wheely you may live near me then- the 15k i'm doing in dec is richmond park.
fancy it??

Themasterandmargaritas · 30/09/2009 19:20

at the thought of you two running in antlers and santa costumes.

I can't begin to imagine that happening here. Santa appears sporadically in the supermarkets, scaring the bejeesus out of the dc because he is black, skinny and rather scruffy looking.

Wheelybug · 30/09/2009 19:39

Thanks for the welcome !

I was hoping to do a santa dash this year but we are at a wedding the weekend of most of them that I could get to. Same goes for the Reindeer run. Actually I did find one very near me but it was 1 mile and even I can do more than that .

And also, same goes for the 15K Girlsyearsapart. Also, I really don't think I'll be up to 15K by then but thanks. Let me know if you hear of any runs near here of 5-10K nature. I am very near Richmond Park. Did you do the Hampton Court 10K ? I was meant to do that last year and was running 10K plus but took to my sofa as soon as I found out I was pg. I have the t-shirt though that's the main thing.

I may be doing a 4K on 1 Nov at Loseley Park. You can also do a 10K but think its slightly cross country so thought I'd aim low.

Hello

I'm new and looking for some advice from some experienced runners

I've started running recently - at the moment I do about 30 mins 3 times a week, I'm a bit shit but amazed how quickly I'm improving. So I really want to keep this up over Autumn and Winter but it's now starting to getting dark in the evenings when I mainly do my running.

I live in a city and don't really like running on streets, I much prefer the parks but they are v badly lit round here.

Do any of you run in the dark / dusk? If so where do you run? Is it even a good idea to run in the dark, or is it best to just go in daylight hours?

girlsyearapart · 30/09/2009 20:33

wheely- we are in Ham.

Just signed up for another 10k on Nov 8th at Old deer park (by r mond pool) £14 not a charity one thought I'd over estimate the sponsor love of friends and family doing 3 so close!

Hi catzee- Same prob here I can't run till 7pm after the kids go to bed and it;s dark by then.

I love running down by the river and across parkland we have near but its spooky and probably a bit silly.

Also have limited vision in one eye so can't see too well..

I ran on the pavements tonight but I always run with my dog so feel bit safer. He's a staffie and not in the least aggressive but he'd put people off!

popsycal · 30/09/2009 20:49

hmmm If IU shoud do the ednburgh half next may, is there likely to be places to stay.....

Wheelybug · 30/09/2009 20:50

Girls.. I am in New Malden so not a million miles away.

I did RFL 08 at the Old Deer Park so I know it. We are also away w/e of 8 November (does it sound like I am making excuses ).

How do you hear about smaller runs everyone ? I have a look on runners world now and then....

soyabean · 30/09/2009 21:15

Hi all, and Hi Wheelybug - I ran in a gym for the first time in ages today, just beacause I had to be at the Leisure Centre with ds2 anyway...but I don't like it I have to say. I only really want to use the running machine and I resent paying £4 to run in a stuffy room (dingy old leisure centre) when I much prefer being outside. Howvere it fits with work and ds' activity and I do find it very hard to get out for a run during the week, so it will have to do.I dont like to run in the dark so winter evenings are no good.

Catzee · 30/09/2009 21:32

girlsyearapart I would love a dog but DH says no

I don't think I would enjoy a running machine either soyabean - but it is an option I hadn't thought of, thanks

girlsyearapart · 01/10/2009 07:39

You can borrow mine catzee!

I started my training on a treadmill as was too embarassed to go on the roads before I could run properly.. Built up to 45 mins then started on the road.

Wheely- excuses excuses..
found those runs on the Runners world website

liath · 01/10/2009 08:06

Hi Wheelybug !

Popsy, we've a spare room but I think DH might be wary of letting someone off t'internet to stay - we'd have to concoct some kind of cover story . Wheelybug can act as surety that I'm not a hairy trucker!!

I did a Santa run a couple of years ago but had ds in a sling and dd in a buggy so it was more of a Santa dawdle! It was good fun, though.

Every cloud has a silver lining as I've been at the gym loads since my ankle started playing up and am probably at my fittest ever. There's a New Year 5k here & it'd be great to be fit to run it .

Themasterandmargaritas · 01/10/2009 08:25

Welcome newbies.

