Well done Idris!

I came, I ran, I survived. 2 hrs 10 I think, including a pee stop. Twink I am to say you and dh were my inspiration for the last km.

Am just at the IL, will be back later with full post match debrief.

soyabean · 25/10/2009 12:23

Hi all
Lovely morning for a run here - autumn sun and leaves, and hardly anyone out and about at 830 cos of the clocks going back. Its my birthday and I am aware that it is a sign of my advanced age that a run appeals more than a lie -in! Anyway did 10k ish in under an hour so am happy with myself.

JJ · 25/10/2009 14:06

Congrats Idris! I have just gotten back into using the Nike+ thing after a couple of years off. I find it very, erm, inspiring, I suppose. I share my runs with my training partner and husband and don't want them to see any walking! So it keeps me going.

Wow, themaster. I still can't quite imagine running for that long but am training towards it.

soya, happy birthday to you!

I have a very sore heel and a bunion. I think my new-ish shoes (a few weeks old) are not quite right for me, sob. Have started in on the bupa half marathon training plan (thanks again, popsy!) but will need to repeat weeks in the middle because it's still quite a ways away.

Does anyone have any opinions as to which is better: Fleet half marathon or Adidas half marathon? I will be running as a beginning half marathoner.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/10/2009 17:44

I have a very sore knee today.

I have to say the whole experience was amazing. There were a lot of people running and the weather was pretty cool. At one point I was running through a torrential tropical downpour! The first 5k was a bit slow going as everyone got into their stride. There were many people running with barely anything on their feet, some not even official participants, handmade wheelchairs, people from all different walks of life. The elite runners and marathon runners were just awesome, imagine running alongside (well for a nano second anyway!) some of the world's fastest athletes. I found it quite easy to keep going, though my knee started hurting at around 11k, I just ran through the pain. I'll wait to see what the official time is, but I was delighted with 2hrs 10.

JJ I'm sure you will be up to 2hours in no time.

fishie · 26/10/2009 21:52

happy birthday soyabean

twink hope you are bearing up. ironman sounds fearsome.

master well done, what a great time it sounds (both literal and metaph.)

i have lower back spasm. it may mean need new shoes but what if i spend £70 and it still hurts?

Wallace · 27/10/2009 12:03

Well done master

Happy birthday, soay

popsycal · 27/10/2009 18:07

well doneto all theracers

I have had a running drought in the last fewweeks - I have been ill, then the boys have too (hospital stint for ds2), dark nights etc etc

anyway
dh had aday off tody so I dragged myself out. Put an old playliston the ipod which i havent ;istened to for months. Planned5 mileseasy.

At 2 miles it started to drizzle and since i hadnt brought thewaterproof what sit for the ipod, I decided to stick it down my top and complete the 2nd of 3 loops shorter incase of a downpour. I love running in the rain but my ipod doesnt.

Anyway, the heavy rain held off. At 5k, the loop passed my front door and I very nearly head home but then Stone Roses came on folloed by a bit of Primal Scream followed by a bit og Happy Mondays followed by INXS. I was transported to the 6th form common room and 1st year at uin and happily ran with my sentimental thoughts.

I forgot about my ipod obsessive checking until it beeped for 4 miles and heard thetime which was fast for me

So I decided to up the effort and completeed 5 miles in 46:12 with lenty more left in thebag. Knocked almost 3 mins off my bestt previouosly recorded 5 bmiles and could go faster. Very chuffed

I have a 10k a week on Sunday and it my frst 'running-clubby-type' event. I have barely trained since GNR. I will be fuine but secretly want sub 55 mins.

My layered targets (teacher-speak) are:

  • to not be last
  • to run faster than last 10k race(GNR 10k in July 57:17)
  • sub 55 mins
OrmIrian · 27/10/2009 19:58

At last!

I am beginning to get it back! Did 5 miles tonight - the first mile had to stop and walk briefly twice but after that running with no stops. So exhilarating.

Hu-bloody-ray!

