I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

oldwomanetc - there's actually really not mcuh mystic to running (which is part of the joy of it) but some rules are important - proper running shoes being the main one; and taking it easy being the other one - you need to build up slowly and steadily. take a look at runnersworld (google it) and there'll be advice and training schedules for complete non-runners. It's a fantastic form of exercise - I would really encourage you to give it a try.

if you live in the country I would add to those rules - avoid the busy main roads without pavements and get yourself bright clothing - white or flourescent. if you must run at night (not recommended in the country imo - because of lack of street lighting, bendy roads, lack of pavements) then carry a bike light. tbh it's best to find decent off-road footpaths - but it can be difficult - esp in winter when they're muddy. (I live in the country too). You might also consider it pretty important to take a phone with you but I'd be a hypocrite if I said it was essential as I always forget mine...)

Hello all! Can I join...need some support!
After nearly 3 years since I was last a 'runner' I am about to embark on starting again....have been walking alot but find I really want to go faster so now must be the time!
Any advice would be brilliant!

Themasterandmargaritas · 02/02/2009 18:36

Right, I'm back again, I have been keeping up with the thread on and off.

I am currently doing 10k twice a week and 7k once a week. I need to build up for a tough half marathon in the heat, high altitude on a very hilly and rough terrained course. I want to follow a schedule, I have tried Runnersworld but I have to be a subscriber to get a schedule, where else can I look?

hatwoman · 03/02/2009 10:52

some rw schedules are free. I found my marathon schedule by just googling - quite a few running clubs have them on line. Petts Wood Runners was the one that suited me best

sfxmum · 04/02/2009 16:51

hi all has anyone been out and about in this weather? here after assorted illnesses and the snow we had ice and it is virtually impossible to avoid ice and mud, am feeling the need to go out but it is looking like Saturday will be the best option

hope everyone is well

MrsWednesday · 04/02/2009 17:03

Hiya sfxmum, happy birthday for yesterday! Did you have a lovely day?

I managed to get out on Sunday for a long run before the snow started but haven't been out since - decided to give running club a miss yesterday because I didn't want to risk slipping over as it's still really icy here.

I found this half marathon schedule here, not sure if it's any good for you?

half marathon schedule

My half marathon is a week on Sunday...eek! Hope the snow clears by the weekend as I really need to get out and do one last big run before the 'race' (no racing for me, just getting to the end is my aim )

futurity · 04/02/2009 17:11

not done any running myself...following a schedule for a 10K and was due to do 5 miles today...not a chance! There is no way I am going to injure myself over it! Did 2 miles on treadmill on Monday but can't do 5 miles on it as sooooo boring!

hatwoman · 04/02/2009 17:49

Hi everyone. I managed to get my long run - 13 miles - done on Sunday - but Monday and Tuesday were lost to the snow and ice. I went out today - it was ok but not great - better than the ice we had here a few weeks ago - and better than the mud we seem to have all the time at this time of year. I'm so looking forward to drier weather. although I do rather like the snow - it does look rather lovely

sfxmum · 04/02/2009 19:54

mrsW thanks, I had a small family party on Sunday but the day itself although nice there was not much celebration involved as dh was down with a D&V bug and nursery was closed due to snow so not much time for myself and not much in way of treats, did not even crack open the champers lest I be called a lush for glugging it all myself

glad some of you managed to run will look around my usual path tomorrow but not hopeful

mileniwmffalcon · 06/02/2009 22:23

finally read the whole thread, and gained much inspiration along the way, not least from twink & mr twink, much respect. happy birthday to all the recent birthdays, am counting myself very lucky to have discovered running at the sprightly age of 34!

lol, well, when i say "running" i should a bit in this company shouldn't i? tomorrow sees me begin week 2 of the c25k so running for a grand total of 9 out of 20 minutes but i think the programme is really clever because it never quite lets you know how rubbish you are at the beginning, teasing you along all the while getting you fractionally fitter and fractionally closer to doing actual running (well, i hope so).

it's been quiet round here with all the snow - have you all retreated to treadmills or is it outdoors or nothing?

