I WILL NOT nesh out again like I did last time.

DP has even bought me an iPod Shuffle to run with so that I don't have to lug my big iPod around (oh the inconvenience).

this is what I'm talking about and here's the podcasts I run to.

I'm not starting today though, got about 3 hours sleep last night.

halster, well I don't know really. Since my good run last week when I did my 10 min mile I have had 2 bad runs.

I say bad I mean I have been tired, my legs felt like lead weights, out of puff, struggled, not managed to go more than 2.5 k and have taken 30 mins to do so.

So I seem to be going backwards.

I am going out again today but I rather dreading it.

I think at the mo I am going to work on speeding up a little, getting my strength up.

I think it would be easier for me to plod on slowly for a longer time, but i know if i go too fast at the start there is no way i can recover.

Actually I don't think the book I'm listening to is very inspiring for running, bit depressing actually.....

Did W6R3 today. Maanged the whole thing wich I was so pleased about considering I never managed the dreaded W5R3.

I found it quite easy going actually. But now, three hours later I could just sleep for 100 years. Am exhausted.

Gorionine · 05/03/2009 14:48

Oh, Doodle2u and myself did talk about starting running when this thread first came up, we actually started about two weeks ago because it was really to frosty before that. We are now on a just over 2 miles without stopping and are planning on carrying on to 5k which seems to be arround 3 miles. sorry we have not followed the programm so I would not know what weeks it could be but it feels good.

For anyone interested, we found that website to help measuring the progress in distance

lexcat · 05/03/2009 15:09

Kittywise I also find have a really good run is followed but a bad one or two runs. I think it might be a mental thing you've done so well you forget how tough it was and you go out with a high expectations. Then you have a few bad days your expectations of your body are lower and it all gets easier.

I just did W6R1 it was terrible tried to start with the long hill again legs killed within a few yards got half way before saw neighbour with thier dog and had to turn round as mine and that dog don't get on. Then you chest started to tighten and had forgotten my inhaler managed the 5min with about a 2min walk to get home for the inhaler by which point was really strugging for breath. Took me 5mins to crawl home got the inhaler gave it a few mins to kick in and set off again. Managed the 8min just, but only got to 3min on the next 5min run and that was really pushing myself.

Think I might go back to W5 R1 but build it up to 4 5min runs and drop the walks to 2min over the next week or so before I start W6 again.

kittywise · 05/03/2009 15:54

Gosh lexcat, poor you, that must have been horrible. very well done on going out again though

DrTrillianAstra · 05/03/2009 15:59

Wow lexcat, I would have stayed home after that, you are woman will will of steel!

W3R1 just done. If anyone saw me the words I was mouthing were: please Robert let me stop. But I didn't. Yay!

BrownSuga · 05/03/2009 16:48

Lex, you set off again! Wow. Is there a route that you can take that is flat? Maybe that will help keep you on schedule, but not over exert yourself?

I'm running on the flat mostly and avoiding the big hill which is Mont Royal. I think I'll save that for summer 2010.

lexcat · 05/03/2009 17:21

Would run on the flat if any where near by . I've been woking on the longer hill as a little beyond it gets a little flatter. So the plan was to get uses to the hills from the start. Plus I beleive hills are great for stamina building meaning a shorter distance for the same amount of exercise on the flat.Just think if I ran on the flat I might have got to 5km by now.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm getting good at coping with the bad days plus I'm very happy to work at my own pace. I'm so impressed with myself running 20min at the start of week. This was such a big milestone for me what with been some what overweight I would prefer a smaller amount for the same effort as with longer runs as I worry about my knees.
I'm hoping running will get easier with some weigh lose which I'm working on, in the last 3 1/2 weeks I have lost 5lbs.

BrownSuga · 05/03/2009 17:39

It sounds like a good plan. And yes, your 20min run, is absolutely fab. Well done on the weight loss as well, that's really great.

Any time a friend mentions their weight, joining gym etc... I send them this program. So far I have three converts! It's so important for us to have the fitness, I feel.

lexcat · 05/03/2009 17:50

I second fitness. I though I was an ok fitness till I start the plan. I now see how unfit I was and am simple loving my new found fitness. Knowing that I've still have long way to go to be really fit makes me feel really great about the new me to be.

giddykipper · 05/03/2009 20:46

I'm meant to go out tonight but DP has gone to a pub quiz so I can't leave the house.

Have to be tomorrow night instead.

OP posts:
halster · 05/03/2009 22:21

Lexcat - You are determined - I bow down!

Kittywise - It is weird isn't it how different you can feel from one run to the next. Some ok, some terrible. I find the first part of every run particularly grim and then it seems to get better. But really love it when I am enjoying the music - so maybe get yourself a more uplifting book or radio podcast to listen to.

fakeblondie · 06/03/2009 09:09

Hi
I`m off to do wk 1 run 5 tonight ( doing each week twice ).

I lost 4 1/2 pounds at SW this week too which is a boost - esp considering i`m pre menstrual and usually gain about 4 !

