good luck twink. am sitting here drinking coffee in running kit waiting for rain to pass....

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/12/2009 13:46

Good luck Twink! And good luck Girls too

Twink · 06/12/2009 14:10

Girls, how did it go?

Ours was a quagmire (think swishy Saggars..) but the organisers kindly put the 3 stream crossings at the end instead of the beginning!! I'm aching already with the effort of pulling my feet out of such thick mud.

fishie · 06/12/2009 15:59

well done twink, hope it went well girls.

my it was muddy out there today, i stopped to tiptoe gingerly through a particularly nasty bit and FELL OVER FLAT. soft landing at least but i had to wait at pelican crossing just afterwards and people in cars were looking aghast.

girlsyearapart · 06/12/2009 17:18

well I did it

wasn't too bad.

mega rain before but it stopped just before and stayed dry all the way round.

some mega hills but I carried on.

oh Fishie the shame

OrmIrian · 06/12/2009 17:35

OK I have been so lazy recently. Some kind person tell me what I need to do for Mr Twink please. Is it a formal race I have to take part in, or can I just pledge to do a certain distance on a certain day. Have been a bit detached recently but would like to do my bit.

I ran about 5 miles on Friday but haven't had any time to run regularly for a month. Nothing to do with the weather, oh no....

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/12/2009 19:08

You just have to pledge how ever far you feel like doing, Orm. Off you pop, on your own to do your bit on either 27/28 March....

How's your dad?

Great effort from you ladies. I am strictly a fair weather runner, thank god I live in the tropics

at poor fishie. A fishie indeed.

OrmIrian · 06/12/2009 19:16

Dad is fine thanks M&M. Out of hospital already and getting better day by day. A bloody miracle is was it is

I will let you all know what I will pledge when I get back to running. Probably 10m or maybe 13 if I can get up to speed. ATM 5 miles is my limit.

19fran76 · 06/12/2009 19:18

I would like to pledge an eight mile run if this fits in o.k.

girlsyearapart · 07/12/2009 12:11

Good news Orm

My hips are a bit achy today but nothing too bad as I wsa expecting.

TutTutter · 07/12/2009 14:26

well done everyone for the pledges. i'll be there in spirit

ok, 2010 goals:

march: reading half marathon
april: london marathon
sept: GNR

once i've done (touch wood) the marathon i plan to drop back to regular 10ks plus the occasional longer one. i think i'll find the long winter training runs hard

christmas list - i have already requested a high-viz gilet and i'm hoping for a beanie, new sports bras and lots of socks

managed a 10 miler in shocking conditions this morning. if i carry on running by the river i may well develop trench foot...

peachsmuggler · 07/12/2009 21:00

Are there any long runners here who are not training for anything specific at the moment?

I have no races lined up but am running 3 times a week and have built up to 12 miles for my long run. However, am not sure how much further I want to do, especially as it is pretty time consuming. I would like to do 13 miles either next weekend or week after and then will be not running for 2 weeks as away for xmas, but not sure what to do after that.

What do you all do for long runs? How far do you go? Do you just keep running further and further each week or stick to the same max distance?

MoshiMoshi · 07/12/2009 21:23

Super running, laydees. Whoever said running is for fair weather obviously never reckoned on the MN squad! Have decided must have a plan in mind post-Christmas to up the mileage. That, and fit in regular trips to the physiotherapist to keep the tendonitis/ITBFS and anything else that occurs at bay ! Oh, to be a 20-something again.

hatwoman · 07/12/2009 23:01

peach - the first time I built up to a longer distance was when I'd entered a 16 mile race. I went out 3 times a week and built my long run gradually - something along the lines of adding a mile every 2/3 weeks - upto 14. I only did 14 once, I think, and found the 16 mile race a killer - swore blind I'd never run so far again in my life . then for the marathon I followed a schedule - went out 4 and sometimes 5 times a week - once in the mid-teens I think the schedule jumped about a bit - sometimes adding 2 miles, sometimes staying the same. I'd take a look at some training schedules - even if you haven't entered anything - they'll give you an idea of how much to increase. It has to said that I've noticed frequency of shorter runs and the overall time over which I've been running consistently makes a difference for me re how easy I find it to add on more miles. If I take it easy for a couple of weeks (by which I mean only do 1 or 2 short runs) I don't feel any different but suddenly that 10 miles feels a whole lot harder.

