I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OP posts:

and me!

wintersapproaching · 06/11/2008 21:19

sorry for not posting regularly but OUCH I lunged earlier during a class and pulled my thigh muscle - does anyone know what the best treatment is? Ive had ice on it but not sure if now I need to heat it ?

Thanks for any tips,

futurity · 06/11/2008 21:19

sorry..that was in response to the 5K in more or less 30 mins thing!

wintersapproaching · 06/11/2008 21:26

Im supposed to be doing a 10k in a couple of weeks, does anyone know how much you should train up to it? I havent done enough training really (loads of reasons) but someone today mentioned you should really cut back 2 wks prior to a 10k. What have you all done in the final weeks prior to your races?

hatwoman · 06/11/2008 21:29

hello all, only just seen this. some familiar names here and some new ones. I've been running on and off for years, semi-seriously (if sporadically) for about 3 now. did my first race - 8 miles - about 3 years ago iirc, since then have done another 8, a 16 and a half-marathon. never joined a club though - just feels like extra time (to get there etc). though I can definitely see the attraction. I've finally taken the plunge and decided to do the London marathon. It terrifies me. When I did 16 I said to dh (and he keeps quoting me back at myself) that I would never again run such a ridiculous distance in my life. well not only am I going to have to run it again I'm going to have to an extra fecking 10 miles on top. what have I got myself into??

fishie · 06/11/2008 21:34

ambercat that sounds well impressive. i have been going for a year and only just managed 9k. 5k in 30 mins is my usual speed. i have had good results in increasing distance and stamina by doing an occasional short but much faster run - 20 mins / 3.5k.

winterapproaching, sorry no idea re leg or race training. bit of a rest seems sensible then some gentle training.

wintersapproaching · 06/11/2008 21:45

thanks Fishie, Just been reading some websites and they say the same - Rest and keep putting ice on it over the next couple of days. I am gutted if this puts me out of the 10k, its my first race and I've been looking forward to it for ages! Still, now I have the running bug hopefully there will be lots more races to aim for. I think having a race helps me to stay motivated.

ambercat · 06/11/2008 21:51

fishis, think i may start doing a short fast run and see how i get on. do find running faster really hard work and if i wear my hrm it just alarms all the time!

Does anyone else use a hrm?

sfxmum · 07/11/2008 09:37

hello all I did 4 miles again yesterday and hope to do the same both Saturday and Sunday
this thread seems to be motivating me to push harder, might even get back to running like before dd

as for races part of me really wants to do it but am not the sort of person for whom a finish line is an incentive, it sort of paralyses me

would be interested in question on HRM training too

Threadworrm · 07/11/2008 09:48

Re drinking and running, I did a 14 mile race along the Northumbrian coast to Alnmouth a few years ago and booked a place on the local running club's coarch to get there and back. After the race they all piled into the nearest pub (lovely pubs in Alnmouth, lovely village) and got completely wellied. Sang songs all the way home.

Btw, this was only 4 months post-birth of DS2. I was slow and my breastfeeding-breasts were annoyed with me, but I survived without any injury.

rolandbrowning · 07/11/2008 09:51

I just did the first run in the 'couch potato to 5k' programme. It's hard to believe I was doing 5k last year pre-childbirth! I enjoyed it though and it reminded me how important running is to me. I have also pre-registered for the Great Manchester Run, which is a 10k in May.

mou · 07/11/2008 14:30

Quickie...did it!!!!
1 hrs challenging cycling, 1hr 20 mins gruelling run. Found a new challenge.
Knackered but elated.
Good weekend running guys.

ambercat · 07/11/2008 14:43

Wow, well done mou!! hope you had some cake as a reward!

OrmIrian · 07/11/2008 14:45

Well done mou!

I'm going to leave it till Sunday and then try a 6 miler. If it gets too much I'll walk.

Twink · 07/11/2008 15:00

Great Mou!

I'm still battling with my hamstring so did an hour's spinning class followed by an hour's weight training. Now I hurt and I know it's going to get worse before it gets better! Still, at least I won't feel guilty about eating a hot dog at tonight's firework display.

Re drinking & running (lol Threadworrm), a friend did the Medoc marathon in France a couple of years ago, every water stop had wine too...

Seriously, if I'm going up to say half marathon distance, I just take water in a bottle like MrsWednesday described see pic here but for longer runs I organise extra water stops and take wine gums with me as they last longer than jelly babies. In the lead up to a marathon I use SiS gels as they don't need to be taken with water. It's essential to practice with any form of nutrition during training to avoid the penguin waddle occuring during a race .

Hi!
I started running 6 months ago and got to running 5k in 26 mins and at last go could run for about an hour. I have been having back problems and have been seeing an osteopath which is slowly improving things. I have just found out I'm prgt with no 3 (Hurrah!) but want to still carry on running until I basically can't. Has anyone else run whilst prgt? Do you have any tips, things to avoid?

Thanks
x

Lapsedrunner · 07/11/2008 19:04

Well done Dittany , I am also trying to get back to running after a series of injuries (age related me thinks) over several years. I ran (shuffled actually) this morning and really enjoyed the feel good factor

ambercat · 07/11/2008 19:21

trust me dittany i am as far from professional as can be!

Lapsedrunner · 07/11/2008 19:33

muppetgirl - I ran until 5 months pg, but I had been running consistently for several years. The advice I was given was keep it up if you are a seasoned runner but not if you have only just started.

muppetgirl · 07/11/2008 20:27

Thanks lapsedrunner, my ostepoath has said to keep going as I have been running 3x's a week for months now so it's good to hear from someone who has!

slackrunner · 08/11/2008 09:18

Well done mou!

Hatwoman - good on you for doing the marathon. I was due to do it a couple of years ago and ended up with a stress fracture, since then I've decided that maybe it's not for me! Keep us posted with yoru training

Right, I'm off for a 4-5 miler - arrrgh .

sfxmum · 08/11/2008 12:17

good morning bit of a wet run today
and now it seems to have stopped raining oh well it was nice

so who is doing the Marathon? as I recall a few Mnetters have done it over the years

sfxmum · 08/11/2008 12:18

abut running when pregnant info here

futurity · 08/11/2008 16:58

hope to do a marathon at some point...entered for London but got my first rejection. To be honest 2009 would not be a good year for me to do it..DS2 starts school in September so will have more time (well..ish!) after that.

Off on a 8 mile run tomorrow and considering taking water and food with me ..still not sure what food if any to take..i know jellybabies are suggested but not got any in the house! All new to me as not done carrying stuff before...well actually saying that have taken water but I hate carrying it so much..really annoys me. Got a camelbak type thing recently but don't think I need to use that quite yet?
