loler and mrsdepp re:the flies - this is why most runners and cyclists wear sunglasses (as I eventually discovered!) - nothing to do with the sun!

re: flies in mouth - no idea - I breathed one in on a run and end up puking as a result -

Wilts · 05/07/2010 20:40

Well done everyone, not faced the fly problem yet, probably as I am yet to run outside

I now can't run until I have been to the Dr, both knees have seized right up and I am having to take ibuprofen just to get some movement

The problem knee thing couldn't have come at a worse time as it is my graduation tomorrow, and I have visions of me not being able to get up the abbey steps when they call my name

N4NNY · 07/07/2010 21:12

Ive not been able to run since sunday got a stinking cold and now a cough gutted hopefully can get back to it at the weekend

wohmum · 07/07/2010 21:54

I did day 1 of week 2 yesterday, and found the first one pretty hard going. Surprised at how much lomger it felt!
However, I did manage to complete the session so it can't have been that bad!

Day 2 , week 2 tomorrow!

TheNextMrsDepp · 07/07/2010 23:58

wilts - what a nightmare! Hope the graduation went OK. I'm surprised about the knee problems because running on treadmills is supposed to be much kinder to joints, but really hope it gets better soon.
N4NNY - snap, I've had a cold too - I felt rotten all weekend, typical! Not helped by inhaling half a bonfire on Saturday night. Take a break and look after yourself.
wohmum - yay! You did it! You'll have no trouble managing the rest of the week, I'm sure.

Hope the rest of you are managing OK.....

Well, I did run 2 of week 7 this morning, tried Suz's 90s Hip Hop podcast, which was pretty good. I do seem to hit a "wall" between 12 and 18 minutes when I really feel I can't go on. I have spent a lifetime "giving up" whenever I got out of breath or it started to hurt, and it is such a new experience forcing myself past that. By the time I get to 20 minutes or so I'm fine again, but I do need to find some new ways of dealing with that middle section of the run. Do any of you who've done longer runs have any strategies??

tiredemma · 08/07/2010 07:04

hello again-

I am now running 3.2 miles three times a week. I found a route around our local park and have been doing this. It was hard- and I must admit that once I get about 15 mins in, I really feel like walking but I just get my head down and run on!!

Did it last night in 31 mins.

I cant believe that just 6 weeks ago I struggled to run for 3 mins. Amazing.

Wilts · 08/07/2010 09:46

Went to the Dr yesterday, I have damaged the ligaments in my right knee and have also hurt my left knee.

I am on anti- inflammatories for two weeks, then back to see if I will need physio

Dh thinks this is really amusing as he is in training for our half marathon and there is me only week two in and running on a treadmill

I am not sure what to do when this clears up as I am in so much pain,I am loath to risk doing it again.

Well done everyone!

nobiggy · 08/07/2010 12:03

Haven't read through the thread - sorry - but I did w1r1 on Monday, running in a figure of 8 round the garden (yes, really), tried w1r2 this morning round a lake. This stuff about not being out of breath, is that for real? Because I'm breathing hard almost as soon as I start and gasping by the end of the minute (which is now 55s long btw).

notanidea · 08/07/2010 21:39

Sorry to heart that wilts. Hope you get better.
I cant go out for the last few days due to work commitment. Hoping to run week5 day2 tomorrow.

wohmum · 08/07/2010 22:31

Week 2, day 2 complete!

Definitely easier than day 1.

Well done nobiggy, it really will get easier and running round a lake sounds far nicer and easier than the garden( unless you've got a very big one)!

I may be a bit stuck next week - my OH is away with work for 2 weeks so it will be hard to get out unless I go efore the kids wake up, so that means 6.15 am start!

Plus , we've got a fundraising week at work and we've been volunteered to do a 5k run/walk as a team, shame its not in another 6 weeks time!

I haven' t let on that I'm doing C25K so will be planning to walk it!

If anyone fancies sponsoring me , its for a charity called Get Connected and I'll post my just giving link here when it's all sorted.

We should raise a fair amount as there are about 40 of us and we're all being targeted to raise £100 each so any little will help!

loler · 08/07/2010 23:04

Nobiggy - it really does get easier - I can now run for 5 minutes without stopping (go extremely red but don't stop!), keep with the programme! (and I do get out of breathe and there is no way that I would be able to hold a conversation)

woh - I'm stuck this week too - managed to squeeze week 4, run 2 in between picking up dc but not going to do another one until after weekend. Is it wierd to book a babysitter so I can go for a run (although wouldn't be able to get inside without the neighbours seeing as she is a neighbour)

Running 3 miles in 30 mins is amazing - that really is running not jogging!

