Gosh fanny I am impressed you can raise your head off the pillow with 3 children, never mind out running about. I would give youself a break and don't worry about how long it takes to get back to 10 miles. Your DD is still quite little. The more I think about it the more I believe that pregnancy is a massive strain on our bodies, so we shouldn't be surprised that we don't just bounce back.

Welcome goosey too! Don't worry, I know where you are coming from but believe me if you build up your milegae really slowly, you'll soon be finding 10k a doddle.

All this talk of shorts is making me feel cold. Am going to investigate running tights next week as am currently wearing 3/4 length summer trouser things which are far too big and start falling down when I run.

fannybanjo · 10/11/2009 14:20

Wheelybug, you could be me! Although I am now onto DD3 (I was pg with her when DD2 was 8 months old so you could be next!). I suppose we should be proud that with our busy lives we make the effort. I always put too much pressure on myself though.

I am hoping to get out to the gym tonight but DH very busy today and he has got someone coming to collect a vehicle later so I doubt I will manage it. I miss going for a run but I just can't seem to muster us the strength in the winter and my gym membership is going to waste so need to use that.

Anyone else do interval training? I find it is great way to get your speed up, especially on the treadmill.

fannybanjo · 10/11/2009 14:29

peach - it is hard having 3 but not as hard as it could be, my two little ones are angels at the moment (just sitting eating cheese on toast while I am on here) and are very chilled. I am waiting for the shit to hit the fan when DD3 starts crawling more! DD1 (7) at school so not too bad all in all in the fanny household!

I need some running tights, my Nike ones are falling down. I bought them in a large (although I was only a size 10) and they are huge on me now and have had an embarrassing episode at the gym last week where the man behind had a wonderful view of my thong!

peachsmuggler · 10/11/2009 15:42

ha ha fanny! Nice!

Your little family sounds lovely!

I am a small size 10 but with fat thighs (tights and leggings always feel tight in me) and am 5.5. Can you tell me what size of running tights I should get? Was going to get them ont he internet so won't be able to try them on. Is the size related more to the length or the girth, so to speak! I have very short legs.

fannybanjo · 10/11/2009 16:17

send me a link peach and I will see what I would get, i too am a small size 10, 5ft 6 and quite short legs. Probably a small or medium.

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/11/2009 16:26

peachy I am a size 8/10, 5,4 with thunder thighs. I have Adidas running tights Clima 365 size 10 and oh boy they were difficult to get into. I now have Adidas Supernova running (tight) shorts in a 12 and can breathe easy.

peachsmuggler · 10/11/2009 17:29

Haven't tracked down a pair yet fanny but will send you link when I do. Ta for the info though!

master - This is what I was thinking. I think a 12 would be better (given that they are tight anyway) but am worried about the length on tights. My thighs are very fat and flabby, rather than thick and muscular if you see what I mean, so am wondering if I can "pour" myself into a size 10, rather like a pair of spanx....not sure if this is how it works!

morethanyoubargainfor · 10/11/2009 17:32

hello everyone,

You lot are making me with all your sizes! add your sizes together and you get me! .

Haven't been out since saturday as i have another strange illness, just the same as last time i went.

I felt fine on saturday woke up sunday morning with a very chesty cough and snot from every orophis (sp!).

what am i doing wrong? or is it all the years of smoking that has done irreperable damage?

fannybanjo · 10/11/2009 18:12

Sorry morethan that you are feeling unwell. How long since you last smoked? I am not a medical professional but if hasn't been long and you have started exercising, it could be that your lungs are getting rid of all the crap out of them as they are being pushed. I am an ex-smoker (10-15 a day for roughly 7 years) and I went through a spell of chest infections when I gave up but it wore off and I haven't had one since. Well done for packing in, I know it isn't easy. Don't exercise when you feel ill whatever you do though.

morethanyoubargainfor · 10/11/2009 19:28

fanny thanks, gave up smoking 7.6 years ago, but i did smkoe around 40-50 a day for about 8 years . I did however smoke for a total of 11 years.

I have always exercised but never ran before. I don't know what it is.

Although i do know that 2 years ago, when i was nursing in the local hopsital i was always used for trainig new staff as i used to run on 93-94% sats which is basically the level of oxygen! If any of our patients were below 95% we had to put them on o2. Maybe i have permenant damage?

