I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OrmIrian oh dear were you ok????

peachsmuggler, thanks for the tip, i shall try that today maybe. I am trying NOT to run everyday though. You're supposed to rest aren't you?
But it gets a bit addictive do you find? My whole body feels jittery and 'needs' to run.

I'm SO impressed with your running btw have you always been good at running?

peachsmuggler · 09/03/2009 12:28

kitty - I always have rest days in between but I guess just listen to your body. LOL at your "jittery" body

In answer to your question, I have always been crap at running. I was never fit as a child or adult and always hated it. However started running a bit before I had DD but still struggled with fitness. Did a couple of 10ks but they both took 72 mins
Started running again when DD was about 6 months old and now feel fairly fit, though most runners still whizz past me in street.

Could do with losing 7-14 pounds as sometimes feel quite heavy when running (like when they make them carry backpacks to represent the weight they have lost on Celebrity Fat Club!)

I am sooooo not a runner in terms of physique and history so I reckon if I can do it, anyone can!!!

kittywise · 09/03/2009 13:50

oh peachsmuggler, how can you say that you are not a runner? You so obviously are!!! I really admire you, you have some fantastic acheivements to boast about you know. I wouldn't care how long it took me to do 10k, I would feel really chuffed I did it. Don't be so hard on yourself, you sound like me, always putting myself down
Be proud!

sfxmum · 09/03/2009 15:17

hello all

hope everyone is well and running fit

I did not go at the weekend as usual due to family commitments and feeling a little under the weather but hopefully will be going tomorrow

about shoes, not heard of those Orm, I usually wore Acsis the 2100 series but kept having the problem of holes in the big toe area before the shoes were very worn, bought some Saucony Grid cheap on sale and they have been great, fantastic support and no holes, might get some Brooks Adrenaline next as everyone raves about them and today I got some cheap gear (running tight and T's)from Tchibo lets see how they last and perform

peachsmuggler · 09/03/2009 20:40

Cheers kitty

hatwoman · 10/03/2009 09:30

mrs w - and any other garmin owners - do you have a 405? I'm a bit frustrated with the instructions (which I think are rubbish). when you use the virtual partner you get 2 numbers on the screen - where it says "you are behind by..." then there's a number that's low-ish and a higher number - which looks likes it's in minutes and seconds. What are they? I'm not sure I quite understand the VP. also it says in the blurb that you can pace yourself against a previous run - but it doesn;t tell you how! I've trawled the garmin website and I can;t find any relevant faqs nor a help email address. any tips?

sfxmum · 10/03/2009 20:26

hello all

I have a question regarding HRM and using them, lately I have been logging my runs more accurately and seems that the HR is frequently in the upper limits am I seem to be working at 80-90% I find it all very baffling as I don't go fast and don't feel out of puff or overtired

any comments or experiences gratefully received
before I go and other my GP

hatwoman · 11/03/2009 07:53

sorry sfxmum - never used a hrm. not sure I understanf them, or how to use them at all.

I'm off to do 18 miles this morning. eek

sfxmum · 11/03/2009 09:17

thanks Hatwoman and good luck on the big run, the big day looms

not sure this Hypochondriac in chief should use one either

fishie · 12/03/2009 14:12

hat how did your 18miles go? how long does that take and do you take a drink with you?

sfxmum i've got a windproof hooded top from tchibo, is fab if a bit on the small side (i got bigger than usual).

hatwoman · 12/03/2009 14:32

it was ok thanks fishie. I take dh's camel-pac thing - a small ruck sack you fill with water, with a tube. it looks faintly ridiculous, but it's better then carrying a bottle. and I can put my phone, compass and maps in it (I run in quite a wild area, and sometimes haven't been on that particular route before, so I know it's the sensible thing to do) - so far though I've never had to use them, thanks to google earth. I feel remarkably ok today as well. it took me 3hrs 20 mins, but there was a couple of hills. I worked out a flat equivalent pace of about 10m 25s per mile (iirc) - which I'm quite pleased with.

Twink · 12/03/2009 14:33

Hat, how did it go?

SFX, I'm no expert but I've used a HRM for various periods in the past. When you talk about 80-90% is that referring to the levels your HRM has pre-set in it? Are you using a Polar with OwnZone or similiar? Or have you taken your resting pulse and worked out your personal zones?

