Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

18k this morning in 1hr 45. Very speedy for me. The downside was that it poured most of the way round and I was wearing a very thin, transparent white top.

Three weeks to go til the Big Day. If anyone has a spare bob or two feel free to donate it to my mad people. They are really very needy.

Popsy, you were being missed on another thread.

Twink, cheers. I'm going to use the Twink family for inspiration up the hills.

Not long now for you....

MoshiMoshi · 07/06/2010 16:18

Hello lovely ladies! Back from half term holiday spent in the sunshine. My first holiday in two years and I really benefitted from it, especially after losing dad at Christmas. I have a smile back on my face and everything seems rosier again. Hurrah!

While I had a lovely holiday with a break from cooking, cleaning and the kids (there was a kids' club and creche!), I stupidly managed to pull a calf muscle doing circuits so thwarted my efforts to use the gym every day. That was really annoying as I don't belong to a gym and was looking forward to working out indoors with all the equipment. So I am off activity for another week at least I think letting my leg recover. ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!

master - well done on both the speedy run and the risque nature in which you ran in ! Will certainly donate something to help motivate you.

twink - the site looks wonderful. We are still trying to work out a date for my dad's interment. Mum wants the local cemetary although I wonder if she will move one day in the near future, leaving dad behind which will seem a bit odd. Perhaps I should just leave her to make her mind up and go along with it. I don't mind where he goes as he is where I need him most, in my heart.

orm - your progress sounds terrific! I know how depressing it is thinking about where you should have been but it is best to just look at where you were not so long ago, resigned to not running at all and now you are regularly running a decent distance. Keep the runs small and just build up more slowly as my mistake is to bang out extra mileage way too soon considering my tendency to injure myself. When I started, I just ran 5km daily and kept to that for months before changing route and adding more miles (I started running 7.5 miles to work instead of going to the treadmill in the gym). While some say I could have varied my training a bit more earlier on, what I did manage to do was really get a decent base and my body used to a regular 15-20 miles a week before increasing it to 45 miles a week. Looking back it was very helpful and I am going to keep the runs short to build up strength and technique.

Sorry not read back very far but will do so to try and catch up with your news.

Happy running and stay injury-free (says she with the tendonitis, dodgy hamstring and now calf muscle!)

Twink · 07/06/2010 22:08

Ouch Moshi!

Master, I used your comment about us to inspire my hills today, Not posted recently as running has taken a back seat during halfterm.. Who ever decided to put the race to coincide the toughest training week with HT obviously isn't a parent, or at least not a single one!

HT consisted of cross training: climbing/kayaking/swimming/climbing/Go Ape..

Did 60k on bike yesterday, hills feeling a lot easier now (honest Saggars!), then 10k run today followed by an hour of tough gym work. Mega swim session tomorrow, including the dreaded open water one but then will start easing down - our gym manager banned my planned hill session on Thursday, steady and shorter for the next 10 days, I'll be climbing the walls ! Oops, I already do!

How are the rest of you getting on? This thread has been fairly quiet lately, so report!

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2010 06:41

Right that is it, I'm off out now to run up a few hills, instead of languishing on the computer.

popsycal · 08/06/2010 14:35

girls - i am considering taking a proper break from mn. will of course let you know what i decide to do

Moshi - sorry about the injury, but really pleased you had a good holiday, you derserved it.

Twink - do you ever stop???

popsy - you have to do what you have to do, but don't forget we will still be here if you need us.

Didn't run for 2 and a half weeks due to snotty cold, being away, and having guests, but went out for 4 miles last night fearing the worst. Actually it was fine and reasonably fast so am getting back ont he horse!

liath · 08/06/2010 16:35

I love running in the rain .

Well, in the summer, anyway....

Wow, Twink! Impressive stuff.

Popsy, sorry you're thinking of leaving.

Hope everyone is doing well including the sore bits.

hatwoman · 09/06/2010 09:16

hi all. master - I have a non-running question to ask you. sorry if I've remembered your location wrong, but I have a feeling it's kenya...in which case do you know anything about travel between nairobi and kampala? are there any decent airlines (I am quite a nervous flier) and/or is it do-able by train or bus (which is almost certainly less safe than plane but I'm not logical about this...)

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/06/2010 11:31

Yes Hattie you are right, I'm in Kenya.

Are you coming to town? I'm presuming you are doing Nairobi AND Kampala rather than just Kla. Yes you can fly with Kenya Airways, between the two cities, a good international airline, nothing to worry about. I'd say about 3 flights a day. There are other airlines that we are happy to use also, but Kenya Airways is the biggest.

Train - hahahahahaha . Perhaps if you were in the 1940's maybe.

