just to house the runners

No SFX, not mine, and amazingly the rain held off until the end! Hope the birthday celebrations are going well.

It was a 46 mile road ride (the hard core could do 77 or 126, but I'd have needed to take a tent for an overnight stop!) I think we went up or down every hill in the county, there was hardly any of it that was flat so I must have had a good workout ??

Peachy, it's fine to do walk recovery if you're trying your hardest, as long as you keep moving it doesn't really matter. Sounds like a good session.

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 07/06/2009 14:17

Maybe I will investigate some proper running clothes. I think I didn't want to before I could see if I would keep doing it. As I've now been running about two months maybe it is time to take the plunge (definite mixed metaphor there

Can't imagine running 8 miles but seeing as a couple of months ago I couldn't imagine running for 8 minutes maybe it is achievable one day

19fran76 · 07/06/2009 20:25

Hey LovelyRita, when I first started I wore some very dodgy purple 'dance' pants & a nasty selection of cheap xl t-shirts. I waited a few months to test whether I would stick with it. I cannot tell you the boost it gave me to wear a simple white running vest & black running tights It is
more comfortable wearing a top that wicks away sweat, plus looking more like a runner helped me feel like less of an imposter IYKWIM

Congratulations on your 8 miles Badgermonkey, like yer t-shirt

I did 6 miles today running continuously for the first time, hurrah! Did just under a 9m/m. Celebrated with a lovely late afternoon nap with my DD

AtheneNoctua · 07/06/2009 21:52

I think nice running clothes actually keep me motivate. If I have a cool new Nike (I am big Nike fan) t-shirt and I want to wear it, that makes me want to go running. So, nice running clothes are in fact essential motivation tools for the job.

I am feeling like a slacker on this thread. 8 miles is fab. I could probably do 5 at a push. I really like going to the gym because it never rains and it's always reasonably cool. Howver, my video entertainment has become rather unpredictable and that winds me up. Besides, with what is turning into weekly travel to Aberdeen where I have no gym, I'm going to have to get off my arse and hit the train (probably even in the rain... unfortunately)

SFX
Hope little SFX is having a fab birthday. DS had his a couple of weeks ago. We had to cancel the original party the day before when he broke out with a rash that turned out to be Scarlett Fever.

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 07/06/2009 21:57

Have to admit anything that wicks away sweat would be a good idea .

I will Investigate

MoshiMoshi · 08/06/2009 08:46

sfx what a shame Up and Running are closing down! They fitted my aero bars on my road bike and were really friendly. Must pop down to see if I can bag a bargain...

I agree that wicking clothing is essential. It is what I always put on as a base layer. Then I will layer on top of that if really cold. Even if it seems pricey you will get lots of use from it as it is so comfy for wearing in any situation where you are likely to be a bit sweaty! So, for example, I use mine for horse riding, skiing, cycling, walking and, of course, running!

fishie · 08/06/2009 08:54

i have a bamboo tshirt, it is fantastic. very soft and light and wicky.

i have large shoulders and do find it very annoying that ladies running clothes are so bloody small. i don't want to wear mens!

sfxmum · 08/06/2009 10:22

hi all

athene poor boy hope he is now well recovered

moshi I was quite alarmed when the shop guy told me that but he assured me it was for re fitting so am hoping it will still be a great shiny new shop

twink good to hear your race went well albeit all up the mountain

definitely wick properties clothing so much more comfortable

hope there won't be rain when I can run tomorrow but either way I will go out, because I must

fishie I have broad shoulders and big boobs too it is incredibly hard to find a flattering v-neck top preferably not in pink and that doesn't cost a bomb

peachsmuggler · 08/06/2009 10:48

I'm sorry. Twink, did you say you ran 46 miles????

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 08/06/2009 11:59

Managed to take a arong turn on my route (thought there was a turning off the road I was on and there wasn't). By some sense of perverse not wanting to turn round I kept going but as the pavement disappeared and there was only long grass stopped running .

Now have lots of nettle stings and a feeling of not really having achieved what I meant to.

Will plan route for next run better

Am going to get a proper top too (and at least with miniscule breasts and narrow shoulders there should be lots to choose from )

Twink · 08/06/2009 13:31

No Peachy, I know my friends think I'm nuts but ultras are for true hardcore imho. This was a sportif bike ride, but great fun nonetheless. However it's meant I've not run this weekend so need to get myself out there!

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 15:39

The only running gear that works for me here in this heat is addidas climacool stuff, it's great.

Now ladies I need some help here. I have 20 days left til I do my half. Today I did 16k but struggled at the 14k mark. Other friends here are now taking performance enhancing lactic acid powder supplement thingies and I'm getting scared of the competition! I went to the health food shop and the only thing similar to what they have costs £25 , so how can I boost my lactic acid naturally, before running and after?

And with only 20 days left, what sort of final week schedule should I have? Should I do lots of shorter but faster 11k runs?

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 15:40

Sorry, it should say final weeks

19fran76 · 08/06/2009 18:30

master I don't know but your competition sound fierce.

Wallace · 08/06/2009 20:01

master - not sure aboout all this lactic acid thingies but form what I remember the run a week before should be a 6 miles at race pace, and your last long run 10/11 miles is fine should be two weeks before your race.

I did a 10k event yeaterday and got a PB (58.45 Wallace whispers)so not that fast but fast for me but because it is about 30 secs faster than previous and at least 3 mins faster than my last 10k.

19fran76 · 08/06/2009 20:27

Hurrah for Wallace & her new PB !

19fran76 · 08/06/2009 20:31

Oh bother, I was trying to shout loudly but some of it still dropped to a whisper.

Congratulations .

Wallace · 08/06/2009 20:34

Thanks

peachsmuggler · 08/06/2009 20:46

Nice one wallace! Am aiming for something similar for my next 10k. Will use you as inspiration!

Ahhh twink - that makes more sense . Well done!

master - I know not of what you speak lady. All sounds very professional though!

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 09/06/2009 09:46

I am very impressed at your PB Wallace

sfxmum · 09/06/2009 11:23

wallace great time I am suitably impressed

master can't help with your query but expect runners world can

went out for 3 miles this morning bit soggy but it was lovely feel better already

hope everyone is well

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/06/2009 16:00

Great time Wallace! Thanks for the tips too, I will keep to 16k for the next two long runs and try to do a couple of 12k and a couple of faster 8ks.

I have googled lactic acid boosting and asked a physio friend who says the best way is to carb load.......I think their supplements are a waste of time and money, it's all pyschological

Wallace · 09/06/2009 20:54

Ah yes, was going to mention carb loading, but wasn't quite sure we were talking about the same thing

peachsmuggler · 10/06/2009 10:11

Morning all.

Am feeling very chuffed as did 6 miles last night in 56min 25 sec which is my fastest ever (previous in training was 60mins) and it felt pretty good. Think it is finally dawning on me that in races I should be running faster than I would at normal comfy speed so reckon if I go a little bit faster, or even just sprint the last 0.2 miles in my 10k I should be able to do it in less than an hour.

Was going to take a wander over to the race course (Clapham Common) and walk it to get an idea of what it's like this afternoon, but it is absolutely peeing it down. Hope none of you is caught out in that rain just now!

On the subject of carb loading. Is the reason behind it that you build up lots of sugar in your blood to get you through a race so that your body doesn't need to revert to fat stores or something, and should you just then eat loads of pasta the week leading up to the race?
