Or even hang!

JJ · 17/10/2009 08:34

Thanks. I am going to take it easy today and then, if I do poorly in the race, will use it as an excuse for my terrible time .

saggar, condolences to you. And my eldest started secondary; I thought that was stressful! Nothing compared to him moving away but I can't even begin to think about that right now.

I know the thrill of new running socks. My son keeps stealing mine, so I might have to get new ones soon. I hope they worked out for you, Themaster.

Yes, agree that running keeps me sane. Popsy, I have an old (very old) three wheeler in my cellar. I don't know if it's in great good decent nick, but you're welcome to it. I'm in Hackney.

I'm off to download 4 minutes!

Wallace · 17/10/2009 09:21

I found www.remanents.com/blog/best-running-music-ever/ but it takes you to US itunes not UK so will have to do it manually.

I have a wardrobe issue for tomorrow:

Usually I would just run in mt running T-shirt and lightweight jacket which I take off and tie round my waist if I need to.

However we have just got club running vests which of course I want to wear. The problem is I am a bit worried it might chafe - never having worn it before.

It doesn't really seem to "go" over my usual runningtop. I could wear it over my new long sleeved compression top (whci I have also never worn) but I am worried I might be a bit warm and also I need the pocket of my jacket to carry energy gels in.

Help what do I do!

sfxmum · 17/10/2009 09:30

Hello everyone
Saggar sorry about your dfil. My ds1 is applying for uni etc at the moment, luckily he seems to be in control of it but i ccan imagine it will be sad and stressful when he actually goes...
Popsy sorry you are not well.
sfx I love indiesoup, was getting so bored of my own running mix (even though it is full of songs I used to love).
Moshi my kids are older but I still find it hard to run in the week as by the time i get in at 6 ish I feel I should be getting on with food rather than running out the door. (dh works evenings)I can go at the weekend but am trying to go at least once mid week, otherwise Saturday is hard work! I have strated to go to the gym on Weds eve when ds2 is at the leisure centre anyway but have been fioled by having to stay at work late, or gym being closed, etc etc many times.
having said that I ran 5k on Thurs and 4k last night. Then had backache this morning so drank coffee and read the paper instead. As long as my back is OK I am planning to do 10k tomorrow morning.

Wallace · 18/10/2009 06:12

sfx - the compression top is only from Aldi so don't know how good it will be. I'll let you know

Today I'm going for the vest with my jacket over it. Haven't checked to weather yet, mind you...

popsycal · 18/10/2009 10:19

was out walking awith ds3 before 9 and it is a gorgeous winters day
good look wallace

i am going to try a very very gentle jog later as i am feeling a bit better

will of course be wearing new winter trousers, compression top, socks and head band thing

soyabean · 18/10/2009 14:36

Morning all. Ran about 9k today, lovely and sunny here, lots of leaves on the ground and hordes of people in the park. Enjoyed Indie Soup and wished I had stuck with knee length trousers and short sleeved T as I got a bit hot in long trousers and long sleeves... but feel much better for having done it, with only less than half a minute walk (before my big hill). (Probably not big for those of you that do real X country type runs but quite hard work for me).
I have two parents' evenings at school this week and a concert at ds1 and dd's school too so there's no chance I will get out for a run . But should manage a few in half term, yippee.

Wallace · 18/10/2009 16:07

I did it somewhere between 2h 3 mins and 4 mins.

I set off to fast, but I wanted to see if I could push myself. I was doing less than 9 minute miles

Not surprisingly I was a bit knackered after that and slowed down to 10 minute miles at the four mile marker. It was also really warm and sunny (yes this is Aviemore in October!) and I was finding it hard going.

After about an hour running it began to cloud over and I got back into the swing of things.

Not long after that it started to rain and that was fantastic - cooled me down and I was raring to go for the last 4 or 5 miles and went back to 9 minute miles

I am a bit sore now but have loosened up since i walked the dog

Wallace · 18/10/2009 16:09

Meant to say my time is at least 10 minutes faster than last year

IdrisTheDragon · 18/10/2009 16:11

Well done Wallace

I too now have a long sleeved running top from Aldi.