Flies still a problem - tried the sunglasses thing but they bounced around a bit and were too annoying - still planning on a full face shield.

loler · 08/07/2010 23:05

Wilts - hope you get better soon, maybe a physio could give you advice on running too?

notanidea · 10/07/2010 22:49

Run the second day of week 5- 2 8minute runs but seemed to have amanged it well.Due for the big 20minutes run next time around. I do think this will be a big break and will boost your confidence a lot if you can manage it.Lets see I am a bit apprehensive though.

TheNextMrsDepp · 11/07/2010 12:05

Well done notanidea. eight minutes feels like serious running, doesn't it? You'll be fine for the "big 20", I actually found it easier keeping going rather than stopping for a walk then starting again.

What is it about those pesky husbands who keep going away and messing up the running schedules, eh? Mine has no passport at the moment which has curtailed his travel somewhat - ha!

N4NNY · 11/07/2010 12:49

I started my 10k training today I've had a week off due to my cold so was expecting to only manage half of it but I completed it all without too much trouble.

5 min warm up followed by 4 10 min runs with 1 min walk in-between. Then a 5 min walk cool down.

hobbittoes · 11/07/2010 20:08

hi N4NNY , what programme are you using for 10k? - just about to start myself.

N4NNY · 11/07/2010 20:25

I;m using B210k on the iphone its the follow on from C25k. I was very surprised at being able to run for an extra 10 mins even though it was seperated by 1 min walks (the walking went very fast)

nobiggy · 11/07/2010 21:20

Did my 3rd W1 today, slowed it down a little, used the tongue on the roof of the mouth method for breathing in through the nose (whose idea was that? It worked!)

Progress, just through the week. I think I'll do week one again, see if I feel ready to move on after that.

loler · 12/07/2010 09:02

How inspiring is this thread! - it's an anything is possible thread.

Have just done my last week 4 run due to start 5 but pesky dh done a runner again - I've just treated myself to some proper running kit and a new sports bra too so am dying to try it out (no more saggy leggings and 90s band t-shirts!). The big 20 though is making me feel a bit sick - looking forward to hearing how it goes MrsD.

What's the tongue of roof of mouth method of breathing - must have missed that - sounds a good way of avoiding flies in teeth/on tonsils.

nobiggy · 12/07/2010 09:44

I don't know if it would do that, but it certainly helps with the panting (which is probably shallow breathing anyway, thinking about it). It sort of enforces the breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth thing. So, tongue to the roof of the mouth while breathing in, then tongue down when breathing out. Seems to give a deeper breath, and better breathing rhythm.

Someone up-thread came up with it. I think I've waited 40 years for this nugget!

wocka · 12/07/2010 13:29

Hi,

Can I join this thread?

I started W1 last week. I went out Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and found it very hard going and came back with a bright red face each time.

I don't want to take it too quickly and end up giving up when it gets too hard and so have decided to repeat week 1. My next run is due tomorrow so hopefully the rain will have gone by then.

nobiggy · 12/07/2010 21:26

Wocka! Me too! I feel it should be easier to run the minute before moving on. I get a red face from thinking hard mind you...

TheNextMrsDepp · 12/07/2010 21:34

Hi there wocka, keep it up, you are doing the right thing in pacing yourself, although I would say this programme has an uncanny ability to make you do something you never imagined you could....

Loler - I love this thread too, seems like I've droned on posted more than most, but it has really helped. When I'm struggling to keep going I think "can't give up, what would my fellow MN runners say?" Also, I have kept this whole running thing very quiet from my friends, as I have always had a reputation as a bit of an exercise-dodger and didn't want to try, then fail, in public view as such. And I've no wish to join a running club, or do a 5K race, as this is just for me, and I don't want to be measured against anyone else (after a lifetime of coming last in all competetive sports activities)

So you guys are my outlet!!! And I'm so chuffed to hear about everyone else making a success of it too.

I ran 28 minutes this morning (1st run of week 8), despite feeling very stiff from strenuous dance-floor moves on Saturday night (actually fell off the dance-floor at some point). I am now considering myself a "runner" so I'm going to splash out on gait analysis and proper shoes. Woohoo, spending opportunity!

notanidea · 13/07/2010 07:34

I hvent read the recent posts as I have been working the weekene and starting to work early today. Well Done Mrs Depp-28minutes.you deserve a new gear certainly. Idont have any regrets getting shoes it is well worth it. Welcome abroad everyone. Mrs Depp what happens in week 6. I did my first 20minutes week 5 day 3 - I am really chuffed.

wohmum · 13/07/2010 07:41

Morning all, It's great to hear that the later weeks are doable!
I did wk 3 day1 this morning, yes, got up at 6am just to go for a run!!
Blimey, OH will never believe it when he gets back!

I almost chickened out and wk 2 again, thinking I'd never do running for 3 mins, but I did and it was not too bad at all! Still can't imagine running for 8 or 20 though so you ladies are a real inspiration .

Roll on thursday!
