Master just waiting for CD-Rs and will cat you when I have made the CD. Anyone else?

fishie · 17/11/2009 12:31

hooray my back is better. went for a very exhilarating but dreadfully windy 5k to test it on sat, i was not actually moving forward at all at one stage.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2009 13:37

Tut, 10k on a treadmill is fantastic, I doubt I could do it, my patience is thin as it is. How long does it take for you to do 10k?

fishie glad your back is better.

I went the gym last night and struggled to do 5k but this morning my period has started so that is probably why. I always sleep poorly before I am due on so that makes everything harder work.

GooseyLoosey · 17/11/2009 13:52

Hi fanny - lapsed a little this week although went out for a 10k run last night. Think I need someone driven to make sure I don't fall off the wagon!

What are your long term aims with running or do you just do it because you like it?

fannybanjo · 17/11/2009 14:13

Hi Goosey, I am nearly falling asleep by the computer! Had a terrible nights sleep last night, the cows who live in a field near us where mooing all flaming night! DH said they were talking to me, I think that was a slight dig...

Long term running wise I would like to be entering a half marathon within a year or so but in the short term will just plod along as it is pretty hard to get out to train when I have the 3 girls and DH is self-employed and has 2 gundogs so has his commitments as well. I am going to start going out again running at the weekend and stick to the gym in the week. What are your aims? I was probably being a bit optimistic saying I would spur you on!

TutTutter · 17/11/2009 18:04

fanny, i've been doing 10k in around 50 mins on a treadmill. outside i can do it in

popsycal · 17/11/2009 20:27

cow

fannybanjo · 17/11/2009 20:28

Tut so do you run at speeds of around 12k an hour? That is really good 10k in 50 mins!

I am trying to get my treadmill speed up to 11.5k an hour non-stop but it is proving quite hard at the moment. Before I had my DC I would run at 12-12.5k an hour, I have no idea now where I got the strength and I suppose I was only in my mid-twenties! I am doing it in intervals of running at 11.5k for 3 minutes and jogging at 8.5k for 1.5 minutes. Hopefully in a few weeks I will be able to do the full run at 11.5kmph.

Twink · 18/11/2009 08:20

What a fortnight! Thanks for missing me and hello to all the new people; this thread seems to have grown enormously while I've been gone.

[Unfortunately my absence has been mainly down to problems with Mr T but we're battling on. Had a consultant appointment at the end of half term which didn't go well: chemo hadn't stopped the spread; although we were pleased as it had dramatically reduced the speed of spread, and frankly, without it he'd have beeen dead by now but the consultant was quite negative. Unfortunately, he's also got a couple of nasty side effects due to longterm chemo, one of which is big blood clots on his lungs which explains the breathing difficulties he's been having. Hence the chemo has been pulled and we're on a waiting game now. You'll laugh though, I got a physio friend to come round to give him some exercises to do in bed to try to stem the muscle wastage he's got from high steriod doses so despite not being able to get to the gym, he's still trying hard ]

In between times I'm trying to get out. Fortunately he's delighted I've entered the Half Ironman and is keen that I get a good training base in before Christmas. Managed to ride 28 miles Sun, gym session Mon including the dreaded treadmill intervals, 16k/h with 10k/h recovery, 5 mile run yesterday followed by a swimming lesson and I'm about to go for swim practice once the district nurse arrives this morning then get another run in while miniT is at Brownies tonight. Hopefully I'll sleep well!

Hat, your fell challenge sounds awesome, I'd love to do something like that in the future.

Definitely looking like a day to blow the cobwebs away around here, enjoy your day everyone

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/11/2009 07:05

Twink . What an amazing training schedule, for both of you .

girlsyearapart · 19/11/2009 07:35

Twink - sending health vibes your way. Sounds so stressful. Running v good for clearing the cobwebs though isn't it? What you need when the going gets tough at home I think..

Went to see a friend yesterday who had her first dc 2 months ago. She entered Reading half marathon but discovered she was pg and deferred to this year.

She convinced me to enter... HALF a MARATHON gulp.

It's in March and as we're trying for our third baby I may be pregnant by March.

Hasn't happened this month though so the most I could be by Martch is 3-4 months. Still do able do you lot think?

Twink · 19/11/2009 08:06

Cheers

Girls, Reading is a good half to do; there's a decent flat section before the first hill so you're well warmed up, then there's only really one other hill worth mentioning and although steep, it's very short. There's an incline up into the Mad Stad at the end but by then you can hear the crowd support so it's fine. As far as running when pregnant goes, there are loads of people on here who have done (I didn't start until post-miniT). The usual advice seems to be that if you already run then it's ok to continue. I'm sure someone else more knowledgable will be along shortly. You're already doing a decent distance so you'll have no problem getting up to 21k by March and it'll motivate you to get out during Jan & Feb

peachsmuggler · 19/11/2009 17:58

Hi girls - Reading was my first (snd only so far!) half marathon. I agree it is a good one to do as it is mainly flat. In saying that, I made a bit of a mess of it and felt exhausted the whole way round, but was just an off day I think.

