girls sounds pretty awful to be left hanging with a diagnosis, the sort of things whihc would drive me mad and into further googling madness
makes you think just how important support services are and how woefully underfunded they are

Well done Idris and hatwoman - that looks awesome (in the proper sense of the word)

Welocme RosieMac

Well I got my rejection magazine so no London Marathon for me. A bit disappointed, but not too much seing as I've decided 2011 would be better.

Went for last long run before Half today. 11miles, it was nice, but a bit tired this afternoon.

Wheelybug · 05/10/2009 16:03

Well done everyone - some inspiring posts on here ! Esp. on running with MS - my DH developed a rare immune system/ neurological condition this time last year which almost finished him off and he's trying to get back into running whilst dealing with the symptoms so its good to hear about it.

Didn't get out this weekend as was away and then too hungover tired yesterday. Gym tomorrow but have to have my 'weights' induction so may not get much of a run in.

Twink · 05/10/2009 16:48

Ooh, your achievements have brightened up my lousy day!

Hat, that race looks superb, oh to be a bit closer!

I'm in the London reject club too, and am the notsoproud owner of a red rainjacket - if I added a couple of poles to it it'd work as a bivvi tent for a mountain marathon - it's huge!!

Trying to find an alternative focus to keep me sane but struggling to find anything that's hard enough but not too extreme iyswim. Toying with Ironman 70.3 but the UK course is described as the world's hardest HIM so perhaps a bit ambitious .

IdrisTheDragon · 05/10/2009 16:54

My reindeer antlers arrived today

hatwoman · 05/10/2009 17:14

sfxmum - girls' experience 10 years ago sounds a bit similar to mine - male consultant who pretty much told me to go home and not worry my pretty little head about it. so several anxious weeks and months followed with a million questions popping into my head and me not sure who to go to. now my hospital has an MS nurse - very good and accessible - gives you her telephone number and email - imo it's a really important role - provides people with information and support without taking away from a consultant's time. things are definitely better than they were 10 years ago. ms is a weird diagnosis - I don't know about girls but I spent about a year, possibly a bit more, convinced I was on a one-way street to wheelchair-ville. I don;t think I showed it, but it was definitely there, in my head. the problem is they just won't give you any sort of prognosis. about 3 years ago (7 years after diagnosis) my consultant kind of hinted that things were looking good and it was quite likely it would stay mild for a long time. anyway...on with the running talk (I love this thread btw - it's great to come on here and talk a bit about running and bits of pieces of other stuff. fab.)

Themasterandmargaritas · 05/10/2009 17:27

look at this you would-be VLM runners.

Twink · 05/10/2009 17:31

My climbing teacher has MS and is an absolute inspiration, always helps me to get a grip (boom boom) when I can't get around a particular problem. There's also a chap there who climbs well and only has one leg, I'm in awe and wish my two could function as well as their 1-and-a-bit and 1 respectively.

IdrisTheDragon · 06/10/2009 13:20

Went out running this morning and did 45 min. Was just under 10 min/mile which felt slow compared with my 5k under 30 minutes but I did do 4.5 miles so I suppose my legs do go a little slower. Am hopeful of being able to gradually increase to the 10k

It was raining which was all right as I get hot while running and so not having any kind of jacket didn't matter. Am wearing a dri-fit short sleeved top when running at the moment - do they do them in long sleeved versions? And will people be selling them on ebay [cheapskate emoticon]?

popsycal · 06/10/2009 14:05

idris - 10k will only be around 15 minutes more running. You can doit!!

There are long sleeved tops- yes.

IdrisTheDragon · 06/10/2009 14:59

So might I be able to do a 10k in not all that much more than an hour? I can hardly believe it

Twink · 06/10/2009 15:14

Definitely be fine for a 10k, and capable of doing it in an hour too. Set yourself 3 targets (she said in a bossy tone of voice):

Firstly one you will be able to achieve eg finish

Secondly, one which will be achievable if the conditions are right eg run all the way or finish in under 70 mins

Finally, your absolutely best hope, if the weather works, you have a good night's kip, gods smiling etc eg sub-60

Sweatshop have some good value long sleeved tops here

Twink · 06/10/2009 15:17

Popsycal, thanks for your earlier comment, made me cry! Mumsnet is a fab place despite what the DM may say.

popsycal · 06/10/2009 18:30

TWINK - YOU ARE MORE THAN welcome. You truely inspire me to keepon running

Idris
Iwould say you could do your race now in around an hour

I do the 3 target thing too- my gnr realistic target was 2:30, I wannted to get 2:24 (I wanted to be half as good as the marathon world champion - half as good= same time, half the distance and my best best effort was 2:10, Did it 2:09.53

popsycal · 06/10/2009 19:43

I am sitting here mulling over Edinburgh half or marathon rlay if I can get a team together. What are the logistics like? Where does it start? Am I likely to find somewhere to stay? What is transport like back to centre of edinburgh? Hmmmm.

popsycal · 08/10/2009 18:23

heads upgals - aldi running gesr next thurs

lots of good winter stuff

Wheelybug · 08/10/2009 18:32

ooh good tip popsy. not sure whether there's an aldi near here... will check.

did you decide on the edinburgh run ?

My bro is trying to get me to commit to a 10K in jan/feb so he can get his wife to do it (). He found one in jan but they don't allow ipods and to make matters worse no medal on completion, just a mug. So I said no. No medal, no run . Even better if there's a tshirt too !!

Wallace · 08/10/2009 19:33

great all my running stuff is aldi Even my headphones

I would be up for relay, pops

Wallace · 08/10/2009 19:39

PS I need a new sports bra - any recommendations?

fishie · 08/10/2009 19:45

i've got this really comfortable and no bounce. also doesn't go grey in wash.

OrmIrian · 08/10/2009 19:53

I don't think I belong here any more

I am really struggling with my running. Everytime I do a run and manage a moderate distance I feel so pleased even though my fitness has gone way down. But the next day my feet are sore again. I was doing 12 miles back in the spring - not I struggle to do 4 and keep having to stop to walk.

Feeling so discouraged.

And I am so unfit. I think coming off my anti-Ds has made me feel less fit as well - more breathless.

Perhaps I am just getting too old.

fishie · 08/10/2009 20:14

orm i know how much running is good for thinking / stress - when i think of what i used to be like... but once a runner always a runner even if temporarily sofa-bound. have you seen a physio?

i know you have got limited time to run in as well, it must encourage you to go further than you might prefer. you've had a nasty injury, it might take quite a long time till you are going far again. and if you're too old then so are most of us!

Wallace · 08/10/2009 20:20

Orm - not too old! Remember man beghind me in my last half marathon was 81

Sorry you are feeling so down. It must be hard for your body to adjust to being off antiDs. Do try a physio like fishie suggests.

You will always belong here

fishie - thanks but it doesn't come in my size. Think mine are deflating like balloons now. Prob only a B cup

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/10/2009 20:23

Oh Orm . You are the original runner.

I'm with fishie, you have had a couple of bad injuries and now have come off some pretty heavy drugs. Don't be hard on yourself.

It'll take a little time for your body to adapt again. Start short and slow again and I'll bet in no time you will be back to your 12 miles (which is still a huge effort for most of us!).

I'm also very impressed with you guys suffering from MS and doing all this running. There are some inspiring folk on this thread.