I popped out a 10k today in 59 minutes which delighted me. So Popsy you could easily manage a sub 55min 10k. Now I really have to try to run 10 miles on Saturday if I and my knees stand a chance at this half on the 25th.

hatwoman · 01/10/2009 09:16

Morning Ladies. anyone else get VLM* news today? No place for me - and I think my gut reaction tells that it's a good thing. I like the waterproof jacket (and I actually really need one) but it's ENORMOUS.even though it's meant to be "small". Reckon I'll have to donate it to to dh or db. bit annpyed as it would be excellent if it fitted.

*I hate this. It reminds me of VPL.

hatwoman · 01/10/2009 09:18

while I'm on the topic...does anyone have a good, light weight waterproof that they'd recommend?

IdrisTheDragon · 01/10/2009 10:48

I ran for 40 minutes this morning. It was 4.13 miles. I am pleased with myself

Wallace · 01/10/2009 15:20

Oops I'm still calling it FLM.

Sorry you didn't get a place. I didn't get anything yet, but we're nosebleed North so it takes a bit longer. Very eeeek that I might know soon.

Hi to newbies

Wallace · 02/10/2009 12:48

Still nothing today

I don't think I'm in though becasue apparently if you go to the VLM website and click on the link to pay (if you have beeen accepted but didn't pay at the time of entering ballot) you can enter your details and if you are in it will have you on the system. I didn't recognise my details

Wheelybug · 02/10/2009 13:40

Did my first sesh in the gym this morning - 30 mins on the treadmill. Didn't go quite as far as I'd hoped but did just over 4K and I walked a bit at the beginning to warm up. I was doing 5K in 26-27 minutes pre-baby so need to shift some flab and get moving a bit more !! The running wasn't so bad but its not quite so picturesque staring at a wall (they do have tv screens but mine wasn't working - bah !).

Popsy - Liath isn't too hairy and I didn't see a truck parked anywhere nearby on the couple of occasions we've met so I think you can trust her(although I think on the second occasion her dd did try and nick some poor child's scooter so she might be one to watch out for (it might actually have been my dd, it was a long time ago !))

popsycal · 02/10/2009 19:49

This whole darkness thing and business at work is really putting the dampers on my running.

Iwill be outin the morning as soon as I get the chance. I really fancy a 8-9 miler if I can get away with it. Might get DH to drop meoff somehwere then he can take the boys to the park for a bit then drive home and I should be back soon after.

Wondering how important a 'plan' is this 10k - obviously I need to run 3 ish times a week. But I would like my weekend runs to be longer than suggested.

I am seriously considering the ednburgh half next may - really don't fancy the marathon I don't think

Wallace · 02/10/2009 19:58

I almost entered the Edinburgh Marathon and then I stopped and had a think.

Ds2 is only 3 and goes to nursery 3 mornings a week (my choice). If I were to be training for a marathon I would probably end up sending him more days.

I really enjoy our mornings we have together and there are not many more years left when he can be at home with me. I think I need to put him first at this point.

However by the time he is in his second year of nursery he will be going 4 or 5 mornings a week leaving more time for my running.

SO Marathon spring 2011 is now the plan.

Wallace · 02/10/2009 19:58

But I might do the Edinburgh half, posposy

popsycal · 02/10/2009 20:01

I amon the entry website right now....considering it,.

Then Ithink....DH may well have no job (redundant in a few weeks). Iwould need train fare, accomodation money - thanks so much liath but I woud be another one concocting a story for dh!! And then there is the hassle of afterwards....

t least with GNR it was my home turf....

oh what to do, what to do!!!

Wallace · 03/10/2009 07:20

I know what you mean. I luckily have relatives in Edinburgh.

Prob won't fill up for a while so you could think about tit.

hatwoman · 03/10/2009 10:50

so who thinks I should do this race tomorrow?

it's 8 miles, 1500 feet of climb. it's an unmarked route - you get given a map. you have to take full equipment - waterproofs, compass, hat, gloves, whistle. My friend is interested - but like me is a bit nervous about the navigation - and she's much quicker than me so not sure how realistic running together is...

tbh I think we could both wing it and just follow people - we've both done that fine on 6 mile routes. the only thing we'd need to be careful about is following the people who are doing the 16 mile route...

really undecided...