It is so frustrating i love running and want to do more of it.

fishie · 10/11/2009 19:42

adidas are well stingy on the size side. i like them though, nice and solid.

physio says i have a squished disc thing so must leave off running for a little while. and pull my lower stomach in for the rest of my life, which i suppose is not the worst thing.

GooseyLoosey · 10/11/2009 20:18

Can I ask how many times a week you all run on average? I am thinking I should try and do more - I run about 4 times a week.

morethanyoubargainfor · 10/11/2009 20:37

i run about 3-4 times a week but walk and cycle about everywhere.

19fran76 · 10/11/2009 20:39

I am 5'6', size 10 with what can politely be described as sturdy legs & I love my Adidas running tights which are size small.

I was running 4 times a week whilst still on maternity leave & for me that was plenty, enough to be improving without exhausting myself. Now I have two definite times each week I will be going for a run & as soon as the baby is through with the latest teething bout I will add another 1-2 early morning runs. Right now I need to chase sleep more

19fran76 · 10/11/2009 20:53

P.S. I'm wearing the star with pride

Hello & welcome to new posters. Those of you with several babies to love are being far too hard on yourselves, if you're out & about running you're setting a fine example to me for one. Inspiration for the future, when perhaps I may have more than one DC myself

peachsmuggler · 10/11/2009 21:06

50 a day morethan!!!! Where did you get the time for exercise, or were you smoking while you exercised? Seriously though, snotty orifices and chesty coughs - doesn't sound very condusive to running. Hope you feel better soon.

fishie that sounds painful. You poor thing.

Goosey - 3 times a week

Re. tights. Am thinking I really need to go a and try some on.

Did 4 miles tonight in 36 mins, which is my fastest time ever. Am putting it down to sick-making hill training last week and the extreme cold, which made me run fast to heat up!

GooseyLoosey · 10/11/2009 21:41

You all seem to be saying 3-4 times a week. My intention was to run 5-6 times a week, but somehow something gets in the way or I am too tired.

I want to be massively fitter than I am (and of course lose weight) and don't have time for any other exercise. Do you think its too tiring running 5-6 times a week?

All so new at this, that I'm just making it up as I'm going a long.

fishie · 10/11/2009 21:53

goosey i try to run 5x shorter rather than 3x long. my body prefers. but it is really hard to manage unless you can get it in before bed or first thing - neither of which are possible for me.

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2009 08:18

I am trying to run in the evening after I get home from work and have put the dcs to bed. I am finding it very hard to motivate myself when its cold and wet.

peachsmuggler · 11/11/2009 08:24

What runs do you do Goosey in terms of length and type?

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2009 08:53

Well as its always dark I'm a bit limited as to type. I run 5k twice a week and 10k twice a week and that is about all the variation there is. Do you think I should be changing things about more? I have read that changing the pace of running is good, but at the moment fear I might collapse into a heap if I tried this.

peachsmuggler · 11/11/2009 08:59

I would say stick to 3-4 times a week but make one of your 5ks slightly brisker pace than normal and make another one of them either interval of hill training. It should get you fitter faster than just adding more runs.

fannybanjo · 11/11/2009 10:46

I agree with peach Goosey, your mileage is fine for now especially as you are a newish runner but definitely change your route and interval training is excellent. Even if you run from lamppost to lamppost and just up your speed every other one. Saves you having to time yourself.

I didn't manage to get out last night as DH was working until 8.30pm so tonight it will have to be the gym. I need to refocus on my diet as well, I can feel love handles creeping back on as haven't done much exercise over the past month and been drinking more wine. Especially with Christmas coming up. Although I don't know why I worry, my life seems to exist entirely around this house atm. Hard with 2 under 2.2 to get out somedays, especially by the time I am ready and sorted, it is time to collect DD1 from school.

GooseyLoosey · 11/11/2009 10:48

Thanks! Might try doing one faster (will probably explode). Can't do hill training as its dark and I live in the country side so am limited to certain roads and lanes.

I was surprised how much you notice the gradient when you are running. Even a slight incline makes a difference. I think I know the gradient of every lane within several miles of our house now.

daftpunk · 11/11/2009 10:50