Shoes great now just need a better bra for my 34 f girls !
Everyone sounds like they doing really well - cant imagine ever being able to run for longer than a min !

mileniwmffalcon · 06/03/2009 10:44

seriously lexcat that's some dedication

well my cold got better really quickly although everything's still pretty swimmy so my ears aren't quite fixed. i've done a bit of walking but i'm going to hold off on the running until tomorrow - which used to be the start of my week before i lost count lol - and then start with w5r1 again.

i don't know if it's entirely down to not running but i've been in a foul mood this week and i'm sure a run would have perked me up. everyone in my house is looking forward to me getting out again tomorrow

sorry to hear it's not all plain sailing after graduation kitty - do you think it was easier while you were following the program? i'm getting ahead of myself as usual wondering about following the 8k program after i finish, as a way to keep the progress going. although i may main goal is to be able to go out and run for half an hour (an hour in my dreams) to my own music, that's it really.

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 06/03/2009 13:05

Right, that's it! I'm moving to somewhere flat.

*goes to put head in freezer.

(will be back later to catch up on peoples posts)

Mithered · 06/03/2009 17:25

Well first week at work over and only managed one run last night but did 25 mins so was quite pleased with myself and ran 2.5 miles. Not fast but suddenly realised it was ME out running - almost a lightbulb moment.

Do you think I should do another run tonight (am pretty shattered after work) or leave it and do one Sat and one Sun otherwise my week is all out of sync?

Lex that is seriously dedicated - am impressed!

giddykipper · 06/03/2009 19:42

Can't go out tonight either as DP is out AGAIN.

This is how the slippery slope starts.

And it's my birthday tomorrow so I won't want to go out then.

Look like Sunday then.

I'm so of you all being able to go out and run 20+ minutes. If only I had stuck with it at New Year I would be getting there by now.

OP posts:
kittywise · 06/03/2009 20:07

mileniwmffalcon yes it was easier when I had the podcast to keep me going even if i didn't like the music. I would have given up many a time but knew i had to wait for the say so.

Is there an 8k podcast then?

I ran 2 miles yesterday, had to stop a couple of times for about 15 secs each time just to catch my breath, well I was running back home up hill, I just felt so bloody tired. I managed it in 20 mins though.

I think for a while I am not simply going to concentrate on running for a great distance but to up my speed. I think I will spend one run as interval training, mixing slow and fast runs but for a mile, then do a 2 mile run on another day with the up hill run, then a three mile run.
Once I feel comfortable with the three mile I will start to move on a bit.

kittywise · 06/03/2009 20:09

happy birthday for tomorrow giddy

giddykipper · 06/03/2009 21:19

Thanks kitty

BrownSuga · 06/03/2009 23:10

oooh, is there an 8k podcast then, that sounds like a good interim prior to a 10km which I fear will be a long way off.

Don't you hate it when you can't stick to an exercise regime Giddy. I need the regularity, once I'm in it, I'm fine, if I get stuffed about, that's when I end up quitting.

W6R3 Managed to get it done this aftie as DS was at daycare today. Squeezed in a haircut in the morning, and took advantage of the free afternoon. It is warm enough not to have to wear a hat, or gloves, and to rain! Only a light rain, so not too bad. I found it ok, slowed my pace a bit from the start so I could finish it, and used the Day 1 and 2 to keep track of how many minutes I had left. Not bad overall, and ready to start Week 7.

lexcat · 07/03/2009 08:31

Happy Birthday giddy

I shouldn't worry to much if you miss a run it happens. The important thing is your having a go. Which is more then a lot of people could say.

Madwelshwoman · 07/03/2009 11:35

Happy Birthday Giddy

Well I have now officially finished w2!!! Did R3 this morning and to be honest was dreading it. I have seemed to have gone through the stage this week of dreading the runs and can't wait for it to finish. This morning was no diferent but... as I got halfway through my run something just clicked and I realised I wasn't as exhausted as I usually feel and I was far more positive and thoroughly enjoyed the last part of the run!! Does this sort of thing happen to everyone?

Anyway, week 3 next week and have just signed up for my local Race for Life in June as an incentive. Also decided to give myself small weekly rewards for completing each week so am off to buy a Pilates dvd as I feel I should be doing something extra as well.

Happy running everyone

mileniwmffalcon · 07/03/2009 12:30

8&10k podcasts

happy birthday gk

wonderful w5r1 today i remember last time i took a break the first run was great then too. perhaps i should leave a week between every run . had loads of energy, didn't overheat like it did last time i did it, felt like i might just have it in me to manage 8min, although i'm still la-la-la can't hear you when it comes to r3

i saw a couple today who were just breezing along, all lithe and long limbed, looking like they were born to it - that's how i'll know i've cracked it, when i feel like that when i'm running (i think it's possible to feel long limbed even if you're naturally disadvantaged!). btw, i am prepared for the fact that it may take me a while to get there
