AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 21:28

righto i am back, i know i keep announcing this and then not starting but actually for the last month i've had an ear infection so balance hasn't been my strong point.

i have also lost my shuffle (which it's a leeeeeetle bit possible that i've been using as an excuse) so what i'm hoping someone can tell me is the timings for the first week of couch to five km so i can do it with my olde-fashionede watch-type instrument.

can anyone help?

Wallace · 15/04/2009 21:34

Hi Aitch, not the same prog but I used the BUPA one

Hill training was fun tonight. Hard, but good

AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 21:57

sfxmum · 15/04/2009 22:29

wallace glad to hear hills went well or you went well over them[

aitch ouch on ear infection glad you are feeling better

norky I would say a shop selling more than one brand preferably independent, having said that my local Up&Running is very good, never feel like they are pushing stuff and always give good advice and not just on shoes, training too

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 16/04/2009 08:41

Norky - In central London I have used

Run and Become - Victoria
Runners Need - Holborn (nto bought shoes here but DP has)
London City Runner - St Pauls

and have found them all very good. They have a good range and very helpful advice.

liath · 16/04/2009 09:15

Justcallmegoat - I started running in Jan and can get round Arthur's Seat now - it's easier going clockwise I think and the first time I gave myself permission to walk up. Next time I ran up incredibly slowly. You get a massive endorphin kick at the top it's almost worth it . Let me know if you need a buddy to run round with.

Wallace · 16/04/2009 13:52

Thanks Aitch, he is still gorgeous and is now nicknamed "Project Mayhem" and

OrmIrian · 16/04/2009 16:01

ROLF at bonding with hills! Hills are bastards. Full stop. Or BA's as I now call them. I came back from a run a few months back and DH asked me how I got on. 'OK, but that last hill was a bit of a bastard'. 'Which bit?' 'Armpit!' So baaad hills are now 'bastard's armpits' in this house They are horrors to be overcome but at least they have the advantage of a lovely downhill on the other side. And I prefer the big ones that get themselves over with in one go, I hate the ones that go up, then down a bit, up a bit more, flat, up a bit more, down a bit up etc...

Ripeberry · 16/04/2009 16:07

Hi, i'm thinking of starting running and will be doing the 7 week programme of walking, short runs, walking.
But the main thing that puts me off is that i'm surrounded by hills around here so would have to run on a hill straight away.
Also, is there a best time of day to do this?
And how do you motivate yourself? I could do mornings in the summer (before 7am) and later in the morning in winter, but i won't do evenings as there are no street lights here.
Also what do you do if people hasstle you whilst you are running?

Themasterandmargaritas · 16/04/2009 16:45

Ripe, as a BA bonder, I feel suitably qualified to comment that hills can become your friends. When you are running, just go really really slowly, barely faster than a walk even and use your arms a lot. It will be grim at first then miraculously it becomes easier (sort of) and then you will feel really good about it.

Personally I prefer to run in the mornings as by the evening time I am knackered!

Fwiw, even though I am a white person running in Kenya, with an ipod, I have never been hassled. After a while you tend not to care when people stare at you.

I now haven't run for a week as we have been on safari with lots of wild beasties, so I will go out tomorrow morning.

Ripeberry · 16/04/2009 16:48

Thanks, i know the first 3 weeks or so will be a pain but hills will be great for me as the flat bits will be so much easier!

ShrinkingViolet · 16/04/2009 16:50

Aitch - CP to 5K Week 1 is 5 mins walk, 8 x 60 seconds run 90 seconds walk, 5 mins walk.

OrmIrian · 16/04/2009 16:51

Bit of a dilemma re running. DD is having a sleepover saturday night for her 10th b'day. Sunday morning is my 'big run' day. Was planning to extend my fav run to 12 miles. But it will take some time (probably 2 hrs ). Would it be unreasonable to go anyway and leave DD and DH to deal with the guests (4 of them)? They will be gorn by the time I get back. Only GPs will be over in the afternoon so I can't go then. Waddya think?

On and PS, would you attempt 12 miles with a slighly dodgy knee?

sfxmum · 16/04/2009 16:59

ripeberry welcome I prefer morning as much as possible although occasionally I go for a late afternoon run, can't help with hills

Orm - go for the run you will probably need it by then can't comment on dodgy knee

I went today for a 3mile run in the rain with a sore throat so not the most sensible person in the world

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 16/04/2009 17:21

Orm I'm afraid I would be out of there like a shot on Sunday morning, no two ways about it.

OrmIrian · 16/04/2009 17:22

That may be the wisest course. Not sure DH sees it that way though...

JustCallMeGoat · 18/04/2009 12:57

whoo hoo thanks ladies for your hills pep talk ran 10k round a big hill (skirted arthurs seat) have to admitt running down the other side was v. pleasing. i am a convert.

liath were do you live? a running meet up might be good fun , i am v. slow btw.

ormirian did you go?

OrmIrian · 18/04/2009 14:43

Tis tomorrow morning.

Well done!

fishie · 18/04/2009 19:40

orm of course you must go for your run, is not as if you swapped days to get out of sleepover.

i have done 15k today, am smug. got a bamboo top from amazon it is not very flattering but feels very good.

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/04/2009 20:45

Good for you goatie! See, hills are friends.

Right fishie, you've inspired me. I'm going to try for 15k tomorrow morning. Wish me luck.

sfxmum · 18/04/2009 21:01

goatie well done

only did 4 miles this morning BUT just entered the local race for life in June

MrsWednesday · 18/04/2009 22:35

Yay, well done sfxmum

Orm, have you decided what to do? If it was me, I think I'd be escaping for a run as soon as possible on Sunday morning...

In slight panic mode as I've realised I only have 3 weeks until my half marathon, eek. Managed 10 miles this morning but it was very hard and slow going which doesn't bode well.

liath · 19/04/2009 08:02

Justcallmegoat - I'm on the Newington side of Arthur's Seat. Am also slow - I don't think I was designed to run.

6 weeks until the marathon relay. I'm going to try and run my leg distance tomorrow (8km) and then try and push the distance further before the relay so that the 8km should be relatively easy on the day. Or that's the plan. I've never really run for fitness before so it's all a bit new!

futurity · 19/04/2009 08:14

i ran 10 miles yesterday for the first time:-) i was scheduled to do nine but felt good at 7 so thought i would try and go for 10 as i saw that as a mini milestone. That last mile was tough especially as i ran up and down some local roads a few times just to make sure my garmin showed 10 miles:-)

Half marathon in october so
ages before i need to add on the extra 3 miles thankfully:-)
