flat tbh, I want this to be easier.

Logged the run on my iPhone, and although overall it's slow (average 3.97mph over the 30 mins), all the runs are over 4mph, and there's a clear difference in speed between walking and running. It has felt as if there isn't much difference, just more effort.

At that speed, it is more efficient to walk, but it's not the distance, it's the doing!

Well done all you runners. I'm feeling a difference in what I can do other than running, so it must be having a positive effect, even though the run itself is hard.

MABS · 24/07/2010 08:43

totally relate re the boob thing, 32f, but i just do up the sport bra very tite and hope for the best !

TheNextMrsDepp · 25/07/2010 21:57

Well, I couldn't hold out any longer and went for a run this morning. DD1 (who's nine) came along to show me up encourage me. I just did 20 minutes as I didn't want to overstress my knee, but it has been hurting ever since, so I'm really annoyed that I didn't leave it longer. Grr....Looks like another week of resting.

(DD1 got a stitch though, and I didn't ).

kiwibella · 26/07/2010 11:44

MrsDepp, I'm having trouble with my knees too . I guess resting is the best thing for them? They particularly hurt when changing between walking / running and when going up / down my stairs

I ran week 2 on Saturday and planned to go out again this morning. I have no idea how to keep this up with dds home over the summer. Hubs is unreliable at being home.

Interesting thoughts about distance nobiggy - I've always fancied running so that's why I'm giving it a go. I didn't achieve it the last time Altho, I did train for the moonwalk (26 miles) two years ago and lost two dress sizes from walking!!! Running feels faster .
