I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

OP posts:

that is impressive despite the pain, if you haven't yet, you should really read the Murakami book on running it is quite good talking about the challenges the bad runs/ training the pain and so on

fishie · 10/02/2009 09:13

hatwoman i am awed. could never do a marathon, just the sheer length of time spent running would do me in, let alone the physical aspect of it. is it the first time you've run so far? i bet it will be easier next time.

peachsmuggler · 10/02/2009 10:30

Hi, this is the first time I have posted here. I put the following post as a new thread yesterday but nobody answered so wondered if you ladies could help?

I am training for a half marathon and at the moment am running in a long sleeved top (not a running top) and a running jacket.

The race is at the end of March in Reading. Anyone any idea, given avergae temps for that time of year, what I'll want to be wearing. A long sleeved top? A short sleeved top? And can you recommend any good ones.

Thanks

oh and I realise from the above it sounds like I am running naked from the waist down. I am not

MrsWednesday · 10/02/2009 18:29

Hiya peachsmuggler. Would you be able to wear your normal long sleeve top, take your running jacket and tie it round your waist if you get too hot?

Hatwoman, I'm in awe of you running 16 miles - I'm not surprised it bloody hurt! Are you able to take a bit of time out of your schedule to recover? Are you taking anything to eat when you're out, any sweets etc? If I'm doing a long run (not as long as yours though!) I sometimes take some mini chocolates with me, perks me up half way round and gives me something to do!

Running club tonight for me, have eaten my own body weight in pasta for tea and now want to slump on the sofa instead of pounding the streets in the cold and dark.

Belated happy birthday Orm.

fishie · 10/02/2009 21:06

oh orm, HAPPY BIRTHDAY how did i miss that?

hello peachsmuggler, i wear one layer + bra all year round, but don't run in proper rain. have tchibo windproof top with hood but alas they have gone from uk. it was only £12.50 long sleeved nike thing from ebay for middling weather. cotton tshirts for heat but may try to find something better this summer.

sfxmum · 10/02/2009 21:14

belated happy birthday Orm sorry missed that

about running clothes I wear a short sleeve old thing from Uniqlo bra of course, have a base layer thin thing and a long sleeve top,if it is very cold wear both of these also a cheapish nike semi waterproof thing

peachsmuggler · 10/02/2009 21:30

Jacket round the waist is a pain I find. guess I will buy a long and a short sleeved top and see how I go over the next few weeks.

Am up to 7 miles and just wondering, is interval training the only way to improve my speed?

BlessThisMess · 11/02/2009 14:49

Dropping in again - haven't run properly for about 2.5 weeks ! And I have my first 10k in 10 days' time - yikes! The paths and roads are still so snowy, icy and slushy here that I really don't fancy going out and getting freezing cold wet feet. Urgh.

Twink · 11/02/2009 19:52

Not been able to be a proper part of this thread for ages - but last night I managed 30 mins for the first time since Dec so . Physio said it was fine to try running again if I was careful. Mr T is still pounding his treadmill too, hopefully will start his last chemo cycle next week

Peachsmuggler I've done Reading a few times and always wear a bin liner at the start and on v cold days have got a long sleeved top from a charity shop which I ditch early on (before I get flamed, they are collected & recycled!) Reading used to have a reputation for starting late (like an hour!) but in recent years it's been on time so you don't get quite as cold although you do have to drop your bag off quite a while before the start.

peachsmuggler · 12/02/2009 14:00

Thanks for the info Twink DP will be there, though not running, so I guess I won't need to hand my bag in and can wear fleece or something until the point I need to go and line up.

This is my first half-marathon, is it an ok course. I heard that there weren't too many hills which appealed to me!

MrsWednesday · 15/02/2009 15:15

Good luck for your DH's last chemo Twink. How is he doing at the moment? Congrats on being able to run again , must be v frustrating for you.

Just back from my half marathon, am about to go and soak in the bath for a bit before shovelling huge amounts of food down my neck!

I got round in 1 hour and 52 minutes, so am v pleased to have got under my target of 2 hours

Themasterandmargaritas · 15/02/2009 16:51

Wow well done MrsW How are you feeling, physically?

Twink, good luck for Mr T's chemo this week.

sfxmum · 15/02/2009 18:32

well done mrsW

and indeed best of luck to mrTwink

was anyone else racing this weekend?

I managed to plod along both day this weekend which was nice

Twink · 16/02/2009 15:21

Fab MrsW, beating your target time by 8 MINUTES is fantastic, well done!

Thanks for the good wishes, I'm typing with everything crossed that tomorrow goes ahead and we can finally start to make the most of Mr T's time - every open window on my PC, apart from Mumsnet, seems to be a skiing holiday company..

Very paltry compared with others at the moment but I did my first outdoor run since Dec today, managed 5k with no obvious ill-effects which has cheered me up no end!

hatwoman · 16/02/2009 17:21

Hi everyone - excellent time Mrs W. When I did a half I really wanted to get round in 2 but didn;t quite manage it.