I started training in January for it (having been running 2 or 3 times a week, and up to 6 miles) and felt pretty ready for it when it got to the day.

Guess you can see how you feel if you do get pregnant. You could always defer if you were.

Good luck!

TutTutter · 19/11/2009 22:00

hi twink

i'll be doing the reading half too - in fact i must remember to register

stickylittlefingers · 20/11/2009 09:23

Twink - fantastic and humbling how you and MrT are handling all that.

Any GNRunners of last year - are you or have you in the past done this "booking" of a place for the next three years?

girlsyearapart · 20/11/2009 14:55

Glad to hear good things about the Reading half thanks ladies!
did a 6k ish run yesterday which was fine so feeling optimistic.
Hoping to keep up with the training but winter is hard ..

Wheelybug · 20/11/2009 19:43

Hello all

Twink - thinking of you. Am in awe of you keeping going with the training in the circumstances but hope it helps you think of something else once in a while.

Girls - good luck with the reading half. My bro is doing it in March so I may be there to cheer on (although actually I think we may be skiing ...)

Not had a good running week - gym session on tuesday I had calf pain and ended up on the cross trainer. Didn't go today as my parents are staying so meant to get out to run but had too much to do. Hopefully get a run outside on sunday...

Twink · 20/11/2009 20:34

The more you run in grotty weather, the more you get used to it so stick at and eventually you'll come to love it - honest!

Managed a swift 4 miler on Wed evening, then climbed yesterday. Had a tough spin class this morning, by the end there seemed to be only me, one of the regular blokes and the instructor still hanging on, the rest were trashed!

MiniT and me are having our swine flu vacs tomorrow, so Sunday's mountain bike race looks a bit daunting, still I've got to go cos Mum's coming to do family-care! Must admit to being a bit unsure about them but we've no real option, if I get ill with anything, life will be a tad tricky and the accompanying risk to Mr T is completely unacceptable so fingers crossed that we have a mild/no reaction!

Hat, have you considered OMM? A friend rang me to see if I'd consider doing it with her next year and as it coincides with our wedding anniversary, I think it'll be a good plan as distraction therapy...

girlsyearapart · 21/11/2009 07:47

I felt ok after swine flu vacc just sore arm at the end of the day and the next day.

soyabean · 21/11/2009 16:11

Master I cat'd you so will send you Cd once I have your address.

Have run 3 times this week although never very far. 30 mins/5k on treadmill, then run in park 2o mins with 2 colleagues - but it was good as one of them pushed us to run faster up a hill and then up and down some steps - the kind of thing I never can do myself! Then 5k in the park today.

A friend suggested the Moonwalk next year but I thinbk if I am getting sponsors I can only ask once and wd rather do the 10k race for life again. (and dont fancy walking around in my bra even with 1000s of others, tbh!)

MarshaBrady · 21/11/2009 19:40

Has anyone ventured into running with a pram and little baby?

Is this madness, is it safe, will I look like a nutter?

Which pram did you use, bugaboo ok?

thanks!

peachsmuggler · 21/11/2009 23:44

Hi Marsha- I run a little bit with a pram at my powerprammming class but don't feel too comfortable with it back-wise as have a mclaren. Was better with the Jane Powertrack, but even then, not ideal. Am sure someone on here must have a bugaboo and can advise!

Can I ask a question about food ladies? Did 11 miles today. Was first time I've done that distance since my half in march and it was fine, and was actually faster than my normal easy slow long weekend runs. Well 10 min miles, which is fast for me, though maybe not to some of you road runners. Beep beep!

Had a croissant and coffee in morning (healthy!) and then went running at 2 and took a sports drink with me. Felt ok during run but shaky and felt sick after (which is how I felt after the half). Anyway, must stop wittering, point is what and when do you all eat before long runs. Don't want to eat too much, but need to eat enough.

Any ideas?

Oh, and meant to say. Twink - you are awesome. More power to you and your family.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/11/2009 16:28

Sorry to read things are a bit grim with dh Twink. dd had her swine flu jab this week and had a bit of a sore arm that's all. Hope you and MiniT get away with nothing more than that.

Not been able to post much but have been getting out. Really need to get out of my comfort zone.

Hello to all the newbies. This has really grown hasn't it? - I remember when it was me and Twink and a couple of others. It's great.

TutTutter · 22/11/2009 17:48

marsha i believe it's not recommended to run with a bugaboo. i didn't. the front wheels are so titchy it's easy for them to get stuck in a rut/hole and tip the buggy over

i used to see a postnatal personal trainer and he said there was only one buggy he would recommend for running - will see if i can jog my memory with a spot of googling if you like

fast walking with a buggy is normally enough to raise your heartrate to a good level, esp if you can find the odd hill to push up