Your heart rate can be much higher than you think but tbh if you were running at 90% for long you'd either be sick or stop so it sounds as if your actual training zone isn't what the HRM is expecting. Let me know the answers and I'll try to help!

We're in Happyland at the moment, it's been a good week; Mr T has finally finished 21 weeks of back to back cycles, has had his Hickman line out and is looking forward to feeling human (well, as much as he ever is ). I managed to run 5 miles on Tuesday, with no pain which is the best I've done since November AND we've booked the skiing

Twink · 12/03/2009 14:36

Oops, crossed with you Hat. That's really encouraging, well done.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/03/2009 14:38

Yay for MrTwink Normality - there's nothing quite like it is there Twink. Well done on the 5 miles!

hatwoman · 12/03/2009 14:41

Hi twink - glad the treatment's done with. hope you enjoy ski-ing. we're going in a few weeks - and I can;t wait.

sfxmum · 12/03/2009 14:51

hatwoman sounds like you did quite well on your run what time are you aiming for on the Day?

fishie I have used the tights and they seem fine, but the tops are a bit tight

Twink great to hear mrT is doing well

and many thanks for always being so helpful with my queries, I have a Polar RS200sd (xmas pressie from dh)
and I did set the zones according to age and so on, I don't feel tired, faint or out of puff at all, in fact was thinking of pushing further as I have been doing 3-4 miles 3 to 4 times a week averaging 10-11 minutes per mile
TIA

sfxmum · 12/03/2009 14:52

and btw I just got a bike now just have to learn how to ride it

peachsmuggler · 13/03/2009 16:21

Wonder if anyone can help with an injury question. Mr roght hip has been a bit sore for the last couple of weeks but usually eases off a few mins into a run. However last night I had to stop in middle of 5 mile run and walk for a bit. I was then able to run again and it was ok but am not sure what to do. Am doing the Reading half marathon in 2 weeks time and this weekend was supposed to be doing my second 10 mile run. Am thinking I should skip it to give my hip a break. Does this sound like the right thing to do, or are you just supposed to keep on running?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/03/2009 18:03

Personally I think if it's painful when you're actually running then you should skip it. I have continued to run in the past when something is painful afterward and then settles but not if running is actually hurting IYSWIM. Can you do something else? Cycling? Are you due a change of shoes?

peachsmuggler · 13/03/2009 18:17

No shoes are fine. Was going to do some swimming next week. I think if I leave running till Monday it will hopefully be better. This was the first time it had hurt when actually running so hopefully will not get worse...

MrsWednesday · 13/03/2009 21:26

Oh that's great news Twink, have been thinking of you and your DH and wondering how things were. So pleased you have some normality and a fab holiday to look forward to. Great news about the running too.

V impressed with the 18 miles hat, that is fantastic

Weird Peachsmuggler, have had the same sore right hip and went to see a physio on Thursday. She said I've damaged my hip flexor muscle and that I should rest. Grrrrrrrrr. Do you stretch this area at all Peach? Lunges are good apparently.

She also told me I have very flat feet, a hypermobile knee and have also damaged my calf - full of good news in other words. Apparently the way my legs are aligned is all wrong and that the further and faster I run the more likely I am to do some serious damage.

Does anyone else see a physio? I'm thinking I should go because I'll be really annoyed if I have to stop completely. Would welcome your advice - is it worth seeing a chiropractor or similar as well?

fishie · 16/03/2009 20:24

peach i had dreadful hip pain, it was unsuitable shoes (too hard). vanished entirely within a fortnight once i got better ones.

i now have a painful front thigh (quadricep?) and wonder whether it is new shoe time or something else. shoes are about 5m old and have done about 400k. hmm now i do that sum maybe it is time for a visit to the shop.

peachsmuggler · 16/03/2009 21:17

mrswed - thanks, I stretch this are least. Maybe I should do more.

fishie - How often should I be changing my shoes then? I have had them for 3 years, but had a gap of about 18 months in the middle when I didn't run at all.

If I went back to the shop I bought them in would they be able to check them out and tell me if they needed changing?

peachsmuggler · 16/03/2009 21:25

Am guessing also though, that I shouldn't be changing them just before a race...

kittywise · 17/03/2009 17:56

peachsmuggler and mrsW I came across these exercises, I'm going to give them a go as the longer I run for the more pain I am getting in my shins and knees.