Haven't run since last Sunday though - normally run when DD is at pre-school but have had lots of other things to do this week. Am going to put my running clothes on tomorrow to take children to school and then run

popsycal · 18/10/2009 19:00

well done to everyone who has ran today - especially wallce with her '10 minsless than last time' time.

Ididnt get out today -bnut had a lovely walk in the woods with dh and the boys and had a lovely homecooked sunday dinner too - must must must run tomorrow

OrmIrian · 18/10/2009 19:01

10 miles. Very slow. And bugger me but everything hurts

popsycal · 18/10/2009 19:02

am in awe of your 10 miles orm

hatwoman · 18/10/2009 19:13

hi there everyone. I have a question for you. How do you think that a very fit, quick runner would cope with a 3-hour run, when she's never done more than 10 miles/1hr 40 in the past?

The 3 hours would be tough and hilly (normal story!) - as are all this person's runs. It's hard to say what distance it would involve (it's an event when it's basically a competition to see how far you can go in 3 hours). Given the terrain I am guessing about 18-20 miles.

what do you think?

the person in question isn;t me btw, it's my fast fell-running short-medium distance friend. I'm just intrigued as to what it will be like. wondering whether the distance might even us out (but fearing not!)

hatwoman · 18/10/2009 19:14

actually - more like 18 max.

popsycal · 18/10/2009 19:34

ok hatwoman
when I did GNR, my furthest run before was 10 miles done in just under 1:40. I did half marathon in 2:09 and really puhed myself - I could have kept running had I not really gone for it. I reckon I could have done 3 hours.....my BIL did smug grin

popsycal · 18/10/2009 19:34

oh and Iam not 'very' fit but had trained well for the event

JJ · 18/10/2009 19:59

Wow Wallace, that's great! I'm definitely inspired by the half marathons and 10mile runs... especially the fact they're hilly. It's pretty flat around here.

Popsy, what do you use to train? My running partner and I are doing a half marathon in March and are planning to use the Runners' World training plan.

We did our first 10k today. I kept up with her (barely) and had a personal best* of 1 hour and 3 minutes. So slow, but not embarrassingly so, at least for me! It was a lot of fun.

*It was a pb because it's the only we've done, of course.

peachsmuggler · 18/10/2009 20:00

Yayyy. Well done Wallace, that's a brilliant time. Was LOL at you running in just t-shirt and jacket, and wondering what the other runners woudl think

Did 9 miles yesterday in 93 mins which is my fastest time for that distance (actually have only run it 4 times but hey) and feel like I have finally got to a place where I am finding it all ok and not too hard, so in theory if I oushed myself and was in race situation could have done better.

Starting my running class on Thursday so really looking forward to that.

ooh, must go. X factor on!

Happy running y'all

hatwoman · 18/10/2009 20:06

you see - for me there was a huge leap (metaphorical, obviously!) at around 16 miles. the first time I did 16 was in a race - so I;d been training for it - and I swore blind I'd never run such a distance again. The second time I did 16 was when I was training for the marathon and it nearly killed me. my friend says that when she did 10 (and she's only done it once) she felt like she could keep going forever. I felt like that too the first time I did 10 - but found the reality of 16 so much harder than I ever thought. but then again I did do it.

peachsmuggler · 18/10/2009 20:11

16 seems unthinkable to me at the moment. Don't your legs feel like lead?

hatwoman · 18/10/2009 21:04

I feel "ground down". I feel like my body is collapsing downwards, getting compressed. It feel as if, in the process of being squished downards, all the soft cushiony-stuff in my joints has been squeezed out so that bone is grinding on bone. So my ankles, my knees, my hips are, well, just grinding against each other. the lead feeling, for me, doesn;t come until I've stopped.

I did read once that you lose (temporarily, I assume) an inch or two in height when you run a marathon. so I think my grinding feeling is probably not wholly unreflective of the reality.

oh what fun and games

IdrisTheDragon · 18/10/2009 21:07

I can't imagine ever going as far as 10 miles, but given that 6 months ago I wouldn't have thought I could "easily" go 5k maybe it will happen one day.

Had to at bit at marathon runners losing height permanently - was wondering what would happen to people who run a lot of marathons .