OrmIrian · 08/12/2009 13:08

peach - that is exactly what I do (or I do when I am running regularly). 3 runs a week - 5/6 miles 2 times, one longer 10/12 mile at weekends. I am not training for anything. I just enjoy it. TBH I look on my long runs as a chance to go on a lovely walk at a fast enough pace that it doesn't take too long

OS map and Google maps are my motivation. I plan my routes according to the places I like.

girlsyearapart · 08/12/2009 13:10

Need cheering up please.

Got the time e mail from my 15k.

Aiming for under 2 hours (I know that is super slow by lots of standards on here)

my time was 2 hours 36 seconds boo hoo boo hoo boo hoo.

If only I'd sprinted a bit further/not detoured to throw my drink carton in a bin not on the floor(like everyone else)/not changed my song on ipod/whatver else took extra 37 seconds.

Arrggh.

Me + running = this is war!

MoshiMoshi · 08/12/2009 14:04

girls - I can only sympathise but remind yourself that 9mph is still jolly good and not to be sniffed at!

Wheelybug · 08/12/2009 16:14

ooh girls that's really annoying. But well done - the main thing is you did it !! And those hills are awful...

I think I'm going to have to down grade my pledge to 5K definitely (or 7.5 if that fits !!). The creche in the gym is shut all of January (as well as the two weeks christmas hols) so I won't be able to run much at all during this 6 weeks so I don't think I'll be up to 10K by March.

My aims for 2010 is to get up to 10K. I wanted to do this before dd2 was 1 but don't think I will due to the above.

I have asked for lots of running kit for christmas and the Hurakami's boob (have also bought it for one of my friends).

peachsmuggler · 08/12/2009 19:37

girls - Aww, it's annoyoing huh? However you've still done really well so don't beat yourself up about a few seconds!

Hatwoman - Thanks! I will have a look at some training schedules and have a think.

Orm - good idea about different routes. Like the idea of keeping it under 2 hours so maybe, like you say, do 10/12.

Read that Andrew Marr runs 3 times a week for 8 miles and wondered how he doesn't get bored...

MoshiMoshi · 08/12/2009 20:16

Orm - I recall you had tendonitis a while ago. Has it since passed? I ask because mine seems to have made a sudden comeback which is really annoying. Pootering along with a double buggy doesn't seem to aggravate it much but I went for a buggy run with just the baby and went slightly (emphasise "slightly") faster and, oh my word, I could feel a sudden twinge again! A bit depressed at the thought of having to take time off if I can't sort it out... Any tips on how to avoid it much appreciated.

girlsyearapart · 09/12/2009 06:46

i consider myself cheered thankyou

wheely- shall we do it together in the park- not that evil hill though!

OrmIrian · 09/12/2009 10:05

moshi - yes it has thanks. Still get the odd twinge but nothing serious. Haven't been running much since my dad was ill so I think that gave it a chance to heal.

MrsWednesday · 09/12/2009 18:50

girlsyearapart, I think 2 hours is v impressive, and you should be pleased you were so close to your target!

Peach, I found that my main motivation for longer runs comes from having races to train for, although after my last half (and before I got injured) I started enjoying doing 8-10 miles on a weekend. It was in the summer though - I used to vary my routes and just enjoyed plodding round the local area.

As soon as DH gets home I'm going to force myself out for a couple of miles - need to more miles in my legs before I try to go back to my running club. How do you all motivate yourself when it's dark and cold? Is it just mind over matter?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/12/2009 21:02

Swishy is fun Twink. Hope you're doing OK.

I'll pledge for the MN race - 8k is a good distance for me.
