Hi everyone - it's rather busy round here! great. tutter brilliant news on the marathon - you'll love it - it was the best thing I've ever done. I was on a high for weeks afterwards. I've been letting the running slip a bit...so decided I needed a definite challenge to work towards. made the decision last night. I'm entering a race called the Edale Skyline (if they'll have me) in March. It's 22 miles and 4500 feet of ascent. The route is unmarked so you have to navigate too - making your way to about 6 checkpoints. I've been wondering about whether I'm brave enough but decided I would regret not going for it. I've got a couple of friends who are vaguely interested - I think I should persuade them.

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 13:35

Welcome back in that case Tutter ! (You probaby don't remember me but you were once nice to me on a thread whilst I was in the middle of a m/c so you stick in my mind !!)

Good luck with that run Hat - sounds challenging !

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2009 13:56

Fanny, would love to run a virtual marathon with you. Err... how does one do that?

The race in Edale sounds amazing. Its one of my favourite places on earth.

hatwoman · 11/11/2009 14:13

just filled the entry form in. very scarey: "owing to the severity of this event (distance, terrain and possible winter conditions) it is strongly recommended that only experienced fell runners should consider taking part" only started this fell running lark this year. And have never really had to navigate. has to be said ifthe weather is truly foul on the day I might chicken out be sensible and retire.

peachsmuggler · 11/11/2009 14:17

Yes, I am pretty hill-sensitive too Goosey, though the hill trainights helps.

As fanny says, if you need to stick to the same routes then do some fartlek, which is running faster between certain objects (you decide) and then recovery jog inbetween.

fanny - am also thinking ahead to the splurgefest that is xmas. Should be at my target weight in a week or so (may even be now but don't have any scales here) so will be starting maintenance diet soon, and slightly worried about xmas. I know I won't be able to avoid toblerone for breakfast and wine for lunch. Hic, oops!

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/11/2009 14:19

Tutter, welcome back But you are too fast for me, go join Popsy please she'll give you a race for your money. Who are you running for at the VLM?

Welcome other newbies.

I run 3-4 times a week, schedule (and rain) allowing. This morning I did hill training for the first time ever. I ran to the hill, went up it hard, down it easy and repeated 4 times at which point I was quite wobbly. I then ran easy home. How long should you beast yourself run up and down for? I did it 4 times, so aim to do it 6 times next week. Is that the sort of way to do it?

I'm still not quite sure either how to do intervals when I am either going up a hill or down one.

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 14:31

hatwoman you must be crazeeee!

Goosey PMSL - I mean find a training schedule and bolster each other on! Anyone know of some training schedules to get from doing 5K to 10K? It would have to be done on the treadmill for me as it is just too dangerous to go running at night around here. No pavements or lights. It would be like The Blair Witch Project!

peach Its only once a year, we shouldn't worry too much. I don't find I got too mad. I have been known to do a run on Christmas morning though, this was before 3 children came along though, I am not that mean! "Here's your pressies kids, mummy's off for a run so she doesn't get a fat arse!"

themaster I used to do a lot of hill running when I lived in North Wales. It was a killer but it gets your AMAZINGLY fit. Not as hilly in Cheshire. Maybe alternate between doing one run where you do the faster run UP the hill and recover going down and then do the opposite on your next run?

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 14:35

I am finding that joining this thread is renewing my vigour for running.

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 16:34

tmam, am running for the childrens society

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 17:02

Had an awful hour with all 3 DDs screaming the house down DH just come in from a day out dog training so I have unceremoniously dumped them on him in the kitchen and got my gym stuff on. I am off out to the gym for a bit of R & R! I have no idea how long I will do on the treadmill but I am aiming to do 6k tonight. Lets see how I get on...

stickylittlefingers · 11/11/2009 17:57

fanny - hello - I recommend the Bupa site - got me from 1 1/2 miles to 13 miles in nice easy stages - I had time to do a bit of the 10k and then moved on to the half marathon.

Sigh - not much running happening here, tho. Family and weather and darkness and stuff. Hopefully this weekend will be better for getting outside. Absolutely hate treadmills - too unco-ordited

hatwoman that sounds terrifying - but would be great to have done it...