MrsWednesday · 07/02/2009 08:46

I've been wondering the same thing mili (welcome by the way), I really need to go out for a run this weekend because my half marathon is next week but it's still so icy here. What are you all doing? Anyone risked it and survived intact?

fishie · 07/02/2009 15:50

hello runners and happy birthday sfxmum.

i am chicken re ice too and have been walking instead. have been out today (london), not too bad as the mud is mainly frozen and most ice has gone. cor it was hard work though, just a few days off makes such a difference!

sfxmum · 07/02/2009 17:35

hello all

hi mileni welcome

thanks fishie

not been yet, today looked promising but a combo of late night and family day out today stopped me, but am definitely going tomorrow morning maybe a combo of road and trail, hopefully will be back on track this coming week

Themasterandmargaritas · 07/02/2009 19:47

Thanks hatwoman and MrsW for the schedules, the Petts Wood one I think, suits me. The problem I have is that there is no flat here, just up and down so doing fartlek is a joke, as I can only just make it up the hills as it is

I can't imagine running in snow and ice. Be careful.

sfxmum · 08/02/2009 11:20

finally went out this morning lots of people about which was nice, no snow in London and not that cold, my next opportunity will be Tuesday and the forecast is for heavy snow I hope they are wrong or it comes only in the afternoon

MrsWednesday · 08/02/2009 15:59

I went out too, still lots of snow and ice around up here so I ran mainly on the road then jumped sidewards into black slushy ice every time a car came. It was not my most enjoyable run ever - the traffic fumes were disgusting! - but I do feel better for going.

Does anyone do any stomach and arm exercises? Was told that have strong arm and stomach muscles helps running but not really sure what to do?

sfxmum · 08/02/2009 16:04

mrsW I went back to doing Pilates and do weights for arms, some exercises within Pilates
and squats (for my knees) with weights in hands
I try to do it most days
glad you managed to go out especially as race is near

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/02/2009 16:12

I do yoga twice a week and I find that helps with upper body strength and stretching out my hamstrings.

Gosh well done you two on getting out, will you get more snow this week do you think?

sfxmum · 08/02/2009 16:22

abs&core here and there are other links there to upper body workouts I do simple basic ones with light weights 2lbs

MrsWednesday · 08/02/2009 17:55

It's snowing here now!

Brilliant, thanks for those sfxmum, will give them a go.

OrmIrian · 09/02/2009 09:59

Please tell me I am not the only one who hasn't been out this week? All our pavements are deadly and the footpaths inches deep in snow. Melting now so will go out tonight.

DH gave me this brilliant breathable running top for my bday and haven't had a chance to wear it yet.

OrmIrian · 09/02/2009 10:01

I took a day off for my bday too Was planning a long run followed by a long soak and breakfast. Didn't happen not least because my DC were off school

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/02/2009 16:27

Happy Birthday Orm! What a shame on your plans. Will you get out tonight do you think?

I did 10k today but my last hill beat me and I had to walk for 3 minutes. Surely they should just be getting easier and easier?!

hatwoman · 09/02/2009 18:10

hi everyone - can I be forgiven for cutting and pasting my marathon-thread post here?

I did 16 miles today and it was awful. just utterly awful. everything hurt, still does. I was cursing out loud and talking to myself about how ridiculous this whole project is. I feel ok now - but out there I was just thinking there's no way I can do a marathon. I also want everyone to do one so they have an inkling of what it's like. running 16 miles is not like running 4 miles 4 times and I want everyone to know that!

I was pleased to get at least a bit of recognition - there are some workmen at the end of our road and they saw me go out...and come back again. I was running back past them and thinking "Oh come on you miserable sods I've been running for nearly 3 hours, you could at least say something" and then one said "You've had a good one haven;t you" with quite some awe in his voice. so i was able to say "Yeah 16 miles" and they all looked suitably impressed

and way too many roads - fear of ice kept me on roads and I too was doing that jumping out the way of cars thing . I have to say though, that we had fresh snow last night and running in snow - on footpaths, is actually ok.
