Gosh hatwoman that sounds...er...hard. Really hard actually. Would it be fun? It doesn't sound it

I was feeling pretty chuffed with my 7 miles this morning...

hatwoman · 03/10/2009 13:13

well it's a done deal now. friend is picking me up at quarter to 9. she doesn't want to run alone so doesn;t mind going slow. we looked for a map of the route but they don't give them out til tomorrow morning...

neither of us have done one where navigation counts - and relatively-speaking it's an easy one for first-timers (quite short and not all that wild). feels good to be doing something different and a bit challenging.

oooo next spring it'll be the 22 miler across the wilds of kinder scout...

IdrisTheDragon · 03/10/2009 16:39

Somehow my 5k I'll be doing tomorrow in the (generally) flat lands of Bedfordshire sounds a little boring now .

Just went for a short run to feel in the mood for it tomorrow. Ran past DS's old teacher (she was walking). We smiled at each other (and I was glad I wasn't going further so at least wasn't dripping with sweat ).

girlsyearapart · 03/10/2009 17:21

wow well done hatwoman. That is double 'ard of you!

Have signed for 10k in nov and 15k in dec and may well be pg by then.

I go very slow about 35 mins ish for 5k more if going further. DH reckons he won't 'let' me run if I'm pg by then but I reckon it'll be fine.

Any advice/experience of same?

Wallace · 03/10/2009 19:40

Sounds fun, hatwoman

Good luck, Idris

gils - I think it is okay to carry on running if you fall preg if you run already. As long as it feels comfy of course

Still no rejection (or acceptance) mag for me...

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/10/2009 20:30

Hattie, that sounds amazing Have fun.

Is there a number you can call Wallace? I can't stand the suspense any longer....

Good luck Idris.

I managed 10 miles this morning and am delighted. Now I just need to manage 11 next weekend.

Wallace · 03/10/2009 20:32

We get an email Monday anway. Pretty sure I'm not it. I hope not now seeing as I have decided not to do a marathon til 2011!

Of course I am still secretly hoping...

hatwoman · 03/10/2009 21:09

the website for my race tomorrow says "event suspended"...apparently the winds were so strong today that people out on the tops were crawling. but th number to call seems to think it's going ahead

girlsyearapart · 04/10/2009 06:52

So hatwoman are you or aren't you??

Wallace · 04/10/2009 07:55

Well wind has dropped here today. Wonder if it is the same where hatwoman is? Hope so

popsycal · 04/10/2009 12:29

ust been out for 8 miles. Underesitimated the sun and ended up stopping to remove layers after about a mile. Did a there and back route for the first 6 miles. First three up slight incline into the sun, next three into the wind! Then a little 2 mile loop near home.

10k point was 58:28 which is my fastest time outside of GN10k in July. Total for 8 miles was 1:18. The last mile was HIDEOUS. I started feeling really tight on my left calf and then got a stitch - which I never get. I also fell flat on my bum at work on Friday and I had forgotten to take it easy.

ANyway. Was pleased withthe run

wondering how hatwoamn isdoing

hatwoman · 04/10/2009 13:07

hi everyone. just back - it was really good. I was very slow - slowed my friend down loads but it was an amazing route - with incredible views. we went up here then along the ridge to the hill in the background. it was brilliant.

girlsyearapart · 04/10/2009 14:34

yay well done you hatwoman!

just wondering how you lot all know how far you're running?

Gadgetry?

I can only estimate it on mapmyrun but lots is by the river so hard to calculate.

IdrisTheDragon · 04/10/2009 14:38

Did my fastest ever 5k at 29 min 36 seconds And it had Hills (well medium slopes but to me they were hills ).

Nicer than the RFL - not so many people and men as well which felt better too as well.

Am going to train for my 10k on November 29th now (well maybe not quite now). Think that will be a bit more hard work.

RosieMac · 05/10/2009 09:14

Good morning ladies, newbie to the running thread. Only running for 4 months, but making good progress. Doing a novice 3k cross country next weekend. My first ever running race. Buying spikes this aft. Any other tips? Thanks.

fishie · 05/10/2009 09:42

wow hat, that is awesome i would be terrified. it was bad enough being driven round there 10 years ago - dh and i went on the blue john cave tour and had to leave it, we got too scared.

gya i use mapmyrun, sometimes it is difficult ie where there are trees but you soon get a feel for how to do it and also how much ground you cover in what time.

Themasterandmargaritas · 05/10/2009 09:50

Well done Hattie and Idris. Gosh Hattie you are really a tough cookie, I am quite of your stamina.

Welcome Rosie, Hattie is definitely your woman to talk you through cross country and fell running.

Girls, I use a Nike+ thingy....

Any news today Wallace?

It's a vomfest here at TMAM's. I was supposed to do 5 miles but only managed 5k. Sick children and queasy tummies don't make for a lovely run.