All I'm signed up to do is a 5k Santa run at the moment! Tho I have a 10k in mind... Must run more, preserve sanity etc

soyabean · 11/11/2009 21:30

Hi everyone
SLF (like your name!)I know what you mean about treadmills - was on one today and I find it quite scary, not to mention hot and sweaty compared to being outside. I have only used the gym a few times, but it fits in with ds' activity at leisure centre so is handy and a better use of my time than just watching him do taekwondo! Gets me out of work on time too.

I try to run 3x per week, 2x 5k and 1x 10k. I am trying to speed myself up but not really having much success. But I certainly find it easier than I used to. 5k is easy now and 10k perfectly manageable, its just having the will power to keep going!

Tutter and hatwoman, wow! Scary but fantastic... you are both brave

Fanny is that standard practice re replacing shoes after 300 miles? I guess I have done quite a lot more than that but they don't look too worn on the soles. How often do you guys buy new shoes?

Idris, Master, Peach, anyone else, if you wd like a CD of my playlist just say and I will send you one. I have ordered some CDRs. I would love any of the ones posted if they are on offer - variety always a Good Thing.

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 22:23

Hi sticky and soyabean! I will have a look at the BUPA site. Thank you!

Treadmills are horrendous BUT I do find they get my fitness up as I "push" myself a bit more as I can see exactly how far I have gone whereas when I am outdoors I can dawdle a little bit. I was told that shoes do need to be replaced every few hundred miles but if you are doing on average 10/12 miles a week, they would last you a year. I replace mine once a year anyway as they lose their springiness.

I went the gym before and did 5.5k in 30 mins so quite a good time for me considering I was exhausted. Cooled down with 5 mins on the bike and then did the Versaclimber for 5 mins, now that is hard work!

soyabean · 12/11/2009 12:20

Oh that is good Fanny, I did 6k in 40 mins on treadmill yesterday, not so good...

Well I have had my shoes for about 2 years so perhaps a new pair wd put a spring in my step. MAy have to have them for Xmas...

SLF what's a Santa run?!

fannybanjo · 12/11/2009 12:54

6k in 40 mins is good, soya, don't bring yourself down, a lot of people couldn't do that.

I am going to ask for new trainers for christmas as well, feel a bit of a saddo but hey ho!

peachsmuggler · 12/11/2009 13:37

I've heard anything between 300 and 700 miles for replacing shoes. I am going to go with 500 miles, as with holidays, injuries etc, this works out as about a year for me.

I had terrible hip pain when training for a half marathon in March and as soon as I got new shoes, it dissapeared!

Got speed training tonight at my running club. And it's supposed to be pissing down

GooseyLoosey · 12/11/2009 14:00

Fanny, a training schedule would be fab. I'm approaching this a bit like a headless chicken so anything a bit more structured and target based would be fab. Also worry that it won't take much for me to give up,so a group effort might drive me on.

hatwoman · 12/11/2009 15:13

well - no getting out of it now, 2 friends and a friend-of-a-friend are doing it too...we make a bit of motley crew. one hardened fell runner (did a Bob Graham this summer - 72 miles ); my mountain-goat esque fell running partner - very quick but has never run more than 10 miles and can only train twice a week; her partner (as in the dp sense) - keen runner but been out of action for 9 months after a knee op; and me. I can't quite believe that not only am I doing this stuff, but since moving up here in Jan I've made friends stupid enough to do it too. something in the water perhaps.

soyabean · 12/11/2009 17:32

well thanks Fanny but I know I cd do it in 35 and wish I could push myself a bit harder. I really like to run alone though so it has to be me that pushes, rather than anyone else! Actually I enjoyed running witht a friend for the race for life but at weekends etc i really like to be alone - part oof the therapy!

girlsyearapart · 12/11/2009 17:55

hi all- well i didn't do that 10k last sunday as with the kidney infection just hadn't trained.

Got an e mail apologising for the cock up with the chip timing though so sounded like a bit of a fiasco.

Got the 15k on dec 6th and ran for first time in a fortnight on Monday did about 5k.

was going to go tonight but it's POURING.
