Goosey don't try to go hell for leather though, you will do an injury, like we said, just do it in intervals. I either do the lamppost way or jog for a min then run fast for 2 mins and carry that on for the rest of my run. This is not something I am doing as much at the moment as I don't have the time to concentrate on my training as much as I once did but if I was wanting to up my pace as I had reached a plateau then that is what I would do.

daftpunk - of course she can join!

daftpunk · 11/11/2009 11:04

thanks...

have linked you ....

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:10

hello all

am back (was ackshewerly only here once before, briefly)

have a place to run in the london marathon so have to start taking it all seriously

am trying to run 3 x a week atm. this week will be 2 x 7 miles plus one 10 miler

NOT looking forward to winter running. need to stock up on winter gear - anyone recommend a good site for reduced kit? have used startfitness and wiggle before

wheresmypaddle · 11/11/2009 11:10

Hi everyone, am new on this thread but desperate to get fitter and firm up wobbly bits!! Hope you don't mind me joining in? I don't have much free time so thought running would be ideal as all I have to do is step outside my door and off I go.

Used to run a lot in my teens, but that was a long, long time ago. I have a couple of questions that I am hoping you could help me with, sorry if they are obvious but its been a long time......

How long do you recommend between eating and running? I can only realistically fit a run in in the evenings, ideally after we (DP, DS & I) have eaten (I realise I should keep my meal small). If I run before my evening meal it would mean eating on my own after I get back, which is OK occasionally but I am hoping not to disrupt the the 'family meal' thing.

Also, any tips to reduce risk of shin splints? I used to suffer terribly and even now when I ocassionally play tennis or so something active, I can feel that shin pain the following day.

cruisemum1 · 11/11/2009 11:14

hello all - I'm new! daftpunk linked me to you - thanks daftpunk . did my first jog today - nearly killed me. Found i couldn't even run two comsecutive minutes without being in pain . I am not overweight, not idle but i have learned i am definitely UNFIT! Your advice and support please

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 11:16

Hi Tut, WOW London Marathon, I bow to you! I would love to do it but not yet, have to be realistic about what I can do! I don't buy any kit online, I go to the Nike Factory outlet in Cheshire Oaks near me but I am sure some of the other girls will help.

Hi wheresmypaddle - again, girls will help with advice but heres my twopence:

Eating - I really wouldn't be able to do a run after my evening meal, I would have a banana about an hour/half hour before or a small snack and then have evening meal later on BUT if you are wanting to keep the family together, why don't you just eat half of your meal with the family and then reheat the other half after your run?

Shin splints, I would go to a specialist running shop and get them to assess your running style and they will advise you on the current running shoe. I used to get shin splints when I did longer runs and it was because my footwear wasn't right. I wear Asics trainers now, they suit me the best but you are best getting advice.

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:18

baby steps, cruisemum

work on completing the distance - whatever that may be - however you have to do it. if it means one minute jog, one minute walk, then so be it. you'll feel fitter quickly, i promise

in march i could only manage 5k, slowly. by june i did a 10k in 48 mins. i can now run a half-marathon in 1hr 48mins

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:25

Welcome everyone.

Cruisemum - have you seen the couch to 5K programme ? I started on it Jan 08 when I started running and was up to 5K by March, 10K by June and had got to about 7.25 miles in early july when I finally got pg and took to my couch ! I started it again in August this year and am now back to running 5K (and a little bit more). It starts off with intervals of run 1 min, walk 90 secs. There is a thread on MN with people doing it, which I found v. helpful. Will see if I can find some links for you.

wheresmypaddle · 11/11/2009 11:27

Thanks FB. I am probably being unrealistic about running after evening meal. Maybe to start with I can fit it in before we eat as realistically I will only manage 10 mins max!!

Roughly how much would you expect to pay for a shoe from specialist shop?? Am on a bit of a budget, but if I get shin splints again I think I will struggle to get out running.

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:28

bow to me once i've actually done it, wmp

this will be my last chance to do it before i'm 40, so thought i'd go for it

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:30

Basic plan - www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Podcasts www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/index.html

I now see there is an Iphone application if you have one and there's a facebook page (mutters.. in my day...)

MN thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/5321/850257-Can-39-t-believe-I-am-suggesting-this-AGAIN-anyone. Not that you have to leave this one but helpful to have people doing same as you as well.

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:31

agree that i'd try to run before eating evening meal, wmp, even if it means eating later than your dp and dc

if you're on a budget, i'd go to a specialist shop, get their recommendation and go home and order a pair online. cheeky, but you won't be the first to do it. you can usually get last year's model of a show for a lot less than the current RRP. my shoes are >£100 but i bought two pairs for £60 each recently, by getting a slightly older model (a different colour, basically)

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 11:32

Paddle - They are not as expensive as you think. I paid around £50 for mine. They do say your trainers only last around 300 miles but I don't take any notice of that.

Tut, I bow to you for even entering it! It is my dream to run the New York marathon but something that will never happen. Who knows though!

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:32

FannyBanjo - you will note I am ignoring your post about getting pg wiht dd3 when dd2 was 8 months old (). You must be applauded for getting out and running at all - its hard enough with 2 (and 1 being a baby).

wheresmypaddle · 11/11/2009 11:34

TT am bowing as we speak......

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:35

and good luck with the marathon training Tutter . I am aiming for the marathon - originally was aiming for 2012 because dd2 would have been in pre-school for 6 months but only for a few mornings so now realistically I think 2013 with GNR 2012 (not that I am really wishing my life away but need an aim, albeit v. long term !)

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 11:35

LOL Wheely! I hadn't noticed! DD3 was a HUGEEEEEEE shock to us so be careful!

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:36

yy - you have to be able to set aside the time to train. i can only do this now as ds1 has just started school and ds2 just started nursery a couple of mornings a week

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 11:38

Agree with Tut, you need to have in your mind when you are going to do it and just GET out there. I always tried to go every other day and make sure if not, it was 3 times a week. I am not as obsessive now but I know in time, I will be. Once DD2 starts pre-school in March, I will be able to put DD3 in the creche for an hour or so.

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 11:39

wheely, 2012 should be OK if you're starting from a reasonable level of fitness/preparation. i only have two mornings a week free. on top of that i do use the gym creche once a week, but i don't have a lot of time tbh. have committed to NOT running at the weekend so i have a clear conscience wrt family stuff

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:43

TutTutter - if you don't mind me asking, are you 'Tutter' of old ??? Just being nosey.

Wheelybug · 11/11/2009 11:44

I think I'll see how I go over the next couple of years. I had grand plans of GNR next year but have accept with only 2 1 hour gym sessions (including dropping dd2 in the creche and picking up) a week and a run at weekends I'm not going to get there. BUt, I might increase them if I can to 1.5 hours but I find running on the treadmill the dullest thing in the world ever so not sure I'll manage to run longer.

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2009 11:53

How quickly do you think you can go from nothing to running marathons? One of the things that keeps me going is dreaming of running a marathon faster than my uber competitive male colleague. Not terribly realistic, but it would be great.

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 12:36

Goosey, you can do anything if you put your mind you it AND do the correct training and as long as you don't get any injuries I will say that you would be looking at doing a marathon in a year to 18 months but that is if you are putting a good training schedule together and you are realistic and committed to it. - shall we do one together! Virtually that is, unless you live in Chester!

TutTutter · 11/11/2009 12:48

wheely, yes, tis i, tutter