Wallace · 28/10/2009 06:30

pops - sorry to hear you've been ill - all fine now? Glad you had a nice run

Orm - Hooray

peachsmuggler · 28/10/2009 20:39

popsy and orm - yayyy! Good to have you back.

Missed long weekend run as was in Casualty with DD (nothing too traumatic thankfully). 4 miles on Monday, then have had a bad back. Am trying to rest it as really want to do my running club tomorrow night so am lying on sofa, very flat while DP makes dinner. Reaaaaly don't want to miss running tomorrow but must be sensible and not run if back is not right

popsycal · 29/10/2009 12:11

made the most of ds1 and 2 being out forthe night and had a fab speedy 2 mileloop at 7:20 this morning. freezing cold, clear skies - loovely:
just under 17 mins - am getting faster

hatwoman · 29/10/2009 19:00

INXS and 6th form common room...you must be about teh same age as me popsy (off to dig out my inxs cd...damn they were good....)

never tear us apart....

hatwoman · 29/10/2009 19:09

it would appear I don;t have an INXS cd. I was convionced I did. having to make do with the Water Boys. still rather marvellous.

eee they don't make music like they used to do they?

popsycal · 29/10/2009 19:47

hatwoman

I have a bit of duran duran and a-ha on too

I am very sad as I know 'Take on me' can get me running under 8:30/mile so stick it on when I am flagging.

I am nearer 40 than 30 now. But only just

peachsmuggler · 30/10/2009 10:39

Really flipped off with sore back. Missed my running club last night, and can't see me running at all this weekend as back still sore. Will have to be patient, but is very frustrating.

Hurumph

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 30/10/2009 18:53

Popsy and Hattie, I'm of an era too. I'm quite to say I have A-ha too on my running list. What did i hear on the radio the other day that I wish I had? Ace of Base or Soul II Soul, one of those ones.

Peachy sorry to hear about your back, I hope it sorts itself soon.

I popped out 5k this morning 2 mins under my usual time. I have decided I need to stop being so lazy, if Popsy can go so damn fast, after 3 dc and nearing 40, then I can jolly well try to work as hard as she does.

popsycal · 30/10/2009 19:46

I am not nearing forty......
just slighyl the wrong side of 35......only just

I am 35 and a half

I am planning a nice long run. well. Not sure actually.

I have my 'running-clubby' 10k next Sunday. Do I really need to taper?!!?

MoshiMoshi · 30/10/2009 20:57

Arrrrgh. Damn these half terms which completely stuff the running! It is amazing how I can feel as if the post-natal lard is shifting when running regularly and then a two week stint off seems to make me feel as if I am back to square one... Shedding the fat for the fourth time seems much harder than the previous times. I don't actually think I made any real effort the first two times and the third time around I definitely had lost all but half a stone by this time. Is it my age??? I am now 36 and not getting any younger so I need to do something about it as I have a whole wardrobe (in a very small size 6-8!) which I cannot wear sadly
:-(

popsy - I wouldn't bother tapering for a 10K but you may want to have a rest or an easy day beforehand just to make sure you are not knackered on the day or suffering from any aches or pains!

fishie · 30/10/2009 21:03

peach i have had the back too this week. re-buggered it getting new running shoes. went for a 5k shuffle today, dreadful.

blur - on your own will always get me running faster.

fishie · 30/10/2009 21:07

popsy i wouldn't call myself wonder runner but aim for 50k a week working more or less full time. can't see how you'd break yourself aiming for a 10k running club jaunt.

popsycal · 30/10/2009 21:11

cool

my aim for a nice 9miler at the weekend then

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 30/10/2009 21:13

hello. do you guys mind if i join you? everyone was really kind getting me started again and i've been out twice this week. was going to start off gently but i'd like to go again tomorrow - does that sound like too much too soon? (not run for 3 months, had worked up from c25k to 20-25k/wk before that)

MoshiMoshi · 30/10/2009 21:24

stake - ooh, I am a great believer in going with how you feel so go for it but obviously not too long or hard as you are just getting back into it. Happy running!