And yes there are good buses doing the route between the two but it is WAY more dangerous to go by bus than plane. The road is hellishly busy, nightmare driving, border crossing which is tedious. Plane is def the best bet.

When are you coming?

hatwoman · 09/06/2010 11:43

thanks Master. it's all rather speculative...I'm thinking of bidding for some work that would involve a (short) trip to both. but it's proving a bit complicated to put the bid together. The project is woefully under-resourced, it would seem, and my potential partners are questioning whether it's worth bidding for. and then even if we do bid there's no guarantee we'd get it - probably not as we think it needs a lot more money than the client...I might know more this afternoon.

glad to hear you like Kenya Airlines. I took an internal flight on Egypt Air not so long ago which proved terrifying - just about to land and the pilot changed his mind, slammed the thrust on full, and took us back up again. never bothered to tell us why (my theory is that he over-shot the runway) so the intervening 20 minutes were somewhat scary. all very British, nervous, and non-panicky but basically, underneath it all it was clear everyone on the flight was kacking themselves. I told a friend who works for BA and she laughed and said she would never take an internal flight on Egypt Air.

hatwoman · 09/06/2010 17:09

well that was all rather short-lived. decided not to bid for it, for various reasons. shame - I would have liked a wee trip to Africa.

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/06/2010 17:26

Shame, I was getting excited too.

Who do you work for? Or perhaps you'd rather not say on here.

hatwoman · 09/06/2010 18:46

I do consultancy work for NGOs - the project in question was an evaluation of some work a big-name international ngo has done with some national ngos - in 5 countries in w and e africa. one of the main problems is that they wanted lots of the work (including the travel)done in the summer holidays - just not feasible for me.

hatwoman · 09/06/2010 22:18

sorry for shouting but I JUST WON A PRIZE!!! ok so rumour has it that I was the only entrant in my class but still! It was my own village's fell race today and they give prizes for first local male and female. It was such a great race - on so many levels - I knew most of the marshalls and lots of people in the pub afterwards. kids were there too (mine and some friends' kids). just made me feel all warm and gooey - we moved here 18 months ago - potentially just for 2 years - but being here feels so right. what a great night.

liath · 09/06/2010 22:46

Ooh, well done Hatwoman. Sounds like a fab day all round.

Twink · 09/06/2010 23:31

Wahey! Well done that Hat!!

A prize is a prize, be proud
xx

Twink · 10/06/2010 07:21

I've finally taken the plunge and put together my fundraising page for my race next week. I know times are tough, but if any of you could manage to sponsor me I'd be delighted.

Twink's Page

peachsmuggler · 10/06/2010 08:58

Well done Hatwoman, that's brilliant!

Master and Twink - have just donated, good luck to you both!!!

Wheelybug · 10/06/2010 17:57

Thanks for the watch info SFX !

NOt much going on here - last week I did 3 x 5K during half term but late in evening and hot and found it hard even though I've been running further. Felt v. despondent. Should habve been back in the gym tuesday but dd1 was ill so didn't and couldn't be arsed to go out once DH back. Did a 12K walk today and will be in gym tomorrow and run at w/e but on a bit of a running downer at the mo but guess these things happen.

Well done on the prize HW ! And good luck with the training M&M and Twink - not long now.

Popsy - sorry you feel you might have to go.

MoshiMoshi · 10/06/2010 19:23

hat - congratulations! And to think you were wondering about whether your running days were numbered not that long ago. Well done and I am pleased that you have had such a great boost!

popsy - I am curious (so ignore me if you think I am overstepping the mark), why is it necessary to leave? It would be a shame to lose you here. You have always been a part of this virtual running club! The joy of the internet is that you can pop in when you please surely...?

Goldberry · 11/06/2010 08:17

Congratulations hatwoman! Shouting definitely justified. I'm feeling really positive after my running group session on Tuesday - not only did the instructor say she was impressed that I always really push myself, she also asked the group how many of them would like the group to continue after the 10 week course is up. Almost everyone said yes, so it looks like it will carry on. I'm finding it so motivating, running with other people, I was not looking forward to it finishing.
On the down side, although I seem to have increased my speed a bit, I have trouble increasing my stamina. Find it hard to run for much more than half an hour, which could prove tricky for my 1st 10k in September! My legs are always fine, it's my cardio-vascular fitness which isn't enough. The instructor rather apologetically pointed out that it's because I'm carrying a little too much weight . This I know, but I seem to have hit a plateau with losing weight. Must try harder!

fishie · 11/06/2010 09:03

goldberry i got stuck on 7k for ages. just plug on and try to add another 5 mins.

hello everyone else. i am enjoying cooler and yet summery weather. although have terrible white feet / brown leg / shorts tan line issues.