I've been a happy bunny this weekend - finally took the plunge and bought myself a garmin. I love it. It's had the desired effect of really helping me with pace. I've been finding that after 10 miles I just can't be bothered and just want to finish...but this thing has a virtual partner - you tell it what speed to go at (eg 10 minute miles) and then all the time you can see if you're ahead or behind. It's not perfect because the VP doesn't care about hills - and keeps a uniform pace the whole distance - but in a sense that makes it more interesting - you fall behind as soon as you go up and then you can see yourself catch up on the downhills. I visualise the VP as a terminator-style robot, unstoppable and undetered by things like hills.

mileniwmffalcon · 16/02/2009 17:52

hello proper runners i'm just nipping over from the c25k thread to ask about knee pain. i'm still only on week 3 but i've started to get a niggling ache when i start running (it fades through the session, not sure if that's down to being warmer, or cunning endorphins fooling me and masking it).

it first came on after i'd done a lot of walking the day before, but has persisted during the last 3 sessions. it doesn't really bother me between runs (i notice i'm a bit stiff when i get up after being still for a long time, but that's it really).

can anyone advise whether this sounds like something i should stop running for, that will sort itself out in time, whether i need to see a physio? fyi i got shoes fitted with video/treadmill in running shop, am running on pavements (someone on the c25k thread said that grass may not be any better because it's uneven, is that right?) am working to c25k plan (so this week run 1.5 mins, walk 1.5 mins, run 3 mins, walk 3 mins x2), on off days i walk/swim/yoga, with complete day off once a week.

would really appreciate any advice, i feel i'm really starting to get the running bug, would be so sad if i had to stop (but sadder if i carried on when i shouldn't and made it worse).

Themasterandmargaritas · 16/02/2009 18:27

mileni I'm no expert but when I first started last year it was the same for me. If you have good shoes and no previous history of knee pain/issues, I would work through it and you should find that as you get stronger, the pain goes away. Try and wear a knee support and see if that helps. Also do mention at yoga that it hurts as yoga can stress the knee joint a lot.

mileniwmffalcon · 16/02/2009 20:40

cheers m&m is reassuring to hear you ran through yours. did you do any particular strengthening exercises, or just the running? i yoga on my own at the moment (been doing it for years), i wasn't aware of yoga in general being bad for your knees. but i know there are some postures that you do have to approach in a particular way to protect the knees so i'll make sure i do those scrupulously.

MrsWednesday · 16/02/2009 22:41

Thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot

I'm now toying with the idea of doing a marathon, perhaps the Windermere one in May but not sure whether I've left it too late to do the training. Hatwoman, how is your training going now? Have you done another long run since your last horrible one? Any words to put me off of encouragement?

Have to say, I love my garmin, it really helps to keep me going when I'm struggling as it gives me targets to aim for.

Glad you got outside for a run today Twink. Also have fingers crossed for the amazing Mr T for tomorrow.x

Mileni, I also have ongoing aches in my knee but it doesn't seriously bother me and hasn't got any worse so I just carry on (perhaps this is against medical advice!)

MrsWednesday · 16/02/2009 22:42

Forgot to add that I could hardly walk yesterday and I haven't been a great deal better today!

OrmIrian · 17/02/2009 10:01

I ran 20 miles!

Ok it was over 3 days but I can still say with pride (and accuracy) that I ran 20 miles between Friday evening and Monday evening. Hurrah!

I don't think you can run marathons over 4 days can you???

hatwoman · 17/02/2009 11:23

hi all.

mrs W - I did 14 at the weekend with my garmin and it was much better then the 16 last week. I kept up a 10 minute mile and just felt lots more bouncy and happy. the fact that the snow and ice has gone helped too I think. I was slightly jumping ahead of my schedule with the 16 - I think I'm going to keep on track now, rather than trying to push it. The schedule is 4 runs a week with an optional 5th and I was trying to get to the same total mileage doing 4 by adding to the long run.

a marathon in Windermere sounds fantastic. I'm no expert but if you've just done a half I would have thought a marathon in May was feasible. I'm doing the beginners-intermediate schedule here it would seem like you can probably work it round what you've done so far.

orm - there was that person who did the London marathon in an old-fashioned diving suit. I think he took about 4 days

Twink - best wishes to Mr T. Hope the weeks goes ok.

hope everyone is is doing ok.

fishie · 17/02/2009 22:24

hey all. well done mrsw, hat and orm.

i seem to be getting worse every week not better. half asleep and hip / thigh v sore today, possibly from gardening on sunday though.

have got new socks. last pair caused terrible bruising on end of little toe, seam in wrong place.

sfxmum · 19/02/2009 15:12

hello all
am quite pleased with myself as I managed to go out sat/sun/tue/thu and did a little over 3 miles each day, not great but hey
hopefully will do something longer at the weekend
hope everyone is well

Themasterandmargaritas · 20/02/2009 08:48

Morning, thanks to you lot I managed to do 8 miles this morning, the furthest I have ever done It took me 75 minutes so I am very pleased. It was blardy hot though.

Now should I stick at this mileage for a couple of weeks for my long run or should I add a km each week?

Mileni - my knee is a bit sore after going further than it is used to!

MrsW - go for it.

I hope the Twink family's week has gone well.