My shins are still killing me, do you think it could be my shoes? I have Nike shoes but which brand between you all is your favourite? I am a little limited in what I can buy here but it would be interesting to know what you all run in....

hatwoman · 05/10/2009 10:25

Hi again everyone. I keep thinking about Sunday and I'm pretty mortified just how much I slowed my friend down by. we'd said we'd to it together because neither of us were that confident about the map-reading business - but it was such a beautiful clear day, and the route was so clear and easy that we didn;t really need to stick together. I kept saying to her to go on ahead, but she stuck with me... I had to walk the steeper parts of it (lots of people do) but my friend's like a mountain goat. she's also very competitive which is what drives her. whereas I lack a certain oomph in my head. it's all in the head.

she half-suggested we try a mini mountain marathon together. but they're really rather odd. you turn up on the day and get given a map and a set of check points. and then you have to get to as many checkpoints as you can (in any order - up to you) and back to base in 3 hours. you get points for each check point - and some of them are worth more than others. she was going to do a proper mountain marathon (which is the same thing except you take a tent and spend 2 days doing it ...) with her dh but he's injured. a think a mini one with me would be a poor substitute...

perhaps we should both join a club and then maybe we can each find someone at our own level to team up with...we could still do the same events but wouldn't feel bad about our vastly different levels...

right, that's enough whinging form me. I'm off to do some work. hope everyone's ok.

girlsyearapart · 05/10/2009 11:35

hatwoman she sounds like a lovely friend.
I worry about slowing people down too.
Did my 5k with a friend she stayed with me for 4 1/2 k then left.

The 10k I did by myself with my ipod.

I do run really slow. Have to be bit careful not to make myself ill (got M.S) and it's a bit tricky running with a partner.

Idea about joining a club is good.

Nice to go to events with someone for the hanging about beforehand even if you don't run.

themaster what is your nike thingy for distance?? how much where from how does it work??

I did about 3 k yesterday leaving a screaming dd2 with our lodger. She cried the whole time I was out..

hatwoman · 05/10/2009 11:44

blimey girls - I have MS too! fortunately very very mild. had a horrible time in 2000 (diagnosed when pg with dd1) and again had a horrible leg thing going on in...eek..about 2004 I think. but since then have been really well (hence in part the running enthusiasm - feel the need to take full advantage of my health, just in case it all goes a bit wrong...). I do feel temporarily horrible if I get too hot - all weird and fuzzy and tingly, esp around my head. what about you? hope you are ok.

girlsyearapart · 05/10/2009 11:56

Exactly hat.

Have got relapsing remitting MS mainly affects right hand, right side of face and sight.

Started when I was 21 (nearly 10 years now) with optic neuritis which made me temporarily blind in 1 eye.

Lots of specualtion over diagnosis questioning epilepsy but got def MS diagnosis 4 years later after right arm stopped working and went purple.

Now all usually ok but have face slides on right side, sight in right eye not so fab and right hand claws up.

Have been on interferon injections but you need to stop 3 months bef ttc (hence the girls year apart thing!)

Am off them again to try for 3rd.

Anyway not meant to get hot, tired or stressed so have taken up running and have two pre schoolers and a dog and am trying for 3rd baby.

Also want to capitalise on health can't bear people feeling sorry for me. I'm fine so many others aren't!

hatwoman · 05/10/2009 12:08

it was 10 years ago for me too - I was 29. also ON - I thought I had a migraine...but when I'd had it for a week I went to docs. I'll never forget her getting me to cover my good eye and read the eye chart thing with the bad one. "to be honest", I said "I can't even see that there's a chart". at which point she phoned the hospital there and then and sent me straight there. actually got diagnosed pretty quickly as had a history of pins and needles, l'hermites (?sp) and then got trigeminal neuralgia a couple of weeks later. good god that was a great Christmas. I slept for most of it.

anyway, thankfully have good health now. and have got my head round it. which took a while but I'm there now.

girlsyearapart · 05/10/2009 12:14

Takes a while doesn't it.

I couldn't see the chart either. And I wasn't worried.

Had no idea that ON is very big first symptom of MS so was majorly in shock when the consultant said I had it.

No explaining, no info nothing. Old man doc about to retire. Ran down corridor crying. Was just before my 21st birthday party.

Got the confirmed diagnosis just before my 25th birthday. More info and support this time though.

Got through my 30th without anything happening though!

angelene · 05/10/2009 15:01

Hi all

I very virtuously sacrificed my Friday night half-bottle and a bit more of wine and did 7k on Saturday morning, which I did in 49 mins. Puts my crappy 10k time into perspective, and a few weeks back I did the same in 45 mins so I've definitely lost a bit of fitness (although my Nike+ made me run a good 500m further than before ). But it was good to get out on the usual route and to do it all nearly without stopping.

I really needed it too as it was DD's 4th birthday on Saturday and the party on Sunday, so the headspace and the feeling of 'getting it done early on' IYKWIM was very welcome. I'm going to try and get out on Wednesday evening and see how good my reflective thing is.

girls the Nike+ is a sensor and attachment that you connect to your iPod, it measures distance, pace, time and calories, it's about 20 quid. You don't need Nike running shoes either, you can get a little wallet thing to go through your laces. It's good but not absolutely accurate, it's not like a GPS thing. But you get 'congratulations' messages from Paula Radcliffe and Lance Armstrong when you do PBs!

sfxmum · 05/10/2009 15:40

hello all

great to hear of all your fab races and times

I did 5miles on Saturday at slow pace but was fine with it hopefully will get on with 6miles next weekend
I expect will have to dig out the semi waterproof jacket I have, quite wet here

hope everyone is well
